VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 18:33 - May 10 by jasondozzell

But who cares about the right decision?!!

We are watching an entertainment product designed for TV. I do not watch football to watch men with headphones who look like boring corporate types look at a laptop screen.

So if we're in West Ham's position next season and we get a decision like that go against us, you're not coming on here and complaining about it?

It's just tedious isn't it.

The product has to come first.

We will see the same at the world cup. Quarters with ad breaks. Half time shows. vAR 'Afrer review'

The truth is the top flight is boring because money means only 4 clubs can win ti. So now they create sports entertainment instead.

I agree with this sentiment, wholeheartedly, but that absolutely wasn't a decision to really support it.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Correct decision. VAR is flawed, but overall an improvement over football without it. This isn't the 1970s. No one wants to go back to lawless, free-for-all challenges on the keeper.

Also, I'd prefer West Ham to go down than Spurs. Corrupt porn-baron Chairman, as dislikeable as ours. Drove them into giant white-elephant stadium that West Ham fans hate. I can see them spiralling downwards in a half-empty stadium. Serve the WH owners and Boris Johnson (London Mayor) right for a dumb decision to build a stadium was never suited to be hybrid athletics/football (football was only legacy option), and then make disparate, botched attempt to retrofit "legacy" to it, which involved us taxpayers subsidising West Ham.

It's a stain on the game.

It's designed for TV audiences not match going supporters.

It is entertainment. Not football.

The goalline tech works because it's an objective decision.

VAR often ends up being those subjective areas. Plus the whole funding a reason to disallow a goal.

Small minded people in corporate offices who are drunk on their own power.

Have you spent the afternoon in the pub?

There’s no way you’ll convince me if Town were one nil up and Walton was fouled like that at a corner that you wouldn’t be calling for VAR to intervene then.

Nah, that's a clear foul. Pulls the keepers arms down as he tries to catch it.

This and it’s against West Ham so all is good.

Yeah that's fair. It probably was a foul. But it was a great equaliser and exciting.

These people would have ruled out Jimmy Glass's goal. 'It's going to VAR... They've spotted a shirt pull '.

I'll get a load of grief for this but also Maradona's hand of God. Imagine that going to VAR.

It's the revenge of the tech nerds who are platformed by corrupt sports entertainment execs.

I have 😉

That's a pretty flimsy argument as obviously I'd want the decision to go our way but it doesn't mean I want the system.

It'll be quarter halves next.

You've lost your head on this one. Take 10 mins away from the laptop!

If there wasn't VAR then you are right we have to accept the ref decision and that would be hard in real time to see everything going on so see why he gave it. Where there is VAR they HAVE to make the right decisions or all fans will just be critical. Whether you like it or not when you have got a rational head on you will accept that was a foul.

I agree it was technically a foul but I don't see why we know need to live in a world of slow motion replays while men in an office talk nonsense.

The game is all about rhythm. VAR destroys it.

But we have the system and in this instance the system worked.

Maybe but call me old fashioned, I used to like football when you watched a game and not a live feed of people on Microsoft teams drawing lines on screens etc.

The problem is VAR. Get rid of it.

But the onfield decision was a goal, which I guess you think was wrong. So you want it both ways?

As others have said you are picking a bad example, but you are right, in general how VAR is USED is poor and inconsistent. You have an argument to suggest we don't need VAR, but we would then be having a different argument about bad refereeing.

"It's designed for TV audiences not match going supporters."

I completely agree with you about this, and it's why those in the stadium, as well as those at home, should be allowed to hear the fourth official's discussion with his counterparts and the referee.

In terms of "finding a reason", that is a valid point but they didn't have to look too hard to find one today. As I said elsewhere, my main issue was how long in took considering it was clear and obvious.

Yes, it was an obvious foul on first viewing so could have been ruled out within about five seconds. Ludicrous that it took so long.

Yeah without VAR that’s given.

I’d rather no VAR and we could’ve had scenes that meant something.

VAR isn’t football.

You don’t really get scenes when a goal is overturned by VAR though

Not naturally in the moment compared to West Ham scoring that ‘goal’.

I get what you're saying but I'm sure, if you were in the Arsenal end, the goal being disallowed was an obvious "moment", and one which felt like they had scored themselves.

This is why we need the appeal option.... in that instance Arsenal immediately appeal( provided they havent wasted them) and yhe standing ref reviews the images say for a maximum of 30 seconds and then HE makes his considered decision. Id also advocate that when an appeal is made all players go to their own penalty area immediately.

Looking forward to a re acquaintance with VAR like someone looks forward to a bout of migraine ( I don't fortunately ). It's an impossible hope, but I hope non the less that all refs suddenly turn into the ref who actually did the first leg of Boro/Saints on Saturday, Farai Hallam, who made a sort of history in the PL in January, on his debut as a PL ref, when refusing to overturn a VAR review of a not awarded penalty by him, being the first time it happened during the season, thereby sticking the finger up!

The guy also happens to be far and away the best ref I saw in the Championship season just ended. Did Sheff U at home and Portsmouth away. So three appearances I saw and got 2 outstandings and a really good from me. Hope to see him in the PL. Be great to see a ref that actually thinks it's his job to run a match rather than a couple of idiots with their faces glued to a computer!

During that incident Rice rugby tackled a West ham player before anyone touched the keeper. If VAR hadn't chosen to ignore that, it should have been a west ham penalty, assuming advantage couldn't be played due to the obvious foul on the keeper. I'm not used to seeing Arsenal so desperate to break up play by continuously fouling. Ive no sympathy for West Ham though because they should have been playing like that all season.
