Imagine being a player who's just won the league and you've seen your club spend 100 odd mill on a player who refuses to play football because he wasn't get his own way.

Good read, that. Losing Jota has to be a factor in their decline. Friend, teammate, very good player. Taken in the most horrific way.

Defensive blunders every game, a lazy midfield (watch PSV’s second goal for a good example) and half a billion pounds worth of strikers who couldn’t score with a whore.

Written by my sister's partner Karl, a true scouser and Liverpool fanatic. They live in Norwich so football disappointment will be familiar to him. [Post edited 26 Nov 2025 22:55]

I thought this last year and said it to a few people, I didn’t think they were anything special, they obviously deserved to win the league but it was far from a vintage top 4. City were woeful for them, Chelsea were rebuilding, Arsenal ok, it was a good league to win last year.

I don't see how it wouldn't affect the players. I'm a season ticket holder for the Nottingham Panthers ice hockey team and a couple of years ago they had the tragedy of Adam Johnson's death. The team took a few weeks off, but came back to finish the season (I believe not playing was seriously considered) and it was rough on everyone, but especially the players and staff. Now players don't just become poor, but sport is about more than just ability, it's mentality, resilience, focus. A game that sticks in my head, Panthers were approaching the halfway point, were completely on top and 3-0 up. Then they missed a penalty shot and gave up a cheap goal about 30 seconds later. Everyone on and off the ice just knew what was going to happen and they just fell apart and lost 3-5. The thing they just did not have in the tank was resilience. They needed that just to step out on the ice. Eventually they slipped to their worst finish in 30+ years. It's not quite the same, Adam Johnson died on the ice in front of his teammates so there's extra layers to their trauma, but it highlights that those guys are human. They can still get out there and do a job. However in a normal job, being at 80-90% on some days is fine, but in sport it's the difference between winning and losing.

Refreshing a successful team has to be done or else the team grows old together. However, it has to be done carefully & yes, it doesn't seem to be working at Liverpool. Shows how fine the margins are in professional football - no one is suggesting that Liverpool don't have good players, although for my money Salah is not quite the player that he was.

| Liverpool v PSV on 11:14 - Nov 27 with 919 views | strikalite | It just goes to show that you can buy the very best players and spend huge money but it still doesn't guarantee it'll work, Chelsea have done this many times over the years, sometimes it just doesn't click into place, we're an example of that overall right now, on less a level of course but it's still the case.. | | | |

| Liverpool v PSV on 15:03 - Nov 27 with 681 views | Vaughan8 | Using the Jota incident as an excuse seems to me to be very lazy. Once you're playing surely (like a lot of things) it goes out of your head? When they kept getting last minute winners at the start no-one was blaming it. They've given 2 big players a new big contract. Even if subconsciously, some players seem to "down tools" when they know they've got another 2-3 years (a good example was Ozil at Arsenal). A fair few new players (who again didn't really know Jota). Team spirit seems to have gone maybe due to some points above. | | | |
