Not a chance of top 2 16:22 - Dec 13 with 2864 viewsIP1Blue

We’re not consistent enough.

Our general play has been so far below par all season.

Jack Taylor was our 4th choice and 5th choice in midfield in last 2 seasons and now is starting games, fair enough he was good in a couple but the last couple of games shows why he was 4th and 5th choice.

Hirst and Azon are not good enough and that’s now a fact after 20 games.

Away from home we look a different team.

And if we go behind, it almost feels as if we’ve got no chance of winning a game. A complete opposite to our previous promotion team. If the going gets tough. We crumble which is a massive concern.

Play offs is the maximum we can get.

I reckon we need 90pts for automatic promotion. That means taking 56 from the remaining 25 games or 2.24 points/game. That seems unlikely given that we are currently averaging 1.6 points/game. Town seems as inconsistent as ever.

That means winning 17 and drawing 5, losing 3.

Not a hope that happens please get real everybody.

Agreed. We are not going to get top unless Coventry or Boro fall away. I'll be interested what changes happen in January, but don't expect too many, bar another striker, as we've spent a huge amount in the summer.

Can you see a surging winning run with this kind of away form? Nine points before new years and we can talk but that would be two tough away wins. Striker required asap in January.

I believe a defensive midfielder is more important than a striker but would be good to get both.

From an alternative perspective, top two is still possible and promotion from the play-offs a very real possibility.

Currently, a solitary point separates the four play off positions and teams with less than 10 points from the play-offs have a very good shot at being there with over half the season to play.

People are far too ready to extrapolate current form through to the remainder of the season but that isn't a realistic way of predicting final league positions, as it changes on a weekly basis.

The only certainty at this stage of the season is that lack of belief is the best indicator of failure.

Onus is on Ashton, who talks a good one when all is well but vanishes at times like this.

Our recruitment has been piss poor for the past few transfer windows with the same few positions found wanting and yet nothing has been done or we get our pants pulled by other clubs buying / loaning overpriced dross from them.

Leicester signed 0 players in the summer and yet they made us with our new multi-million £ signings look shite.

Ashton seems more interested in being promoting PR as some mega event destination and rubbing shoulders with celebrities than focusing on his main job - football. Priorities all wrong.

The top 2 is still achievable. Do we look ready to get in the top 2? Not yet.
The problem isn’t just recruitment it’s tactics. We do the same thing over and over. McKenna has been worked out by other coaches and because he doesn’t change the job of our players is tougher as the element of surprise is less. Although, the Philogene goal against Stoke was a green shoot of change as we attacked differently.

We need to learn more from our mistakes. We are too easy to score against for a top 2 team.

The one post on this thread that dares to criticise McKenna. You'll get plenty of down votes because the happy clappers on here cant see it. McKenna is being found out this season big time despite having a squad most championship teams could only dream of.

The longer this season goes on the more I agree with this even though I'm hoping KM sorts it out, there is little evidence to suggest though that this will change.

Currently 9 wins, 7 draws and 5 defeats from 21.

It is the equivalent of turning the disappointing draws into wins, turning performances like Preston into a win and not losing 2-3 of those we have been losing. That isn't an impossible task but it would take a massive improvement in consistency. Getting 2 really impactful signings over the line in January could make that difference.

I refuse to rule out automatics at this point but realistically we have to say play offs are the likely outcome. That then becomes quite a lottery as we well know.

That’s asking for a pretty huge turnaround in what’s been dished up so far.

Play offs are a lottery but they might require x3 things we’re utterly incapable of delivering as things stand.

Three decent performances in a row

The strength to respond to conceding the first goal in a game

Five or six players you’d trust to cope with the pressure of a penalty shoot out

Which one bit the dust…..dee or dum?….(What’s App group, Nov ‘25)

The KM rule of the ball must be with the keeper after 3 passes does not help.

Football has changed, we need to be more direct and more counter attacking, teams know how to play the KM/Pep way whatever you want to call it.

I know we beat Stoke but the difference in the way they took a free kick to us was night and day. We spent fortunes on attacking talent only to pass around at the back and gift chances.

I think a lot of people forget that KM is a fairly newish manager and is still learning his trade, maybe he isn’t as confident as we all think he is.

Playoffs at best for me,but the table is so close when you look at it anything can happen.

Yes our recruitment has not all been successful over several windows. Yes we had a slow start. Yes we are inconsistent right now. Yes we need targeted additions to improve and balance the squad. Yes we need to sort out too many right backs, two few left backs, balance and back up in midfield, past poor recruitment in forward areas. Yes KMcK needs to get more from the current forward group and they need to really show why they were recruited for this opportunity to get back to the PL.

This is what running and supporting a football club is like.

Now so what, top 2 or play offs, promotion is promotion. Its about time the fan boys did their bit to help make PR more inviting for the home team again rather than complain about everything not working as they expect.

2025 has been a season of results to forget at PR, 2026 can be very different, let’s all choose to make the difference.

He’s probably the highest paid manager in the entire EFL, and the onus is for him to deliver, ITFC isn’t some experimental ground for him to hone his skills before leaving for Spurs, Man U or another PL club

I agree. And we have been an inconsistent disappointment. Clearly. But it's funny to note that many describe us as bang average etc, which kind of fits, but by definition we are 7 or 8 places better than average for this league. Which kind of tells you that despite our own standards not having been met at all, even as we stand we are toward the better end and the higher standard of this league. Which has got to give us hope of improvements making a big difference in our league position and prospects.

It’s an open league this year, so there’s a chance.

It’s not a “fact” that Hirst and Azon aren’t good enough — Hirst has proven himself at this level. He’s going through some patchy form and possibly a lack of confidence at the moment, but he’s still showing some good play, and he is scoring.

But yeah, the team resilience isn’t there. It has got better — for a bit we looked like we needed a 2 goal lead to see out a game — but there’s no way I felt we’d get back at 2-0 down. Instead, we play Lambertball until the last 15 or 20 minutes, have a little flurry and then it ends.

Also agree about Taylor. Obviously KM doesn’t trust Cajuste to start, which maybe reflects *his* lack of confidence.

Not sure how to solve the resilience/confidence problem. Might take some crazy comeback from 3-0 down or something.

I've given up on top two, we are also competing with about 10 teams for 4 play off spots

Yeah im defo in the group of thinking top 2 is gone. That non winning away run and the awkward results against oxford, charlton etc imo have taken that away.

All about really pushing this side on after christmas and making sure we finish the business end of the season strong going into the play offs.

Would agree top 2 looks beyond us, we aren't consistently good enough to be denting top 2, ultimately with our performances this year we don't really deserve to be anywhere near the top 2.

In itself, being 21 games in a the top 2 looking beyond us, is really really poor.

Top 6 looks the most achievable, and it is, because we drop sporadic good performances, we have picked up points when we haven't been at our best, and ultimately the standard this year is poor, which is to our benefit.

It's achievable, but it's not a given, as with we are probably competing with 8-10 teams for a play off spot.

"Not a chance"

I disagree. Still over half the season to go. Lot's of small things not quite working for us that can still come good. A transfer window to come. Cov and Mids may yet implode.

Yes Town have made it hard for themselves. But I still have hope.

I'd say we are where we deserve to be. Better than most but nowhere near the top 2. Not buying this idea that one or two changes will suddenly unlock a promotion winning team, that's wishful thinking.
