We better get pretty active soon 14:32 - Jul 13 with 4936 viewsitfcsuth

Season begins in under 6 weeks, the squad is currently a long way from competing in the Premier League.

Pre season has begun, pre season camp begins next week, new manager, new players needed, in the space of less than 6 weeks.

It's looking like a big task right now.

We have to hit the ground running, none of this gelling nonsense, there just isn’t time for that in the PL. So we do need people in pretty sharpish. If we were so far down the line with signings as we were lead to believe then we should see some coming in the next few days(I have my doubts). We need almost a dozen new recruits because there really aren’t many in our squad you can hang your hat on. An awful lot of work to get done and Im not convinced our recruitment team are up to it.

Not sure if you've noticed, but there is this rather large football competition currently going on!

Hardly any transfers at all at the moment.

Next week will likely see things pick up.

Not so large with only 4 teams left in it.

That's the spirit

Almost 4 weeks since MA said we're down the road with a number of signings.

Admittedly he didn't say what road. If it's the A12 then everything is a lot slower.
On a serious note, everything happens slower in world cup years.
Sadly we are further down the food chain in football terms so most others in the top leagues will get first pickings and we will have to wait or play over the odds.

We better get pretty active soon on 18:21 - Jul 13 by Zx1988

I asked ChatGPT about this, based on figures from 2010 to date.

Including loans made permanent, and excluding new contracts etc., these were the average numbers of signings made by the three promoted clubs, by 13/07, in each category of summer:

World Cup - 7
Euros - 9.75
No tournament - 12

On that basis, and having made one new signing and made two loans permanent, I'd say we're ahead of where we should be statistically for a WC summer.

As lovely as that it is, ChatGPT isn’t building a squad our squad this summer, and doesn’t know what we need to do.

We’ve added 1 player to our squad from last season, the other two were deals done last year.

Need to get active, promptly.

What’s the spirit? The fact we actually need to be up and at it ? We can’t wait until mid September like last season before the team is assembled. We won’t find another Middlesbrough faltering in the Prem whilst we spend half the season gelling.

Do people think this is football manager and you just bid for players, its done?

Apart from Spurs who seem to be massively overpaying for players, not many other teams have more than 1 or 2 signings if any.

There can be domino effects to these transfers, i.e. Player A needs to move here first so they'll sell us player B.

Most players will be getting a pre season in before we have them so it's not like they're just on a beach until the middle of August.

Yes it would be brilliant to have the whole squad by 1 July but realistically it doesn't happen. (and yes Sunderland had 6 players in by now blah blah).

We have a new manager and the players will have a clean slate with him. I'm not so sure we should be showing Akpom the door if we want to play with two up top on occasions.
O'Neil will have his own ideas and he may well have uses for some of the players that didn't fit for McKenna.
We will see.

We absolutely should be showing Akpom the door.

That's all well and good - but the evidence shows that promoted sides are generally NOT active in the transfer market at this point of a World Cup summer.

Calm down.

Just a nonsense generalist statement that’s been plugged out of ChatGPT I’m afraid.

The reality is you’d have hoped we’d been a little more active than we have been to date, especially with the big job we have ahead of us - I’m afraid to blame lack of activity on the World Cup at this point is out of the Ashton textbook of excuses.

Don’t think we will be in for any players at the World Cup. All the big clubs will be chasing the best players and prices normally inflated.

A new team was required but if we can get in a really decent centre half, centre mid, goalie and another striker that might be enough to get something against Sunderland then build from there.

The most important and urgent things were to get two strikers and a central midfielder in. We have, at least, got one of the strikers through the door well in advance of the season and that has repeatedly proven the most difficult position to fill. Time will tell whether the one we have signed is good enough and we need those other two players as a priority. However, most of the squad will benefit from the experience last time around. It will also be interesting to see how differently they are set up under O'Neil. McKenna had already started changing the approach to being more solid last season.

I agree we need more before the season starts but I also think O'Neil may well get more out of the sum of the parts than McKenna managed to last time around. O'Neil has experience at this level that McKenna didn't have.

I think that as well, it is a clean slate for some of the previous players and this is likely their only ever chance to play PL so it might bring out the best of them.

Saying this we still need a lot of players!

Chill out. There's been about 5 transfer in the Premier League. Plenty of time and soon 3/4 will arrive in quick succession.

Spurs have done more than 5 by themselves. It's not a disaster there aren't more in the door yet... but the silence is a bit concerning (we are PL now - these deals rarely appear out of nowhere with the amount of resources that are put in to reporting on the PL).

You're going to be very disappointed!

Get Sunday's final out the way and then things will pick up.

Usually this is true but i'm not sure the WC is holding up much this year - I was listening to the Athletic pod and they were discussing how unusual the amount of players moving during the tournament or as soon as they've been eliminated is this year.

Cucurella, Van Hecke, Tielemans, Anderson all prime examples.

Spurs and Chelsea are outliers.

Last summer there were 164 incoming transfers in the PL, with the majority happening in the last month of the window.

So far there have been 46 this summer (only half of which are likely to be 'starters' for the clubs - the majority of the bigger moves tend to happen later too). That's an average of just over 2. We've done 3 (yes, loans into permanent count, and did in the 164 last summer).

We'd all have preferred that we'd have concluded most of our business by now, but it doesn't generally work like that, more so in a WC year. The big domino chains haven't really started yet.

In a way it's a better summer to have a change of management than most, exactly for this reason. The manager gets a chance to have a look over the current squad before the transfer business really gets moving.

ANY business that loses it's management team and need to build a new staff in 6 weeks and make them productive are going to say it is not possible, that is what we are up against and we seem to have one bloke trying to do it all on his own.
[Post edited 13 Jul 14:56]

Why post such nonsense? What do you get out of it?
There have been so many stories about the team behind the team, the new backroom appointments, the development of the scouting network etc. and we still get this nonsense about Ashton doing it all on his own.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
