Returning UK nationals from UAE 12:51 - Mar 2 with 2187 viewsle2blue

See that limited flights have restarted from Abu Dhabi, and mass repatriation is being planned for UK nationals returning from the Middle East. For those tax exiles, I trust that we're deploying HMRC to recover funds. They should also be asked to make social media posts about how grateful they are to be home!

As soon as they land on UK soil will they be liable to UK taxes? Or is there some loophole where it won’t count if they have to return home?

Surely they should just stop at the nearest safe country?

Glad I'm not the only one thinking along these lines. Obviously I wish them a safe and successful return, but at what point do 300,000 non uk tax payers have to fund themselves?

Surely the usual suspects will be up in arms about people coming from the Gulf region being bailed out using our hard earned taxes?

Perhaps it will be a case of tax exiles first, rather the usual women and children first.

You would suspect this to be a temporary relocation & that those involved will be more than happy to fund themselves.

Quite possibly, and it's a bit of a facetious argument I suppose, but it's more about expectations and responsibilities to me. Swan off and enjoy the perks of the tax breaks in a hugely more turbulent area, but when that risk turns bad they still have the expectations of being bailed out.

No.

Most people won't be liable for any tax in the UK.

It's not any kind of legal basis, more a moral one. The basis being that they're not paying taxes to the UK and have moved somewhere volatile, with the tax dodge a big part of it. Now that volatility has come to pass and they need help from the country where they're no longer paying taxes.

Doesn't work like that, and it shouldn't necessarily, but it's quite annoying considering the reasoning a lot of people go out there in the first place.

Did it give you a thrill? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper: “This is deeply stressful obviously for people because we’re talking about a lot of people who are holidaymakers, who were transit passengers just passing through or people on business visits to the region and who we want to make sure can get safely home.”

One of my daughter's is cabin crew and often flies these routes. Thankfully not this week.
