We are definitely staying up 20:46 - Oct 18 with 3615 viewsAlpineBlue

It's not even November, so it's way too early to be so confident, but after all the results up to now, I'm already convinced.

I think we've ridden our luck, and have even looked poor for large portions of the games we have won. Nevertheless, there are a lot more than 3 teams worse than us.

Hull are running out of steam and haven't won since August. Fulham look poor, Bournemouth and Palace don't look up to much, Sunderland are atrocious and we have been better than Coventry since about November 2025.

One or two of those teams might change manager and improve, we will certainly have a bad run of defeats, but I simply cannot believe that 4 of those teams finish ahead of us. Especially when we have beaten 5 of them in the last 12 months and 3 of them already this season.

Genuinely believing that we're going to survive is going to make watching games much more enjoyable. We might lose to Forest, but it won't feel like the end of the world, and if we get a win, then one starts to ask, how high can we finish.

100%, we should be safe now, it’s just how far can we finish, top 6 may be out of reach, but top,10 finish would be nice.

But yeah, too many poor sides in this division for us to worry about relegation.

....we could end the weekend only one point clear of the bottom 3.

Anyone, outside the top 2 or 3, can beat anyone in this league.

I'll be happier and a bit more comfortable if we can start winning some games easier, rather than relying on last minute winners against teams that you've just admitted are rubbish.

You're not wrong. I still find it unthinkable that we get less points than most of those teams. I also think the Sunderland and Palace wins were with a squad that had soent barely any time on the training ground together, so we'll improve.

We rode our luck in the games we won, but we could have nicked a point yesterday, I didn't think we were far off Everton and that United game felt like a bit of a freak result because we really weren't bad.

I think we look like a mid-table team, and I think that's what we'll end up being .

We seem to have a decent chance but I'm cautious, pretty much all of these games have been knife-edge and you only need two or three in a row to go the wrong way before the whole tone & vibe changes. If we can get four points from the next two games we're very nicely placed but honestly I'd just take anything north of zero – the biggest thing right now is not to get sucked into a long run of defeats, especially with a new squad.

I think words like "poor" and "atrocious" have just lost their meaning nowadays so I'll ignore those – everyone is competitive and it's going to be one hell of a fight.

....on the face of it much better recruitment this summer.

Also an improved style of play, particularly a results based pressing style showing more intensity and desire to winning the ball back early, rather than a somewhat aimless high press that tended to result in us running around a lot chasing premier league shadows.

Oh, and a willingness to change formation when required. Who knew a team could play with 2 forwards?

As I said earlier, I think we'll stay up, but we still need to keep our feet on the ground at the moment.

The next three games could define our season. After those games we have a run of 9 games where there is only 1, perhaps 2 (depending on whether you think Tottenham will wrestle their way out of danger) relegation candidate to face - both away. The other 7 games are much like the Everton game - you probably go in hoping for but not expecting points.

5 points from the next three games is probably par. 7 or 9 points would boost my confidence from that we can to that we will stay up. Less than 4 and it starts looking sketchy again.

In GoN and the boys we trust! But don't get cocky yet.

EDIT - I will add that I believe if we had the team at the start of the season that we do now, we beat Sunderland comfortably and probably get at least a point against United.

I think we will be. We seem to be competing to a proper prem standard that can only get better. I dont think we will get much from the top sides but we will do well enough against those around us.

Last time we were told that about West Ham and Wolves. We were also told that there was no way we’d finish below Leicester.

A number of those teams will change managers and have a strong run. We are by no means safe, we’ve done incredibly well but we haven’t even got to the grinding bit of the season with injuries and such either. I’d urge caution, I am starting to worry that some our getting carried away and there’s going to be upset and frustration when reality hits…. be happy, we’re doing great but still expect to be relegated come the end, and if we do stay up, it will be amazing but to be claiming we’re not in a relegation fight and there’s at least 5 or 6 teams worse than us anyway… it’s just not true.

I've thought we would stay up from the start of the season, and I'm far more confident now than I was then, but it's far too early to say certainly we will stay up.

Things can change in this league. A few bad results and the mood could change. A few injuries in key areas could also make a big impact.

Having said that, I think by the end of November we will be in a decent position.

Yes, as good as its been so far, a long, long way to go. Not getting carried away yet. My expectation of 17th hasn't changed although I do feel more confident we can do it. That said momentum can quickly change, a key injury can hurt us etc.

Forest game is one we could easily lose as they have played well and been very unlucky in some games, they are due a win and of course Delap a goal. I fear Friday doesn't end well for us if I am honest. We've also not yet won a game in 90 mins so let's not get ahead of ourselves. The 'rubbish' teams have been there before e.g. Palace and got out of it.

If we can take 6 points off Forest, Bournemouth and Hull it would be a great return.

Love the optimism, but posts like this make me feel really uncomfortable!

We’ve had a decent start and won our three most winnable games. Looks like we’ll give it more of a fist than two years ago, but it’s mental to be saying it’s now about how high we can finish.

I'm as confident as I'll ever be at this point in the season, and i think we look well equipped to have a good season (ie 17th or higher), but i think its risky to underestimate any team in this division.

A really big plus is that we are scoring plenty of goals, and in particular that we are finishing games strongly. Both those points give us a much better chance in those fine margin games, as we have seen in our 3 wins.

It does also feel like a start of a season with a lot of teams not yet settled following manager and squad changes in the summer. Which is probably good as some of them will inevitably continue to struggle.

Next two games are key - 4 points the minimum to switch to unbridled optimism on staying up.

Forest will be tough as Glasner knows how to shut up shop and frustrate and Delap did a goal.

The third game against Spurs may coincide with their season clicking into gear. Which I expect to start at home to Coventry. Although Cov will be buoyed by their Newcastle win.

Good for you, it's better than the incessant moaning and groaning from some quarters. However, I think you're exaggerating the deficiencies of our rivals. Fulham e.g. haven't looked especially poor, if a little profligate in front of goal.

We're definitely competing this time though, which is the main thing. Obviously spending a lot of money buys you more quality :)

I've no idea if we will stay up but it's a lot more enjoyable than two years ago when we were nowhere near it.

I’m cautiously optimistic due to the goals you mention and that they’ve been spread around. And the finishing strongly, when we made changes last time out your heart sunk as it was a noticeable drop off in quality, not this season. Let’s hope we get lucky with injuries.

I think there are several teams that will be in the scrap this season (before you even consider what may happen with Man City) so that is certainly a positive. As you say, most games will be on a knife edge but we've given ourselves a nice little head start on the likes of Palace, Sunderland, Bournemouth, Forest, Fulham, Spurs.

Silly talk at this stage of the season. We’ve got a lot more about us this time around and given ourselves a much better chance, but there’s a long way to go and if th fine margins go the other way you can get into trouble quickly.

Next three games
1 Forest at home
2 Hull away
3 Bournemouth at home

The Opta 'expected' table has us currently 15th, ahead of Spurs, Newcastle, Hull, Palace and Coventry. Do I think Spurs and Newcastle will stay there? No, I don't, I think both have enough quality to get out.

Surprisingly (maybe) Sunderland and Fulham are ahead of us on that table, but then we look at what Opta are predicting and Sunderland rock bottom, so Opta obviously feels something is going to keep them down there.

I do think Forest and Hull will be very much main competitors come end of season, if there's more than 3 points between us on final day, i'm sure that whoever it is with the greater will only just survive.

For Friday, Forest have an xG of 11.5 and Opta are suggesting they're very much a top team but just haven't turned games into wins.

That concerns me slightly, as we've learned, the data does eventually converge to the median over a large enough sample, although Sunderland and Hull proved otherwise in their separate leagues last season, so we can cling on to that for a bit hopefully!

I think we have enough to beat Forest, but they're a good team and they'll be targeting us for a win, make no bones about it.

I'm fully in the camp where I too am going into game thinking we've got the tools to get results though.
