It’s a bit annoying that it’s Arsenal, that have been bullying teams from corners all year and must have got away with a few themselves. Even in this Rice is bearhugging someone.

Said it before, mark out two boxes either side of penalty spot and each team has to be in their box at corners, no more holding, pulling, pushing etc which right now is becoming ridiculous and impossible for the ref.. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
| VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 22:05 - May 10 with 876 views | grow_our_own | While being on-balance a VAR advocate, I do get the criticism that it compromises goal joy. Everything being reviewed is too much. You're never quite sure if a goal has been scored. Limited captain challenges is the solution. One total or one per half. Ball in net and no challenge signal from captain = goal. Simple. Everyone can see the captain on the pitch, so it's clear. The players know whether there's been an injustice without having to watch a replay, and captain is closer to the ref to quickly raise a challenge than manager. No back-and-forth to the bench, waiting for manager to watch his own replay on a tablet causing further delay. Right now football is played by 22 professional cheats. Diving used to be criticised by the British as something only continental Europeans did, now we do it as much as anyone. I'd dive too in the current rules. Diving, complaining to the ref, and getting into his head that he's biased pays. You're more likely to get favourable decisions and win. Now imagine a world where a diver, who knows he's dived, asks his captain to challenge. Captain challenge is rejected bc it was a dive. Diver feels an idiot because he has been an idiot. Team has lost a precious challenge. In reality, they won't appeal, and won't dive in the first place especially if they know oppo captain has all-important challenge remaining. Quantity of cheating will reduce massively. Football is improved. Side-beneift: teams are rewarded for having at least one player with a brain: the captain. Reputation of footballers being thick is reduced. Right now captains' formal responsibilities don't go much beyond calling a coin toss. Players become more central in the process instead of decisions exclusively by faceless bureaucrats sitting in an office somewhere. [Post edited 10 May 22:19]

(n/t) on 20:00 - May 10 by norfsufblue | This is why we need the appeal option.... in that instance Arsenal immediately appeal( provided they havent wasted them) and yhe standing ref reviews the images say for a maximum of 30 seconds and then HE makes his considered decision. Id also advocate that when an appeal is made all players go to their own penalty area immediately. |
So many reasons the appeal idea is a terrible one. Sorry.

People want as close to the 'right' decision as possible (subjectivity seems to be ignored as a concept these days) but people want decisions to be made organically and authentically more, in my opinion. Which would mean VAR doesn't exist. [Post edited 11 May 8:35]

Decision was correct. Insofar as it goes. But if they are goijng to VAR, there were two very strong penalty shouts in the lead up.

| VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 08:33 - May 11 with 685 views | Churchman | This is an interesting thread. My opinion is that I’d keep goal line technology but ditch VAR. Having seen it ‘live’ it kills the spontaneous nature of the game. Football is not like cricket with natural breaks that lend themselves to reviews that don’t disturb the flow of it. In cricket you also see quickly if something is in line, ball tracks, foot over the line etc quickly. In football waiting five minutes just kills the game and there’s no guarantee they get it right at the end of it. Yesterday in real time it looked like a goal. Almighty scuffle and a good hit. 1-1. Did VAR get the overturn right. Probably. Almost certainly from the slow motion. But does probably or almost certainly justify the faffing around? The game is about human endeavour, contact, the moment unless you turn it into netball with feet. Within that is human error. It’s part of the game and always will be. So in conclusion I’d bin VAR. Had yesterday’s foul on the keeper not been picked up, it’d have been tough on Arsenal. But in a season of games they are bound to have had favourable ones. Solution? Better referees and accept that not everything in contact sport is perfect. | | | |

"game is about human endeavour, contact" - it's not about grabbing the keeper's arm as they're trying to catch a cross. Contact is legit when shielding the ball, shoulder-to-shoulder, unintentional obstruction, or if it's light enough not to disrupt the ball-possessor. No one is trying to remove such legit contact from football. "in a season of games they are bound to have had favourable ones" - let's at least aim for rational refereeing rather than by superstition/luck/hope. Improve VAR, reduce the interruptions via captain challenges & reduce the cheating. Don't kill it. Give players more ownership over it. Make it a contest of 11 vs 11 footballers, including one on each team with a brain. "Better referees" - everyone hates referees. Very few people want to be one. Former players don't. It's an impossible endeavour without tech assistance. Hence it attracts mostly low-calibre people. Shallow pool of talent to choose from. Need to improve the system of refereeing, give players more ownership over it, reduce their and crowd's whinging to referees & trying to get into their head. If players really think there's been an injustice, then they can stake a challenge on it. Reducing the blame on referees will make it a more enjoyable and attractive role to undertake. | VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 08:53 - May 11 with 640 views | darkhorse28 | I think 99% of people would agree it’s a foul. The 1% are West Ham fans. Are you ok with errors to make the game interesting when it’s against us? That Birmingham ‘goal’ that ‘might’ have seen us finish a point behind Millwall in third, and change our entire narrative and clubs entire future. Great for us. A bad day for football. Lots of decisions went against us too, I know, but surely we want integrity and teams getting results they deserve. Awful outcome at West Ham for the title race, a great outcome for the integrity of the game. You’re blinded by emotion. The only problem is. Only YOUR tribal emotions seem to count, I wonder how Arsenal fans feel? Why do only your tribal needs matter, even more than the integrity of football. I wonder how Birmingham fans feel, their manager will lose his career, Millwall? A point behind us, and we win the lottery that day. I’d rather not have VAR tbh, but it did its job v well yesterday. If we’re making things up for TV and for you to enjoy, why don’t we give some teams a 2 goal start? Imagine how good for TV that would be - a sniper on the roof? SKY to decide if goals do or don’t count? Be careful what you wish for, a rules based game is kind of essential to sport. Otherwise it’s just a TV soap opera. Have you considered US wrestling might be the sport for you?? Manufactured drama, with no competition or result, it’s only about the perceived drama, you’d like it.
| VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 09:06 - May 11 with 629 views | baxterbasics | I keep defending the peno Hirst got vs 'boro on the basis tha tthe defender had his arms around Hirst. I want more of those given. Thankfully didn't need VAR to spot that one. In this case it was more than just hands on. It was clearly multiple illegal restrictions on the goalkeeper's movement. Outcome was correct. Doesn't change the fact that VAR is ruining the PL with stoppages and uncertainty almost every time there's a goal. | |

| VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 18:35 - May 10 by urbanpenguin | It was a foul on the keeper. But I also counted two fouls on West Ham players at the same time. I don't know how to untangle anything like that. |
That is exactly the point. At every corner, there are usually several fouls being committed by both attackers & defenders. Referees usually ignore them, occasionally giving the soft decision of a free kick to the defence. Either the PL uses VAR to give a free kick or a penalty at every corner in the hope that players will change their behaviour, or let the mayhem continue. This issue with yesterday's game was that, although the Arsenal goalkeeper was fouled, multiple similar fouls have been allowed all season, but as it's obviously a crucial goal for both teams, VAR has to get involved & rule out the goal. How many Arsenal goals from corners could/should have been disallowed this season?

Agreed. Corners are boring. Random whether ref blows up for something. Let the players decide. If attacking captain feels there's been a foul, then let them challenge for particular instances of contact. After consistently giving pens for a while, the grappling will stop. Right now ref & VAR control room are too timid to want to get involved when defender fouls. Take the decision whether to formally review out of their hands.

Wouldn't have been given as a foul at the other end if Arse had scored, and wouldn't have been given as a foul if it had been anyone but the keeper. The fact that it takes so long to decide if it is a foul or not kinda proves that it wasn't.

Correct and it must stop. Refs are weak and don’t want to send too many players off. However if Refs did get their act together and start getting cards out straight away maybe players and managers would get the message. Some of these instances look accidental but there’s a deliberate attempt by players to take risks in the penalty area. But what to do. It’s all down to fifa etc and get some authority and get players to respect the refs and the laws

The same with diving and backchat. You even see players kicking the ball away and not getting yellow cards. You'd get a few weeks of quite a few red cards but it would eventually stop and the refs would have authority.

The rules are there, but is a referee supposed to toss a coin at every corner, to decide whether he gives a penalty kick or a free kick to the defence? I accept that one a lot of penalty kicks had been given, defenders might change their behaviour.

| VAR is a disgrace. (n/t) on 13:39 - May 11 with 395 views | RetroBlue | VAR is not the disgrace but the additional " officials" interpretation on what they see. Worst thing to happen to the game IMHO. Just how many officials does it take to officiate a game? Maybe they should return to refs actially using their linesmen, and not the linesmen waiting to get the order from the ref. .. and yes, they ARE "linesmen!" | |
