A team we beat 3- 0 at home ... 09:53 - Dec 29 with 2018 viewsmuccletonjoe

Will be 16 points ahead of us if we lose today .
And any hope of catching them 13 points behind is pretty remote. But 16, is totally out of our range. Which will leave us looking at second place with Middlesborough, very much in the hands of our recruitment team, shouldn't leave anyone with a great deal of confidence tbh.

Ha.

Straight in with the glass half empty view Muccers.

Alternatively, if we win it's a real statement of intent, Coventry will only have 2 wins in 6, and we set ourselves up nicely for the January window.

We're a club built on false hope and disappointment.

I think I'm going to start following a different sport altogether, to avoid further heartache.

Long way to go as yet but it’s going to be a tough task to finish top me thinks.

But second seems doable still 👍

It was so so so much better when we were playing 4 CBs under Roy, getting the turnstiles painted by Clegg, when Jewell was signing defenders he bumped into on holiday, when Richie Wellens said none of the team cared, when we were losing away to Northampton watching on ifollow, when Magical Vegas was on the shirts, when Mick said the more the crowd wanted Celina the less he would play him.

Those were great times. Now look at us. Third in the league, well backed financially, with a great young coach and having enjoyed back to back promotions recently.

What went wrong?

An imposing task today Joe : 11 home games, 9 wins, 2 draws, 27 goals for, 7 goals against, cor blimey. If we do it, phwoar blimey.

The gap to Boro isn't nearly so imposing thankfully, as of this morning. Your verdict that we must buy in order to overhaul them looks pessimistic to me. The reverse fixture is at ours; you'd fancy us for 3 points at PR I'd hope. Their squad is naturally weaker in depth due to financial constraints. They too have Coventry away to come later in the season. Unlike us, they have the extra home game this half, that's an advantage to them on top of the 5 points, but it's very early to consider that insurmountable without further recruitment.

Expectations are that we'll all recruit of course, and we've tended to do better in January I'd say on balance. January '23 and '24, top class.

The astonishing thing is at the same point in our promotion season we had a point more than Cov do at the same point. It really was an incredible achievement.

In the same season we’d now be 5th and 20 points behind the league leader! This really is a year where everyone is taking points of everyone.

You really don't get it do you? That's exactly how one should start the week... and go through life. Being positive brings positive things to you.

The fact that you're whining about a defeat 8 hours before we even kick off must be some kind of record.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Yeah the predicted contenders have lost so many points to the pack so far, very surprising. Not set in stone that this will continue for us mind, even if Muccleton thinks it so.

Grumbling about a defeat/poor performance after the game is fair enough, even if some go overboard, but before the game has even been played is next level stuff!

"16pts is totally out of our range"

This opinion is blatantly stupid - of course 16 points can be made up, we have half the season left, anything can happen and we have improvement in us. 16 points can be made up in 6 games - with difficulty and a lot of luck of course.

Lots of teams have done it many times over the years.

It's far worse than that. If we lose all of our next six matches we could be 20 points off second, out of the cup and unlikely to make the play offs. It must be time for McKenna to go. Losing 6 on the trot is dreadful.

For what it's worth, I do think we may well lose today and would then be playing for second place (barring a massive meltdown from Coventry which is outside our control).

That's a valid point.

Also if the markets crash and funding dries up, we may find ourselves in administration, and a further 10+ points deducted.

The more I think about all of this the worse it becomes, 2 years from now battling relegation from League 2.

The horror of it all . . .

I really wish people would stop going on about Coventry. We're not going to catch Coventry. It's their year, just like Plymouth in 2022/23, and good luck to them.

Middlesbrough, on the other hand, are eminently catchable. They're not all that, apart from Hackney, who they may lose in January, and with a good transfer window we're more than capable of overturning them.
