It’s a bit flat in there isn’t it? 01:43 - Dec 21 with 1275 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

On the one hand, that first half didn’t give a lot for the fans to get behind, on the other, it actually can’t be a particularly nice crowd to play in front of at times. The loudest you can hear is groaning sometimes. Not like we are a high tempo team too often this season but it really was quiet, especially until we got the second.

Glad we got it done in the end even if making hard work of it. Results went nicely as well. Kind of felt like a game we just needed to turn up and we’d win, arrogant to say but the talent levels were almost as stark as what we were up against last year.

Was really hoping McAteer would score in his cameo, hard not to feel for him a bit.

The 11am from LST had of us Yankees on it ;) Nice to see some of the investors over with their families as well.

Striker and central midfielder still needed in January.

People are much more vocal when there is defeat on the cards. Human nature. In particular, the English love a good moan, wherever possible so it isn't surprising that it has gone quiet on here.

I didn't watch the match today, but understand from others that the first half was pretty dire, even though we went in at half time 1 to the good.

I'm glad we got the win, though. The best teams pick up points even when not playing well, that's why we are currently 3rd.

Anyone expecting anything resembling the 23/24 season need to face reality. Some seasons are just unique. That and the season before it were sublime but unique.

This is not EA FC or Football Manager.

Yes, the first half was pretty dire. Sort of bitty. Wednesday lads looked like they covered every blade of grass. Credit to them. By contrast, despite better players, bar Bannon, we seemed to be strolling it with little space, tempo or cutting edge. Wasteful in possession too.

Then we had a terrific move with some slick passing and opened them up. Philogene nearly scored with an overhead kick and Kipre did. The mood in the stadium changed as we got on top.

Second half we played a lot better and I think most in the crowd enjoyed it, bar the ten mins where frustratingly we let them back in. The result wasn’t really in doubt. The crowd was about 28600. Not bad for a pre Xmas fixture and credit to the away supporters who travelled in numbers.

You are right. It’s not FM25. It’s sport with all the jeopardy and illogicality that goes with it. That’s what makes it interesting. No, we don’t have the best team I’ve ever seen and can be frustrating to watch at times. But I enjoyed yesterday. It was interesting and compared to the dross served up for so many years just a short time ago, I’ll take it every time.

No, we are not the team of two years ago. Though it’s easy to forget we struggled at times then too. It wasn’t all high days and holidays, especially over the winter period. We do have mostly better players these days. We are not far away from having a devastating team for this level too. A CF and a better midfielder?

I remember a period around Oct/Nov 2023 when we were really storming it but conceded late on in 3-2 wins over Swansea and Plymouth – our fans could barely bring themselves to applaud the players off the pitch. We were in "poor form" back then according to some, it was all terribly concerning.

Think the vibes are a bit weird now too at the moment if I'm honest, the season started flatly but you'd think we were the worst team ever to occupy third place. The direction of travel is very clear but there aren't that many who seem prepared to enjoy the ride and see where it goes.

Agree with this.

We are a bit inconsistent but despite that we are third, scoring plenty, reasonably tight at the back overall, and generally well placed.

A lot of us (def me included) can be guilty of overreacting to individual results/performances, but the overall direction of travel is good, after a slow start to the season.

In terms of atmosphere yesterday, it has always been that way in a game where the expectation is to win comfortably, muted cheers when taking the lead etc. That's not to excuse it, but I don't think it is unique to this season.

I think you and I have very similar views on the impatience/entitlement that has crept into modern life though, and it is often very evident at football.

Atmosphere has been crap all season. North stand is full of people with no interest in singing, when that's historically the noisy stand that doesn't bode well for creating an atmosphere. Real shame, on the rare occasion there is a bit more noise and energy - the last 10 mins against Watford was a bit better for example - it lifts the players.

The group I sit with have been here for many years... Through the bad times. We joke that we survived all the Paul's. The current crop of players are hard to love... Some arrived it seems without too much desire to be be here at first. The dollars on offer making the difference. We all know that it's just a job and it's a short career and that a contract is only worth the bog paper it's written on. Losing some of the players from last year either upwards (sic) or downwards changes how we feel about a side that brought joy to a starved fan base. Now we're just another currently well-funded club. We're funded because we have potential. Potential to bring rich rewards to an increasingly disparate and to a degree unknown investment group... Portman Holdings? At least it plays to the name.

So, no don't expect the grumpy old guys and gals to get too excited. We were here in the bad times, and we'll be here in the good too... As long as it doesn't price us out.

The players you loved signed for us in League 1 because we chucked money at them. Morsy didn't particularly want to drop down to the third tier. Those players were not very well loved either for their first 18 months at the club. How quickly people forget Cambridge and Bristol Rovers away where the fans turned on the players immediately before we went on that barnstorming run.

Fans are fickle, that's on the fans rather than the players.

Amen to this.

How can you not love Matusiwa covering every blade of grass, Philogene pulling worldies out of the hat on a regular basis, Nunez grinning like a loon after every goal?

What it boils down to, very simply, is that people want to see a team winning every week and we're not quite doing that yet.

Yes, it's not like they carry themselves that way. People seem intent on creating problems and it's very hard to get to the bottom of why. Beyond wider societal trends I suspect it's because we all know 2024 was a peak that can, for certain unique reasons, probably never be surpassed – but it's just time to get over that and enjoy what's in front.

Totally agree.

How can you not love George Hirst after all he's done for us and the effort he puts in?
How can you not love Walts and the way he trains hard, is humble and takes his opportunity whenever he gets it?
How can you not love Azor? What a player!
Or Jaden when he controls a football better than anyone I've ever seen?
Or Taylor who has never given up and played himself into the side this season?
Or Nunez who plays with a smile on his face?

I could go on and on.

Yes, all those much loved and heralded players from 2 years ago have all gone on to better things ….. oh wait.

Woolfenden on the bench most weeks, Broadhead as Wrexhams record signing on the bench most weeks, Morsy gets a move and within 8 weeks is back in the country. Chaplin, albeit being played out of position is not getting much love from his hometown support and Burgess is getting pelted from the Swansea fans also.

People need to give it a rest. We’ve got a bloody good group of players, who could really do with the backing of us right now.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

Fanbase has become self entitled and just expect us to win 4/5-0 and 10/10 performances from every player every game it seems.

McKenna goes on about togetherness etc some fans go on about how the squad isn’t as united as the last squad but the fans don’t help, leaving in droves before the FT whistle and not staying being to celebrate the win, that would help the connection, winning yesterday put us up for third and the ground was almost empty by the time the players went round to clap.

And then there’s the boo’ing and groaning when we’re playing it from the back, as we have done for four bloody years now, should be used to it ffs. Yes mistakes will happen, it’s always been part of that style, for any team, but the benefits and goals scored certainly outweigh the mistakes.

Little things like the players don’t even get a cheer when their name is read out now, always used to be a thing, and no COME ON YOU BLUES when we get a corner, always used to be a thing - and loud.

People just can’t be bothered or what?

I get that not everyone wants to sing all the time if at all but the majority around me don’t even join in with clapping through the songs apart from literally the odd one or two, even if half of them joined in it would help.

All of this.

I'm eternally surprised that people around me are shocked that the performance levels are low.

**Que hurling abuse at Hirst for trying to let the ball run across him or at Walton for not launching the ball to 5'9" Azon**

Playing at PR must be pretty poor at the moment, people just expect us to roll every team over 6-0 with the players we have. Go and look at Burnley's results from last year up to Christmas, you know, Burnley that finished with a huge points total.

They weren't turning teams over at all by any stretch, they won most by the odd goal, and had an awful awful lot of 0-0 games, finished with 100 points.

I don’t think it’s been good for a while to be honest (in my fairly small sample sizes of a few games a year). I remember McKenna trying to whip them after the draw against M’boro at home in the crucial run down the stretch and even Wolfie, when we were 1 up against Chelsea. Move the kids from A block into the north? Can’t hurt.

Yet when you see the goal against Southampton looks like top 3 all time limbs. So it’s not exactly lifeless in there if the situation merits.

Still pleased to see the win though, a sting in the tale against Wednesday wasn’t in my Christmas script. Win and move on.

The solution to the atmosphere is a group of younger singers who can be seen and heard. That's something the club might address somehow.

As for some of the other comebacks to my comments on here I think it's very difficult in a paragraph to nuance things. Perhaps some of the attitude that is evident in our fans is because we're all able to access everything said or done by player, club etc. No real news just miles of social media. It's a malaise throughout society in general.

My support is solid. I don't groan at the misplaced pass. I've never ever called for any manager to be sacked. Never booed at the end. Rarely left before the end unless there's other issues in my life. I'm stoic. I join in with the songs that I can when they eventually reach us in the lower West Stand.

But I despise the badge kissing, play acting, professional game. May be I've just got older (and wiser?)

Away fans from Wednesday, Town or any other club are invariably noisier as they can be bothered to travel hundreds of miles to watch their team, so they are usually more passionate.
Having been in the PL & spent hugely in the summer (despite the loss of Delap & Hutchinson) many of our fans expect us to win comfortably when at home at this level, especially against strugglers like Wednesday. Overall, our home record this season has been pretty good; it's some of the flat away performances that are a concern. Maybe an issue with motivation & leadership?
