I am a bit curious as to why there is such a lack of interest in England ahead of the third-place match tonight? England has a historic World Cup gold, but no silver or bronze. Is a bronze medal not considered prestigious enough? One of my proudest moments was when Sweden took World Cup bronze in the USA in 1994. A medal is still a medal, right? Weird game some smaller nations that overachieved used to take it seriously. In 2010 it was also apparently one of the games of the tournament lol, as it was Forlan v Mueller for the golden boot and it ended up a high scoring game that both sides took seriously. | |

Jokes aside, i think it feels pointless for teams that have won it. Belgium for example celebrated their 3rd place and rightly so, as did your own sweden.
A good example was last world cup, morocco v croatia. Two teams that probably wanted 3rd place (more so morocco). But england v france, i should imagine both sets of players want to get home and dont care much for the game at hand. | | | |

The reason I feel that the interest in a third fourth playoff isn't as important or as prestigious as a bronze in the Olympics is because when you race, jump, throw, cycle, shoot or whatever in the Olympics you are taking on the creme de la creme in the final, not in the semi or a playoff of the teams/participants that failed to get through to the final.
Even those finishing runners up which I hope is Argentina they will feel not much better than those in this pointless third/fourth playoff. |
Do what they do in boxing in the Olympics and award the "bronze" jointly to the two losing semi finalists. |  |

England v Italy at Italia '90 was a cracking watch from what I remember; nothing really at stake any more, so both teams played with a bit of freedom.
Neither England or France did themselves justice in the semi-finals, so another reason to put in a performance tonight; obviously a few players will be rested, but still expecting a good match. |
