Are the pessimists allowing a little optimism now? 16:54 - Apr 12 with 3278 viewsDubtractor

Not intended to dig anyone out, as I get that some of us are more inclined to pessimism than others, but would be interested to hear the thoughts of some of those who have talked down our chances all season.

Definitely. I thought we’d be lucky to make top 6, now I’m starting to believe we beat Portsmouth and avoid defeat against Boro that’ll be us almost promoted. Only concern is Southampton but I’m hoping their cup semi will be on their minds and they slip up before we play them.

I don't know if I'd go as far to call myself a 'pessimist' before, but I definitely feel optimistic.

When I went out for a couple of beers last night with some none town fan mates and they asked me 'do you think you'll finish top 2?' this is the first time this season I've said 'yes,' yesterdays game and the recent run has given me trust, faith and confidence in this group now to the point where I believe we can get the job done (obviously doesn't necessarily mean I think we will do it, but I can see it happening now).

In yesterdays performance I saw everything in this group that I didn't think they had: Had graft, working for each other, working for the team as a team, organisation, street smarts and match control, a real winning mentality.

Like I say, doesn't go to say that I definitely think we'll do it, but to quote Paul Cook 'I'm now watching this team in belief, rather than hope.'

Dunno if that answers your question, but that's what my slightly hungover, back to work tomorrow dreading mind has for you this evening...

We could already be promoted by the time we play them

With respect, there was nothing at all to suggest we wouldn't make the top 6. People were ignoring over half a season of top 2 form.

We had a slow start for ten games. Without that we would be up by now.

Nope. Not until we're mathematically over the line. Tottenham's issues have almost increased the importance of going up this year and, whilst we're now in a very good position, we still need to get the points on the board. Claim ten points from the next four and I might start to breathe but there's still a way to go as of yet. Add to this, from where my pessimisim is rooted, in the five games before Norwich, there were decent portions of each where we've been second best. Even yesterday, we struggled to do the basics at times, such as finding a fellow man in blue.

For those who are feeling relaxed and optimistic, good on you. I just can't shake the above and wish I could.

I’ll give us a lot of credit for the results post Wrexham and we have been consistent enough since Charlton without going on huge winning streaks.

I had Boro getting 90 odd points though even with stuttering here and there. their fall off as been incredible. Not to take anything away from this recent run but it’s obviously helped us out as well.

You've spent most of McKenna's tenure here worrying and putting a negative spin on everything. If we claim 10 points from our next 4 games then we're up with 2 to spare. That would be lovely but QPR at home final game isn't the worst fixture in the world should we need a point or 3 to secure promotion and there's no reason we can't go to Saints and get something there either.

Now we are second we will hold on to it and that’s great. Those telling us it was a stronger league and other deluded nonsense though are very quiet on that now it’s be predicated on our rivals collapsing etc.

We’ve definitely improved in recent weeks and been far more pragmatic than earlier debacles too and yesterday was a great example of that.

Chances are we’ve done enough, but to be this far behind a Coventry we doubled fairly easily tells its own story. I think anyone championing this campaign too much is overcompensating.

No, on paper, QPR at home is almost the perfect game to end on, with them having nothing to play for.

Chelsea haven't beaten us for 15 years.

That's how it works right Norwich? Right?

I think as Town fans, we’re naturally cautious as we aren’t normally allowed nice things, so when they look like they could happen, we don’t want to get hoodwinked in to believing it’s going to happen until it does.

Also, I think when we are so close to the subject matter, you see the details - you know who our games in hand and what our team is capable of, good and bad. A Stoke fan friend of mine has been saying up until yesterday we have a massive advantage. I said it was a slight advantage until yesterday - a massive advantage would be 5-6 points ahead of third. But the bookies still had us as 1-6 on before yesterday’s games to get top two.
May be those who are slightly distanced from it and not so emotionally invested see it with clearer vision.

That said, the results since the international break have definitely fallen our way, partly through our doing and partly thanks to Boro and Wall only taking 2 points between them.

We just need to maintain reasonable form and we can do it.

Everyone’s banging on about Southampton, but three wins from our last six makes them irrelevant, and another couple of points to us or dropped by Boro and Wall will do it.

Now we’re getting close, the best case scenario is to power through the remaining games and see where that takes us. Win both the games in hand and we’re only four points behind Cov… we can still catch them, albeit it probably needs a flawless set of results as well as them losing a couple.

More realistically, the best case scenario could see us up by the time we play Southampton, and they’ll already be in the POs, so it becomes a meaningless end of season kick about with them not wanting to get injured and also hungover from the FAC Semi. Then the QPR game is a last day of term fun day out.

I think it's fair to have a few digs. There are plenty of us optimists who've received digs throughout the season for being happy clappers etc. There were a few even calling for McKenna's head, saying he's been found out, saying he has no plan B, saying he sticks with his favourites. Some were doubting we'd finish top 6.

It would be nice if they came back and held their hands up, perhaps in this thread. But I doubt we'll see them... until next year. When the going gets tough they'll be back.

I think we’ve been unfortunate in our two other promotions and the relegation in terms of the strength of the league and points totals. This could be our lucky one.

Boro and Millwall are not your regular opponents for second places as the last month has shown. We’ve done well to recover post Wrexham though.

I’m always glass half full but with a favour to being optimistic and personally nearly always keep the faith and believe, McKenna is no fool and he probably this group would not completely come together for some time , he certainly has his knockers through the season but has never let us down , the premier season was always going to be hard , as it will be again when we go up ( hopefully in not to distant future) .
Those that criticise more often than not , are quite possibly reasonably new fans or dare I say trolls
In McKenna we trust .

Not even me? As a pessimist yes I am feeling more optimistic but still concerned about Southampton if I am honest. 4 points from next two and I'll be very confident.

At the moment just enjoying finally doubling that lot again, other results were a nice bonus but this like winning the home game the highlights of the season so far, whatever happens I'll be eternally grateful to these players for achieving that, it's been a long time coming.

Would be great to go up with time to spare but personally would rather we do it at home to QPR where 27k can enjoy it rather than 2.5k.

I think Southampton may well see to it that this happens so long as we do our part.

Ideally we'd go go into that game 3 clear of them with a considerable GD advantage.
