We paid £7.5 million for him when we had Chiedozie Ogbene in the building. Not an inconsiderable fee.

In the last two games McKenna has put Jaden on the right when bringing on Jack Clarke and left McAteer on the bench.

McKenna has always preferred to freshen up his front four in the final 20-25 minutes so it seems quite odd that he is preferring to play Jaden out of position when his race has been run in preference to bringing in a frsh McAteer.

Has KM lost faith in McAteer already? I hope to be proved wrong tomorrow night.

Along with Furlong!?

I think he's been one of the better of the new signings!

Furlong's first game was very good. He's been so so since and on Friday he was awful. Constantly pulled out of position he gave the Boro wingers a free run down his side.

Factoring in the inflated fee, it's perhaps the most baffling signing I can remember us making.

Yeah I'm of the same thinking.

I'm not sure how long you give these players these days before being allowed to say it out loud, but I've seen nothing as yet to think these is a player there that's effect and efficient for us.

He had a good first game vs Blades but I genuinely think they were just that bad.

Looks absolutely bang average and was especially poor on Friday night. Positionally all over the place.

I'd love to know Furlongs heat maps from his opening games to Fridays, he seemed so far advanced it was getting a bit stupid.

I was struggling to believe what I was seeing at times. They played one ball forward and our defence had evaporated.

Texters posted on twitter the other day that if you watched our waves of attacks then blinked for a second you would suddenly see Boro in our half outnumbering us three to one.

He's played 236 minutes for us- 171 if you don't count Blackburn.

Blackburn counts of course, because for 80mins he didnt know that game would be called off.

So in those 236mins i dont think i've seen anything of note.

Yeah our off the ball stuff was a bit Crazy, I said this around the 30th minute mark, we kinda went with 2 cbs on halfway and furlong was high and wide next to egeli, incredibly risky.

Ogbene has played more than twice that, minutes wise.

I have no idea how well he’s been playing, but the story that he’s been sent away to “get fit” just doesn’t add up. It didn’t makes sense in August, it makes even less sense now.

£20m on two right sided attacking players: one loaned out, the other currently down the pecking order.

Blimey.

Made sense to me. His injury was serious, that kind of achilles injury is going to affect him significantly, notably his pace. He was very unlikely to be the same player following that, sadly.

Not true, serious injury but every chance he will be the same player.

That's not, really, his skill set.

Though I'd argue it's the position we are struggling with the most at the moment.

McAteer clearly needs to up his game as he's looked poor. See also: Akpom.

Akpom has been very disappointing so far.

On the KOA pod they said Akpom had a grand total of three touches in 27 minutes on Friday night, which if true is incredibly poor.

I watched him for a bit and ignored the ball when the telebox allowed and i must say he looked really confused about the sport he was playing

Remember that Douglas clip v newcastle i think it was, it was like that, just jogging around in different directions not really doing anything.

At the moment, a very very odd player

Philogene played 90 minutes a lot when he was at Hull so I think his natural fitness is pretty good, prone to the odd knock though. Philogene can produce something out of nothing so I can see the logic in leaving him on when we need a goal. If we'd been 2-0 up on Friday, I expect we'd have seen McAteer on instead. I think he'll start tomorrow too.

He is most definitely our standout player this season but seen all of Jaden’s games on the road I would say he has been completely ineffective in away games.

I think macAteer was being held back for the Charlton game. Very much needs to show why we spent 12 million imo

Agree that he has looked a different player away versus at Portman Road. I can see the logic in keeping him on though given his ability to produce something from nothing, that's not really in McAteer's wheelhouse.

The right hand side hasn't really produced yet. Maybe there's a tendency to see what we want to see with Walle-Egeli, probably because of his age and that's perfectly reasonable. He's young and needs time to acclimatise to a different country and league. I'm sure he'll keep improving but politely he hasn't contributed a great deal yet. Neither has McAteer in his few appearances, although its early days for him too.

I'm expecting some changes tonight. McAteer to start on the right and Akpom centrally.

Our whole right side has been pretty useless for about 4 weeks. Not sure Furlong is helped by not having anyone good enough in-front of him

Its absolutely understandable why we are speaking about McAteer and Akpom. Similarly neither have hit the ground running for unknown reasons. Likely Akpom and his summmer didnt set him up for the season, McAteer unknown.

I dont believe however that McAteer is not going to deliver perhaps another player with an unfashionable international pedigree but he had and still has many or all the attributes we wanted and need in a Wes Mk2. I certainly hope this is an adaptation phase only, he was too much money to not improve rapidly. Akpom is different, a seasoned player being asked to do a technical role, this could be adaptation too but he looks less at home in the 10 space in the way we play, he needs to find a way to impact games fast.

Think it was £11m.

Paid £9m for Ogbene, sent him out on loan, spent another £11m to bring in a new option who looks less effective than Ogbene.

Player trading.

Less effective than Ogbene?

He's literally done nothing. Not all his fault I know but he did very little before his injury last season.

Don't think we'll see him in a Town shirt again and Wes's time may soon be up as well. I think that's why Mcateer was signed
