Neither is Discord, which will have a far higher U16 user-base. There's no conspiracy here.

No teenager is going on blue sky for their social media dopamine hit. Its full of fairly dull middle aged people, like me.

It is not encouraging the social media companies to fix any of their known problematic issues, but hopefully this is just setting the direction of travel

It isn't "the one app" that's not banned In all honesty it's too small to even register. If kids start flocking to it then I'm sure it'll get included on the list There's tonnes of other social media platforms that also aren't on the banned list. This really doesn't need to be a culture war thing

Alternatively, it’s a lot easier to pressurise social media companies to take action if the law demands it. Appreciate it’s much harder if it’s only the UK and a few others who are introducing a ban, but I can see the sense in it as part of a wider approach. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I suspect engagement has been tried and failed. Perhaps action by the govt will prompt action by the SM companies...

No, although there argument is that you cannot reasonably enforce that they don't drink alcohol or smoke / vape either, but it doesn't mean you don't try and limit the harm done. I do see where they are coming from. I personally preferred the other options they were looking at but hey ho.

From the Government's perspective it just commits them to continuing the politically braindead practice of arresting pensioners for holding up signs (and thus reminding a large section of their likely/possible voters of why they dislike them). I mean it's probably far simpler. They only list apps/services that have enough membership or membership within that demographic to be relevant. You'll notice they haven't announced that the ban will apply to TWTD or every internet forum. If you want a balance among twitter-esque sites, they also haven't announced restrictions on TruthSocial either.

Although when laws are made to prevent young people from buying alcohol, it's done in tandem with legal culpability and punishments for shop keepers selling it in violation. The government's approach to child safety online seems to be (IMO) focusing on users and absolving the social media companies of responsibility.

Scared/deferential towards Musk/Zuckerberg, aren't they. Also, wait until everyone of voting age discovers all the personal info they're going to have fork over to wildly untrustworthy tech fascists to make this stuff work.

| A good day for the Govt on 16:45 - Jun 15 with 1135 views | Axeldalai_lama | Now they just need to teach critical thinking and analysis, incorporating drive for clicks, fake news and reality of interpreting AI. Otherwise you're left with parents thinking they've won the battle and just kicking the can until kids are 16. The only potential good thing about exposure to socials and generally having a digital consumption pre 16 is the ability for parents to talk to their kids about the realities of what they are looking at and how individuals and companies may exploit them one way or another. Broadly good news but by no means a cure all. | | | |
| A good day for the Govt on 19:29 - Jun 15 with 998 views | Kievthegreat | Appreciate the main topic of discussion has been the social media ban, but this is quite amusing from the judge in the Palestine Action case: "It (Palestine Action) is not - as claimed - a direct action civil disobedience protest group like the suffragettes, operating transparently in the open," The Suffragettes conducted arson attacks and bombings across the UK including letter bombs to opponents like judges and government ministers. The Pankhurst's openly called themselves terrorists, they labelled their campaign as a "reign of terror". Definitely sounds like direct action civil disobedience protest and not terrorism to me. I think because the cause was undoubtedly a righteous one and the Establishments retaliation was brutal, that some people think the Suffragettes were far cuddlier than the reality. Arguably their extreme militancy was harmful to the cause of Women's Suffrage. Personally, I found it quite funny because if judged today, the government would likely proscribe the WSPU as a terrorist organisation today. | | | |

Nothing to do with judicial independence. The ruling was that the decision was lawful. Judicial review can only address, in that sort of situation, whether the decision was reached through proper processes, or was actively irrational. Otherwise it is lawful even if the court disagrees with it. The court is deciding whether it is lawful, not whether it is a good decision. Parliament is sovereign. [Post edited 15 Jun 20:07]
