Season ticket holder for over 40 years to miss out because of technology 05:49 - Jul 25 with 7082 viewsGrief

Is it my cousin, a lifelong fan, not moving with the times or the football club in the wrong?
He is in his seventies, he doesn’t have a smart phone, he has never had the need for one, but my cousin is now being told that without one he cannot renew his season ticket!

So speak to the club. He doesn't miss out because of technology, but because his cousin would rather be a little bitch on a messageboard than use his understanding of technology to pick up the phone and speak to someone or send an email.

It's about time that generation made some sacrifices for once.

Ageism on 06:35 - Jul 25 by LegendofthePhoenix

This is just a part of societal ageism. My parents are now 89. They don't have smartphones. I've bought them mobile phones on 3 occasions over the past 10 years, the simplest ones I could find with big buttons, but they just can't get the hang of it. They lose the phone, lose the charger, even if they miraculously manage to get a charged phone, they can't remember how to use it and get lost in the technology of using a "menu". They just want a landline phone with numbers to press. The world just isn't catering at all for this generation.

As they've got older and less mobile , they hardly ever get out now, so they rely almost entirely on the TV for their entertainment. I've set up NOW TV for them with the sports package, but even when Town matches are live, they can't navigate through the menus to find it, unless its on a main channel - red button or a subsidiary channel just means nothing to them. I live 170 miles away, so I can't just pop round to help, and they can't retain the information for the next time. It's really depressing to speak to them and hear that they yet again had to just listen to the radio commentary, when they have the package paid for to watch it live. The world just doesn't work for them - they're an anachronism.

STFU how is ageism moving forward with technology and stating that there are exemptions available if you just contact them. Honestly pathetic.

The fact you need to bring in examples from TV etc. shows that this is not a big issue.

Exactly this.

We kept the club going but now they think they don't need us. When, inevitably, this unbelievable spell ends (and it will) they will need the core support to keep things going.

Clubs should realise that.

This is a Premier League directive, not the club.

Does this mean that we can have a credit card size bit of plastic to act as our season ticket ?

A bit like all of the last ones ?
Problem solved.

Who would have thought it ?

Technically possible. Just need the club to offer it. For me it’s easiest to have it on my watch.

I’m of the opinion that these days STHs should pay a premium over casual fans, as they get a monopoly on the best seats, (usually) sit with their families and don’t have to face the scramble that non-STHs have to go though to get the few seats that are available each match.

I understand my views are not widely held

There should always be benefits from having a season ticket, although doesn’t necessarily include a discount on match day prices.

Sitting together, with family or mates. First dibs for cup games, especially if at Wembley. Special offers on merchandise if only on things not selling well etc.

I have a similar problem to you, live over 100 miles away from elderly parents and set them up with a NOW subscription so they can watch the Town matches. My mum is better than my Dad at the tech, but the bar there is extremely low!

We also had some teething problems with watching live games on NOW to the extent that they missed Town games, which was hugely frustrating. This was only resolved when I typed out a very simple set of instructions in numbered order and sat with them whilst they worked through it. Took a couple of stabs and amendments on the way. I even laminated the instructions so they couldn't lose them!

Didn't go as far as laminating, but writing out stuff step by step was how I got my dad doing tech. He also did a computer course at their local library in his 80s.

the core support wouldnt be the core support if they didnt stick with the club regardless.

so thats a non sequitur, theyll be there regardless.

ultimately with the financial rules clubs have to follow, they must maximise profits to ensure the most money can be spent on the field, which in turn guarantees higher chances of success.

with a 30,000 crowd, if we all only spent just £10.50 per game every game per season, which is basically probably 1 pint of beer and a coke, thats nearly 6million quid in revenue the club can generate.

why would any well managed club choose to want to leave that kind of money on the table ? chasing some misty eyed version of the past that probably didnt even really exist.

This is true. However, Man U season Ticket Holders are getting similarly miffed.
Supporters in thr stadium are a bit of a pain as far as clubs are concerned. However, the atmospher drops somewhat with 30000 tourists and day trippers attending.
Gone are the days of ST holders effectively giving a club a big financial boost in the close season. It is about time that we used our representation on the board, but unfortunately the Supporters' Club is, and has been for 30 years, run by people who enjoy the profile more than the responsibility.

When I first had a season ticket if you missed two games a season there was no financial benefit in having a season ticket. Over the years it became more advantageous to be a season ticket holder.

Currently, with a waiting list for season tickets, it makes sense to reduce the financial advantage of having one.

equally though it wasnt about guaranteeing a ticket to the game as such, as there were always plenty of on the day tickets available,, simply you were committing to attend all those games, the club were able to bank the money early, and you got to sit next to your friends, and a bunch of people you generally always moaned about, so there were downsides to sitting in the same seat every game too.

its more advantageous now simply because of ticket demand though I do think the ticket pricing has got out of synch, which is something Ashton has mentioned and they are slowly correcting it.

Ultimately this is another step towards football being about customers and tourists rather than supporters. Season Ticket holders are a necessary nuisance in thr Premier League. For now. If the club falls on hard times, or (hopefully) the Premier League goes into "recession ", then suddenly Season Ticket holders will be important again. Until then our voices will be lost.

I do reflect on that. I supported the club as a season ticket holder through all the dark times, sometimes going out of a sense of duty to support them rather than wanting to. I bought shares to help the club survive back in 2002. Now they would probably prefer I did not renew my season ticket.

"Now they would probably prefer I did not renew my season ticket."

Genuine question. Why would you think this? Surely the club just want to sell whatever allocation of season tickets they choose to make available. If they wanted to prune the number of season tickets allocated, they wouldn't have released any last week.

I think it's a balancing act.

The fewer STs they sell, whilst we're in the PL, the more tickets they can sell at full price to day-trippers, or can bolt on to hospitality packages involving lunch at somewhere like Arlingtons.

If they weren't selling new STs, there'd be no need for the waiting list, which is a separate income stream in and of itself.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Yep, I'm 71, got my first mobile in 2002, screen the size of a large postage stamp :) Much prefer the modern way of doing things, only used " real money " around 10 times or so in the last 6 years. You might call me a young dinosaur rather than an old one :) I appreciate that there are some people who have a genuine problem with modern tech, largely due to various health conditions. Seems to me the easiest way forward and it would have to come from the FA itself as they're the ones making the rules, not the clubs, is to make some sort of amendment to their rules, so those who have genuine difficulties can carry out what they want to do.

Perhaps my comment was somewhat premature, but I wonder if after a few years in the Premier League it may become the case. Then again I guess they will increase season ticket prices year on year to maximise income in line with demand.

I fully expect an eye-watering increase in ST prices should we stay up.

There'll be justified anger, but it'll all blow over given that the alternative will be to not pay, and be sent to the back of a 6,000-strong waiting list.

Not a very compassionate argument, my Mum turns 80 later this year I've got a number of pretty basic mobile phones over the years and she just can't get her head round them. She's a very intelligent lady with A grades at A level who had a good job at the Bank of England, but technology is her Kryptonite.

I'd rather the club accepted all forms of income be that cash, contactless or whatever, I haven't noticed a reduction in queues at PR since it went card only and as someone who was a SumUp user ( the company used by ITFC for card payments) during my taxi driving days , when it goes down, which it does at least once a year or so, you are b@ggered.

My Mother in Law is just the same she’s 90.

She’s ok with using the telly but trying to show her Iplayer is a no no! She just doesn’t get it or doesn’t want to.

Same with my old mum. She's gone now, but it was painful trying to teach her the same thing over and over again - and hear her say 'yes dear, I can do it you know, Im not stupid', Only to find her poor old arthritic fingers had no idea where to go just an hour later. (despite her reassuring me that she new what to do and didnt need me to tell her again!) .Don't let me grow old - its not nice!

It might be too complicated but has anyone with elderly parents/friends who struggle with things like the tv etc thought about something like the Alexa Show? They could ask Alexa how to do things and either get text or video instructions.

I have thought about this for my mum who is 89 but the prospect of a disembodied voice answering her questions is terrifying for her. We have to remember that people who haven't engaged with digital over the past 40 years have, at the same time also absorbed the worst news about the internet, phishing, scams, cyber attacks etc.

Much of what drives the reluctance is fear of the unknown. After all, the interfaces are designed for children and poorly educated people to use. It's the combination of fear and over-thinking with the assumption that things are harder than they actually are that holds them back.
