Conceding 5 to Wrexham in any context begs so many questions doesn’t it?

Highest paid manager in our history? In the league? Massive spend and wage bill. Rotated for this game to give us the best possible chance and we are lucky not to have conceded a penalty too today.

What exactly has gone on this season? We go off for warm weather training and they had a game in the week and we look cooked.

Baffling

Cock piss Partridge.

Complete shambles. It’s sickening how much we’ve spent to get to the levels or lack of we’re at.

We have a squad that probably is the most expensive in this league and we look just about good enough for top 6. It’s not about being entitled, however we just have not been consistently good enough this season, we lack something and I’m going to stand by the fact we are far too predictable and pedestrian under KM.

We made it 3-2 out of nothing right after a bad first half. Thats what makes it weirder. If we had been 3 or 4 nil down it’d be bad but you’d get it, but to just stop scrapping against this lot….

I hope he's not done here, I don't think today is evidence of that in isolation, but there's a lot of people still living off things that aren't even last season but before then. It doesn't really help or clarify who and what we are does it?

Ashton doing two roles whilst we seem to have spent so much to reap very little immediate reward is going to be received differently over the ocean with the investors I'd assume. We definitely need to forge an identity and it beggars belief we haven't.

All very Leedsy unfortuantely.

At least Leeds had (and still have) a decent scouting network

They don't buy £15, 20 million players in the Championship that aren't fit for purpose in the division

At 3-2 it was time to calm the game down. We were far too open and all first half we were getting overrun in midfield. It happened consistently in the Premier League, especially in the last 25, and KM never tried to counteract it. At 3-2, we'd turned the game around in 5 minutes and it screamed for us to calm it down, maybe bring on Neil and play 3 across the middle to shut down that space. Not for KM. Then at 4-3 down, blind panic and we effectively had no midfield at all. Some see tactical genius. Not sure myself what that was today. Oh, and O'Shea was a shambles.

Exactly this. His insistence on never ever changing the formation under any circumstances is really quite arrogant, but more improtantly it is costing us points.

It’s has happened constantly this season, how many times have we been caught out by a punt foward leaving 1 v 1 or 2 v1 ? I can think of Oxford, Derby, Blackburn Charlton, today without even looking. It is just bizarre and quite often ala today, completely unnecessary.

This team has quality that is too good for the championship in areas eg Clarke and Philogene but doesn’t have the right blend, I’m not sure why.

It does feel like we should have a plan B formation when A isn’t working.

The only Muff in Town.

We often seem to get overrun in midfield. I don’t know whether it’s the 10 not dropping back enough, or the 8 committing too far forward. Even Matusiwa gets caught up the pitch at times, which makes no sense. In theory we should have 3 in the middle of the park, yet it often doesn’t look like it.

I think it’s the fact we have pulled for Taylor so often. He was meant to be 3rd or 4th choice this season, but McKenna chased him and seems to really rate him. He does everything but nothing excellently.

He was involved in a couple of our goals but also lost Windass for theirs. A lot of games he seems to make a lot of effort but leaves holes everywhere. Hopefully Neil changes this, but I also wonder why we kept Jens then seem to ignore his strengths.

So often we’ve got into midfield dogfights and let teams play their game - Millwall away was a great example.

Aside from the Windass goal (when he was ball-watching) I thought Taylor had one of his better games yesterday. His ball carrying was pretty good, particularly in the 1st half, and I thought he linked well with Mehmeti and Azon in particular. At times, it felt like Wrexham had an extra man in midfield, but this didn't really change when Neil came on.

Looking at the squad as dispassionately as possible, it seems fair to make the following comments:-

- Striker situation absurd, as it has been for the majority of Ashtons tenure. I'm minded to say that this is, perhaps, the defining characteristic of this team this season. Hirst is shot, and Azon is young - how on earth is there no support there for either of them? What even is Akpom?

- RIght side an absolute mess - £40m of talent there, or on loan (and we were ready to drop another £15m on Azeez from 'wall), and a £300k Burns back from long-term injury is, right now, clearly the obvious choice to start.

- Midfield - where would we be without Matusiwa? (Probably 10th). A hugely expensive Cajuste not the player any of us thought he would be this season, not even close. Taylor is so limited, but clearly preferred to Cajuste. Neil, by all accounts, a proper upgrade, but not trusted to start right now - can't understand that, can only assume fitness is the issue.

- Defence - despite yesterday, seems pretty good. Kipre does far more good than bad, Furlong usually reliable, Davis is Davis. I'm not a big O'Shea fan, but he's mainly capable enough. Greaves a very reasonable deputy at CB or LB.

- Keepers - neither Walton nor Palmer are brilliant, but both are fine at Champ level (IGNORE YESTERDAY KLAXON)

Nunez and Philo will be welcome returns, and Mehmeti looks very good. Still not convinced that Boro will last the pace, but they've got the points on the board - whereas I have no real faith that we will win our games in hand.... assuming Fratton Park ever hosts another game of football...

If you are setting up a team against us it is so easy as we follow the same approach every game.

Get in our faces and rough us up a little in CM and against the lightweight wingers. Defend our left hand side and press our CBs when we have ball.

That will stop us and we will give the ball away in bad areas and get punished.

KM used to be agile and creative with tweaks and changes from game to game, now it’s a slow, cautious and the same tactics every game with same subs every game.

If the opposition know what you are going to do then they have a fair chance of stopping it.

Yes ,on paper, it must be easy to prepare to play against Ipswich but, hang on, we are still in a position to gain automatic promotion.

This reflects our qualities, it may cry out for a plan B, even if it is give players more freedom to try something different.

K Mc believes in his style of play so don’t expect things to change.
