and planned anti immigrant protests tonight. If true, I fear it could get nasty. This really couldn't have come at a worse time for the UK.

It's impossible on here sometimes. Every comment becomes an exercise in finding the 'real meaning', spotting the hidden agenda or explaining why someone else's concerns aren't valid.

The certainty with which some people declare themselves right is always impressive. The self-awareness, less so.

Anyway, good luck. I should have expected nothing else.

You literally came into the thread to tell someone else that they shouldn't post what they had posted.

But Rob hasn’t really made any points - he was asked what he actually sees in front of him and he hasn’t responded.

So what if people downvotes your post or any post - it’s simply a shorthand way to disagree with what someone has posted.

if he flew from paris to dublin - i assume on a eire visitor visa or equivalent - and then crossed the open border, why don't more people do that rather than using the small boat route?

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Governments do that kind of thing. I’ve seen it done first hand (well close enough to first hand) on more than one occasion. Not conspiracy, just what I’ve seen.

In this instance I never said they were suppressing crime numbers or that Home Office don’t know or are presenting bits of information or guessing it, I asked the question because I don’t know. Perhaps you do?

No conspiracy in that.

No. Its a fair and reasonable pre-emption of the way bigots will doubtless try to make dishonest political capital out of it, if it turns out an immigrant was involved.

In passing I will point out that there were 18 recorded paramilitary style assaults / punishment beatings in NI last year. I have a sneaking suspicion that is a much bigger issue than stabbings by immigrants. But that doesn't provide an agenda with leverage...

That's a very interesting stat regarding paramilitary violence - funny, isn't it, how none of those eighteen incidents seem to have garnered any media attention.

Out of interest - are these stabbings and other incidents that get national coverage the only ones that happen? Or is there some sort of editorial decision as to which incidents are worthy of coverage?

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

So you are asking the question of me ‘are you stupid?’

Your question was "Are the government massaging the information?"

That is asking if there is a conspiracy. You can't hide behind 'just asking a question' when someone rightly points out you're suggesting a conspiracy to suppress things.

The post said:

‘Open question: has crime gone down or has reported and/or recorded crime gone down?

I ask because with the tories taking an axe to police numbers, stations closed, advice given to not stop shoplifters, burglaries not investigated (anecdotal statement - I’ve no evidence), is everything/anything recorded?

Are the government massaging the information? Governments do that for political gain or survival. I’ve seen it done.’

It starts with the two words ‘Open question’. No hiding, no suggestion. The first two words. I then give the explanation as to why I’m asking the question. Is it a valid one to ask? I believe so because I’ve seen their predecessors do such stuff.

If I’d said ‘I believe etc etc etc’ your point might be valid. But I didn’t. No hiding. I asked a question. If your answer is no. The Government would never do such a thing or the evidence a b c says no, fine.

Not crime related, but successive governments have been accused of massaging the unemployment figures, NHS waiting lists, spending etc.

As for last night's attack. It was more than a knife attack. It was an atemopt at decapitation, which has shocked a lot of people.

If you said Joe bloggs was stabbed outside the local shopping centre then most people would respond with a shrug of the shoulders. But the video, and I wish I hadn't seen it, is genuinely shocking.

Unfortunately, Farage, Robinson, Lowe and co will mobilise the knuckle draggers and capitalise on this.

Stow shared a link to Fraser Nelson (someone I don't particularly care for) and he comes with multiples avenues of evidence. He uses crime survey results to show that crime has reduced by 50% in the last 20 years. He uses survey's because it captures those instances where crime may not be reported. Not a perfect measure, but a 50% fall is indicative of falling crime.

He also bring in the number of murders. While someone may not report a stolen bike as they know the underfunded police will just write a report and tell you womp womp, murder would naturally have a higher report rate. This has gone down from a peak in the early 2000s (note the high point on his graph includes 173 victims of Harold Shipman which skews things slightly), but has still seen a significant reduction. Down about 40% in England and Wales if you remove Harold Shipman's victims all being counted in one year. In London, the horrific crime ridden hell hole it's down even further, the rate of murders is down over 60%.

Then as has also been pointed out elsewhere in the thread, we get data on assaults and stabbings from the NHS, significantly reduces admissions across all types. Still potential that some attacks don't go to the Hospital, but I don't think over the last 20 years half of people who are assaulted have decided to just not bother with the NHS.

What's actually interesting is that recorded crime, the thing you suggested they massage doesn't show any real decline. It shows a slight upwards trend in violence while surveys and hospitals say the opposite. That suggests either the crime surveys have degraded in accuracy and the NHS are somehow missing huge numbers of patients, or that the police have actually got better at recording crimes (even if they don't do a good job of solving a lot of them).

Either way, I'm not sure you can safely argue there is any 'massaging' unless you've got some actual data to back it up.

Link to the Fraser Nelson article. All his data is sourced under each graphic. I referred to the 1st, 2nd, 3, 4th/5th (same data with different filters) and 7th charts.
