I've had a beer or two in there with Warky1970, Bojk and Burer. Sitters may have been there but it was that long ago he was probably in the garden with a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps whilst the grown ups were drinking.

I had a beer with Burer in there too.

Back in the days where had a few forum meet ups.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Yeah met loads of TWTDers in pubs back then. People with different views were more civil to each other back then.

Speaking of which I introduced Metal Hacker to Mach Foreign Blue at Old Trafford the week before last. He hasn't mellowed.

Antisemites, Jew haters and crashing bores will be put on ignore.

The toilets used to be pretty grim in there tbh. The company evidently wasn't much better.

Well thank you very much...Actually in the early 1970s the all Irish public bar was quite forbidding but the rest of us with our long hair and greatcoats in the saloon were pretty lively. Only pub I've been in where I have ended up sitting next to an archaeologist who was working on, I think, what was to become the underground car park and he said 'here, look at this' and unfolded a piece of cloth containing a centuries old skull - a bit like yours but without the blond wig.

What was the deal breaker? Dubbers or the bogs?

The Vaults was right next to Mannings but slightly underground, hence the name...The Crown and Anchor was just along from Debenhams and closed down to become W H Smiths.

The Cock and Pye ?

The Bandbox ?

The Queens Head ?

Oxborrows Hotel ?

They were my era too!
Plus The General Gordon and Traceys night club - ipswich was very different then.

Strange, always seems a busy pub

ah time to remind people that busy pubs...ie with high turnover, do not always equal profitability, or even sustainability.

must have been a different pub, as Id go so far as to say even in the 90s, the area from the front door to the bar was never carpeted, and it certainly isnt now or has been for years. the little section beyond the bar with the pool table/jukebox and corridor to the toilets used to be carpet, but not the bar.

well youve got to ask who though ? aiui the pub was on a freehold lease till 2034, and so the current leaseholders have decided even on a freehold, not on tenancy with a pubco/brewery screwing them over, the numbers just dont work for them anymore.

and if it doesnt work for them, why would it be different for anyone else ?

but I havent been to the Swan & Hedgehog for nearly 2 years now, and only once to the Spread Eagle, why mention the Spread Eagle well that lease is up for sale too btw

All pubs I frequented in my youth and with memories from all of them. Bandbox was where I met my first wife (another 2 since!) and a regular haunt in the mid 70s.
Queens head was a regular hang out before entry into the Baths Hall nightclub on the opposite corner. One of my most vivid memories was the night a gang of West ham fans stayed behind after the game and got savagely attack by a mob of Town boys who left the Queens for the Baths Hall with massive intent to confront their mob. That was probably year 70. My first ever beers were in the Mulberry Tree late 60s as a young teenager

Mach bless him I still converse with him now and again.

The first time I met him was when I was with Brogan at Brentford.

He said ‘Hello Bentaz’ in some foreign tongue.

They’ve also got the Salutation, so all the live music that had been booked at the Swan will be moving to The Salutation now.

Back in the Seventies I used to know an ex. Irish Guardsman who would go into The Salutation and chat with Kevin Beattie (who drank in there for a bit of peace and quiet, it was the most unfashionable pub in town in those days.)

Takes me back to my youth with all these pub names, late 70's into the 80s.

Every Friday and Saturday night in the Swan, Cock &Pye, General Gordon, Black Horse, Halberd, Salutation, Coach & Horses, etc etc.

One that sprung up a bit later was Dukes, had some really good nights in there too.

Oh for those days again !!!

Isn’t that still the case with The Salutation? Certainly was the case when I lived in Ipswich - has it had a change of image? It was the pub equivalent of the Churchmans.

Can't really say, all I have ever done is poke my head around the door and think 'nah, not for me' - same for The Falcon. Although someone posted on here a while back about seeing a quite young Terry Butcher in thrall to a fully denimed Paul Mariner as they had a drink in The Saluation before going over the road to watch Iron Maiden at The Gaumont.

That was a great pub in its time.

Back in 2001, as a 17 year old, I met a friend in the Swan for a drink, took a bit of a shine to the barman. Married him in 2006 and we've just had our 20th wedding anniversary. The Swan holds a lot of happy memories for me from the early 2000s. It was always full back then, no matter what time of the day or what day of the week it was.

In all my years of drinking in Town, I've never set foot in The Salutation, back in the 90's it just looked like Heaven's waiting room, and I haven't ever felt the urge to give it a go, is it a bit more livey these days?

I hope the Spread Eagle carries on. As someone who drives to games from Essex my son and I don't tend to go to the pub too often before a game but that's our (my) choice if we do.

A decent pint from Grain Brewery.

The brevity of the title puts me in mind of the scene in the Tube station in Battle of Britain, where the starey-eyed old fella comes along in shock, and says "They've got the King's Head", as if Hitler himself had specifically targeted that establishment.

Our attachment to pubs, and our comfort in the form in which we're used to them is quite a powerful thing, n'est ce-pas?

Good work by Philogene...... GREAT WORK BY PHILOGENE!!!
