I do agree about the cheating but they have produced some incredible players.
Hate Maradona for 86 but love him for everything else. Best ever for me in terms of at his peak he was the most talented. Also love him USA 94, charlied up and charging up to the camera to gurn into it after scoring, just for the shear mentalness of it.

Back to the team, I’ve no particular problem with Argentina. Always strong, always good at what they do from playing sublimely to shthousery.
I don’t have a problem with any country, bar Scotland of course (only joking). It’s just football rivalry. The enemy used to be Germany, but again only from a sporting aspect in that we couldn’t beat them. As a people and a country, I like both and always feel welcome there.

Years ago a friend of mine was backpacking around the globe and spent a few months in Argentina - longer than intended. He thought it a fascinating, beautiful country and the Argentinians for the most part friendly.
Their political system, if they have one, does seem to have allowed in some pretty dreadful people over the years. It’s always the people that pay. | | | |

It's you who should be embarrassed.
Nobody who made any of those decisions is around nowadays and the awful junta that started that war were absolutely horrible to their own population as well. They kidnapped, tortured and executed more than 30,000 of their own population.
That junta was gone by 1983, why does something they did affect the current populace of Argentina? Even more pertinent, how does something they did affect how you feel about a football team given none of them were even born?
I personally don't like Argentina as a team, I feel they tend to get away with a lot of the dark arts but perhaps they are just better at it than European teams.

Hmmmm.
Rattin in '66 was sent off for dissent, by a German referee and multiple witnesses stating that he said nothing amounting to dissent. Even the referee later stated it was because "he looked at me with bad intentions". Rattin didn't speak English or German and the ref didn't speak Spanish. Rattin wanted an interpreter to discuss with the ref. If you watch the game back, the ref was awful very much favouring England with anything debatable.
Not sure about the Chile goalkeeper in 1978 - Chile weren't in the world cup, unless you mean Peru, and the defeat of Peru 6-0 was somewhat dubious but more likely down to the relationship between the Argentian and Peruvian military dictatorships rather than the players themselves.
It's funny that England fans only think of Maradona as just a cheat and his wrongdoing with the hand of god. I suggest people watch back the 1982 World CUp where he was systematically kicked out of matches. The treatment he got from opposition teams was brutal - he was fouled 23 times in one match alone. That continued through all his career, so I find it hard to blame him for trying to get any advantage back - remember that in 1986 if the match officials had been doing their job, it would not have been a goal.
Simeoni - yeah, give you that, he's not nice but Beckham was pretty stupid to give him the chance for his oscar winning collapse.

Just seen this post. Stokie has replied far more succinctly than I could. I'm talking about the Argentina football team, I thought that was clear in my OP, sorry if it wasn't. I have no beef with the country or its people. I haven’t been or met any, but a good friend has and he raves about both.
The Falklands invasion was ordered by the corrupt military junta in charge at the time. At the conclusion of the conflict, which you rightly point out cost countless lives on both sides, the junta was overthrown. I think I recall that Galtieri and his cohorts were put on trial afterwards, although I may be mistaken there. | | | |

One long-term ex of mine was Argentinian, spent a lot of time with her family and visited Argentina with them. The Falklands War is a very strange bit of history because in lots of ways Argentinians are very Anglophile. Britain was the dominant economic power in that part of the world really up until the Second World War, so English culture got deeply embedded in their middle and upper classes (hence why they play rugby union, polo even!).
My ex-'s family had lots of flattering stereotypes about the English being polite, well-mannered, respectable, smart, calm/reserved (most of which I did not conform to!) etc.
When I visited I did not get a hint of resentment about the war or for being English.
Argentinian culture has a big sense of itself as being European and there's a tendency to see themselves as a sophisticated, literary, philosophical in comparison to the rest of the continent (which is why they're easily the most disliked country amongst other Latin Americans). Food and wine are good, their versions of Italian food are a bit of an undiscovered gem (they make great gelato too).
