| 10 Foods that belong in the bin on 15:05 - Feb 11 by GavTWTD | 1. All steam puddings bar Christmas Pudding It's sponge. Get over yourself 2. Tapioca, semolina and associated slurry Rice pudding is very nice 3. Spam, luncheon meat, corned beef, Ye Olde Oak horror in a tin I did buy a tin of corned beef from Liddl or Aldi and it had a full aorta or similar in it. Never again 4. Organs and offal - tripe, liver, kidney Does that include pate 5. Black Pudding Yeah, ok 6. Wagonwheels Don't be daft. tunnocks tea cakes too? Not overly keen but they're for kids. 7. Prawns and all crustaceans yeah I can live without those 8. Tofu (why, just why?), quorn and any meat substitute. Eat the real thing! I had tofu in a japanese restaurant and it was excellent. soaked up the flavours from the broth lovely 9. Macaroni cheese or cauliflower cheese (cauliflower, cheese or pasta - great but not as a combo) mac cheese is my comfort food and very happy to have a cauli cheese with a roast. you're missing out 10. Scrambled egg what?! scramble with chilli flakes on a bed of spinach and garlic tomatoes is very nice |
1. It’s adulterated sponge and not very nice. Put it in the bin. Old people might like it. This old person never did, particularly with golden syrup engine oil. 2. I’ve already excluded rice pudding which is ok 6. Wagonwheels are eaten. They count as food for the purposes of the discussion. And they’re not nice. I’ll replace with peanuts if you like. Awful, unpleasant taste. I like tunnocks tea cakes. A chum did an ‘old foods’ thing for his birthday some years ago and I tried one - still nice. 8. Tofu? Cat litter. It might be fashionable but it’s not nice - and I have tried it. 9. Mac or cauliflower cheese: unpleasant to the point of vomit inducing. No idea why. 10. Scrambled eggs. Last resort food. Horrible texture and dominated by the albumen. If you are trying to disguise it with garlic, spinach, chilli etc, have something else.

Thank you! I've wondered for years what that stuff was that was a bit like Angel Delight but not Angel Delight. I'd completely forgotten I'd wondered this, but yes, it was amazing wasn't it? I wonder if it's still possible to get anywhere?

Instant Whip. Now that is a blast from the past I’d also long forgotten about and yes, it was much nicer than Angel Delight.

how about "tastes like chicken, but with a fraction of the fat, carbon footprint, food poisoning risk (and no animals were killed)" pie? maybe vegan chicken conveys it more simply after all!

I actually like red onion chutney and the others, especially Indian ones. 1, 2 and 4 are great choices though.

| 10 Foods that belong in the bin on 12:48 - Feb 11 by mutters | I cook all my scrambled eggs in the microwave. Agree they can be rubbery if overcooked. The trick is to catch them early and let them finish on the plate when they are still steaming. So much easier than a pan as job done in under two mins. I do agree though that the pan way of cooking is better but for me when I am grabbing lunch or breakfast it's really not that noticeable |
If you do them in a small very hot frying pan they only take about 45 seconds on the hob!

I get that approach but as someone who underwent an exclusion diet thirty years ago and had their life profoundly changed by the discovery of an intolerance I have eaten more for health (and to avoid the things that make me ill) than for gastronomic experience ever since. I have my excesses, biscuits mainly but on the whole I can see a phenomenal value in soft on the gut puddings like semolina, in Mediterranean diet foods like pasta, pesto and olives and in avoiding stuff with palm oil in it, an excess of fat (saturated or unsaturated) and a mass of ingredients which are there for shelf life rather than healthy life. I used to get that afternoon lethargy by eating a sandwich at my desk and finishing off with, say, a Mars Bar. Now I'm straight down the line mainly eggs or porridge for breakfast, at least two pieces of fruit a day, tofu or Quorn three times a week, no more mince in favour of chops or steak a couple of times a week. Allow myself fish and chips on Fridays. A couple of squares of the 70% cocoa chocolate and I rarely feel the hunger for any more. Kefir in small quantities an hour or two before sleeping quietens the gut and I'm generally in good health. For chrissake, I'm 70 and I spent an hour putting up a mini scaffold tower for our local hall on Monday evening. [Post edited 11 Feb 20:20]

Yes, needs are also a factor, sometimes a defining factor. I should know given Mrs C has eating limitations. The thread was not intended to be too serious.

As indicated previously, the OP was not about necessity, just a bit of fun about preference as indicated by the light way in which the title was written. What people like, what they don’t. Need, health conditions what one has had to do in the past or the present was not the intention of it.
