What’s wrong with Messi? He’s not a dirty player or a bad person.

He is the leader of that team. A diver. Constantly whining at the ref and using his profile to influence the officials. And then sat on the floor whilst his team mates assaulted people.

39 year old just carried a bang average team to a World Cup final. I would be trying to get people sent off if I was playing with Otamendi and Molina lol.

Yeah, that's an odd take from the op. Plenty of Argentinian players to take issue with. Messi would be well down the list.

Nah.

Him going crying to the ref when Cucurella tapped his mouth whilst talking to him makes him as bad as the rest of his team.

I think as captain he's got to take some of the flack TBH. Does he have any influence on his peers or not?

He's the captain and their iconic player.

While his teammates are physically assaulting Spanish players, he's wandering around the pitch looking sad.

He absolutely deserves the criticism.

Just lost a World Cup final in maybe his last game for his country, not sure he needs to be batman and stop his really experienced players doing silly things. Paredes is 32.

He doesn't need to be Batman, he needs to be a captain.

At least he showed some decency and went round by himself and shook hands with all of the Spanish players post match. Also kept himself away from the after match " fun and games ". Looks like the end of an era. I sometimes wonder what extra he would have achieved if he played for a team like Spain.

Classy trying to get Cucurella in trouble for talking with his hand near his mouth.
He is the Captain of thst team
It tarnished his reputation

The greatest footballer of all time, lighting up the World Cup at 39. He probably sat on the floor whilst his team mates threw punches as he didn’t want to be associated with that. If you can’t appreciate Messi and what he has bought and continues to bring to football you must have a very very high bar for entertainment.

That was the best thing he did - and it came after the ft whistle. He was a pretty much a passenger during the game itself.

He's the captain and does nothing to control his players at all. He's also fond of a fairly nasty challenge, could have realistically been sent off in the first match.

He's an incredible player of course, but he's also got a bit of a nasty streak if things aren't going well. He's far from the only player with that though.

It is possible to be an incredible footballer whilst also being a complete dick. He is both. It's possible to be in awe of someone's talent but also hate them for the way they behave.

He did. It was called Barcelona. And he achieved multiple La Liga titles, Champions League Titles and World Player of the year titles.

And playing for a team like Argentina he has achieved one World Cup winners medal and one World Cup Runners Up medal.

Which is more than the England football team has achieved in its entire history.

The original post was about Messi's physical appearance and lack of running, nothing to do with his captaincy or dodgy behaviour during the match. He had a poor game but calling him out on his looks and running stats was an odd take away from the match imo.

Of course it is. The OP must have a very high bar for behaviour then. For 2 decades Messi has had to deal with opponents kicking the 💩 out of him. Maybe at times his behaviour could be better but it could be a damn sight worse too.

He had the best career, but greatest player of all time?!

He isn't even the best Argentinian!

Absolutely astonishing that Argentina managed to turn the vibe around the world from the sympathetic "last chance for one of the greatest footballers of all time, a man admired around the world, to win a world cup" to "wow, what a bunch graceless cheats and sh**houses, I can't wait to see them cry".

Don't imagine there's a great future for their national team either. The talent coming through is pretty thin and I suspect they're not going to be refereed by their own captain in the next world cup, so they'll need different tactics.
