| What's the best pub in London? 18:15 - Oct 14 with 5099 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | I was back in town a few weeks ago and we had a few around New Bond Street and then the next day, Spitalfields after getting back to Liv Street. It appears you can never run out of finding a new/old boozer in the city. With so MANY to choose all over town, everyone must have a favorite. What's yours? | |

The Southampton just below the two NW5 pubs on my list but I miss not being within a few minutes walk of all three.

yes thats a good one I was surprised given the location how good the beer was as thats right in tourist central pub wise, but its like Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese unless you know its there, youd never find it.

been there a few times, and its nice enough, but it was CAMRAS pub of the year, and I kind of expect outstanding cask for that level, and its never impressed me that much on that mark

if youre at Liverpool St its Williams Ale and Cider House. though the Whippet is a new one around there opposite the Lord Aberconwy, just havent visited it enough yet to form a strong opinion, but it seemed quite good.

| What's the best pub in London? on 22:43 - Oct 14 with 1037 views | stonojnr | I think its almost impossible question, because there are so many pubs across such an area, even if you found what you thought was a top pub and just went there, there literally could be an even better one that youd never find that way the opposite side of london. so I try on principle, not to revisit the same pubs, and try new ones as best I can, which has its downsides. on one recent trip I did a tour of about 5 in total, and 3 of them were garbage, 1 was mediocre and only 1 had that just wish Id stayed there instead vibe. but there are always pubs Id revisit, like Euston Tap or any of the Craft beer co places. the Rake serves decent beer but it can be a bit of a pretentious crowd. there are some nice pubs along the river by Richmond/Hammersmith. Prospect of Whitby is a good pub on the river too, Mayflower Rotherhithe to name a few. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

| What's the best pub in London? on 20:25 - Oct 14 by JakeITFC | Few of us ended up in the Nell Gwynne after a quite aimless meander following the AFC Wimbledon FA Cup game (which would have been the 24/25 promotion season I think). Great pub, great jukebox. My vote is for The Lexington, Pentonville Road because I love an indie disco. |
The Lexington? Bloody yanks! ;)

Just because there is lots of choice, it's not impossible, you just have to give me your favorite pub with a London postcode, I didn't say where! I was getting nostalgic about the city after my recent weekend.

| What's the best pub in London? on 20:18 - Oct 14 by brogansnose | I used to live in Clapham Junction a lifetime ago. Last time we were in the Prem I took the opportunity to go back to my old haunts before the Crystal Palace game. The Northcote, The Falcon, Windsor Castle ( now the Junction ) all ruined by being either decked out as someones living room or trying too hard to be London pubs which they all were back in the day regardless. A few now no longer like the Craven OnThe Hill, The Invitation and the Crown plus a couple up St Johns road. Best pub in London - The Pride of Spitalfields off Brick Lane. The other pubs around there are hip with a 'distressed' feel / look. The POS is distressed without the help of an interior designer. |
Used to be SW London situated myself, big fan of the Northcote circa 2011! Jesus Christ can’t believe that’s 15 years ago, scary. [Post edited 15 Oct 1:55]

I had a flat next door to the Northcote in the late 80's. Little known fact, the landlord at the time, who was related to Seamus Heaney, had a trial for Ipswich as a youth which he passed. He got a cap playing for NI U18's , scored , went down on his knees and crossed himself. After that a loyalist group got hold of him and smashed one of his knees ending his football career. I loved the pub more before they took out the classic central bar, like the Falcon, and changed it to a long bar by the wall. When I moved to Battersea in the early 80's the place and the pub was full of 'characters' especially to a young lad from West Suffolk. I bloody loved it.

Intrigued, used to go past and it would be packed on occasion, have made my way there a couple of times (I don't live far away) and it was dead and depressing. What's the score? Summer pub the Mayflower Rotherhithe, sitting by the river on a Sunday afternoon, pint and cheese board. Old school boozer, lots, but probably Turner's Old Star in Wapping, looks like a village hall in many ways but still has that feel. Edgy : Streeties Canning Town. Best not to be too loud or wear any football colours. Different/quirky/fun The Old Ship Limehouse, Sunday night is especially good with the drag shows.

Old Mitre is a great pub. In a similar vein the Coal Hole on the Strand was a regular haunt of mine, as was the Savoy Tup around the corner. London's blessed for good pubs, centrally as well as in the burbs.
| What's the best pub in London? on 15:42 - Oct 15 with 561 views | DJR | My two favourites are pubs that no longer exist. The first was the Victoria Cross in Thornton Heath, a genuine, unpretentious local with decor that hadn't changed since the 30s. It was the Good Beer guide as late as 2010 but was subsequently converted into flats. The other was the Queen Mary which was moored on the Embankment next to Waterloo Bridge. It was a former Clyde steamer and was much less busy and more spacious and brighter than the Tattershall Castle. It is now back in Glasgow under the ownership of a charity set up to preserve it. As regards pubs within 50 yards of the the two places I worked, there are the George, Ye Olde Cock Tavern and the Cheshire Cheese on or just off Fleet Street, and the Silver Cross and the Old Shades on Whitehall. All had their charm but the latter two in particular became a bit too touristy for my liking. [Post edited 15 Oct 16:46]

Well, that is an interesting story! I was in my early mid 20s when I used to go there, 15 years ago, simpler times. Walking back up the hill towards the common, there was decent Mexican restaurant somewhere up there. Probably closed now.

I only went down to The Printer's Devil one lunchtime (used to work in Chancery Lane) but that seemed decent too. And another vote for The Mitre mentioned a couple of times earlier in the thread.

In my younger days, the Hammersmith river pub crawl was The Old City Arms, Blue Anchor, Rutland Arms, The Dove, The Old Ship and The Black Lion (or the reverse, depending on whether we wanted to finish with games of pub skittles, or pool/darts and a lock-in) This side of London, I'd go for The Bricklayers Arms in Putney, or The Churchill Arms in Notting Hill (Windsor Castle used to be our go to around there, but way too posh now) That said, mainly go to pubs for food rather than drink these days - can grab decent Thai food in The Churchill Arms, very good Indian in The Tamil Prince (Islington) or if we're going fancy good food full-stop in The Cadogan Arms or Harwood Arms (although the latter is pretty much for very special occasions)

Then we (all) seemed to move to the Drapers close by and spent many years there too. Nothings ever come close to either.
