We're just above Slovenia in real, per person wealth: https://tradingeconomics.com/c Mostly due to Brexit self-flagilation, the cost of servicing our 94% debt is the highest among similar countries. Ultimately we must make difficult choices. The first priority of a govt must be to defend its citizens. |
We are a rich country. The debt is crippling though.

| Starmer set to resign on Monday on 11:15 - Jun 22 by grow_our_own | "welfare reform and maintaining the 2-child cap wouldn't fly with their MPs." - dude, Russia is literally shooting at British boats in the English channel. We must assume we've lost the only thing (USA) keeping Europe from being further invaded by a brutal dictatorship to our east. Welfare reform is needed. We aren't rich enough to avoid the difficult choice between maintaining welfare at current level and defence. |
Russia has taken half a decade to advance 100km into Ukraine and has basically exhausted their economy to even do that. Britain already has the 6th-highest military spending in the world. But that's tangential to the point here. If you want to go on a big ideological crusade that cutting PIP and keeping children in poverty is necessary to fund defense, even if it puts a massive, ultimately fatal, hole in your political coalition, well, you can't turn round and say that you're making pragmatic decisions to maintain yourselves in power!

There's a decent size pie, but the quantity of mouths feeding from it makes it mid-size. Hence we're only mid-table in Europe, about level with Slovenia. "Sixth biggest" economy in the world is a fallacy. It drives oversize expectations and the Prime Minister carousel. Must prioritise productivity & the economy. [Post edited 22 Jun 12:05]

| Starmer set to resign on Monday on 10:27 - Jun 22 by grow_our_own | "No decent man appoints Peter Mandelson." - we faced dealing with a total f#cking maniac in the White House. A maniac who is heavily implicated in Epstein scandal. I think glossing over Epstein links in the appointment of a piffling foreign ambassador, one who was (for obvious reasons) not involved in the abuse of girls, and likely to strike up a "backs to the wall" kin-ship with our most powerful ally, was a minor mistake, and not worthy of the media storm it caused. "list of 'pledges' he has no intention" - Labour was unelectable. Its members would have continued to vote in anti-semite leaders who want to destroy capitalism unless someone sane stood up to them. "demonising immigrants" - agreed. And Starmer apologised for that speech shortly after. But have you seen the polls? Reform govt would be armageddon. It's not surprising panic-stations lead to the odd miss-step. That cutting off water/power comment was an off the cuff remark in one interview, and he reversed it on several occasions since. There are no good guys in Netanyahu vs Hamas. Both have been mass-murdering innocents. Starmer's govt recognised Palestine, and advocated a two state solution, which is the only way forward. Versus austerity, Brexit, bungling a covid response, and Trussonomics, Starmer's govt has been a roaring success. |
A roaring success?! It's been an absolute catastrophe on every conceivable level. Centrist dads might not be able to ever admit that they were wrong but that doesn't change the material reality. The Labour right ladies and gentleman. [Post edited 22 Jun 12:04]

People have supposedly been targetting productivity, the economy and growth for the last 20 years. Like most countries at our level of development, constant significant growth really isnt a thing anymore. Time to start accepting that there are better measures of success than growth, and that it is not likely to be the answer to all our troubles, if only we could suddenly go back to the 80s.

You criticised the suggestion that what Starmer has done eclipses what the previous government was achieving. But, as usual, that is not the position you will defend. As soon as challenged, you move to ideological assertions and complaints again. Which polices are you wanting? Top 3. Go!

"People have supposedly been targetting productivity, the economy and growth for the last 20 years" - no, successive British govts have impeded it. Through austerity and then Brexit. Most similar countries recovered much better since the financial crash. Brexit lopped a 4% chunk from our GDP every year, equivalent to the annual income of three million people. Stupid choices lead to difficult choices like defence vs welfare. [Post edited 22 Jun 12:13]

The people voted for brexit, not the government. But sure. There have been things which have damaged it. But the biggest impacts have been covid, truss, and Ukraine war. Whats the solution? Because borrowing is crippling. More of it is going to be an issue. Cutting welfare is likely to damage growth because unsupported people get ever more expensive with health/ mental health, housing, and other crisis needs.
