Even worse for the MAGA cult than anyone could’ve predicted so far.

Republicans getting absolutely slapped. There’s states in play now that nobody even forecast were winnable. Crazy. Trumps live tweeting is going to be quite good over the coming hours.

I’d worry if I lived in Iran right now though. He’s going to do something even more batsh*t than normal isn’t he?

As is shutting down elements of the press, suing law firms, using the state to prosecute political rivals, etc etc

Don't forget just ignoring US law, like starting a war without Congressional approval. And ignoring court rulings over and over and over again.

If they go super progressive and not centrist it won’t end well. They provided a lot of lay ups in 2024.

Agreed. In choosing their presidential candidate, Dems need to forget everything except choosing the most talented, charismatic, and qualified candidate. In recent years they've chosen based on who's background will ingratiate with the favoured swing group of the day, ignoring that person's actual ability as a politician. They need to ignore all other factors and just go with someone who'll wipe the floor with JD Vance in a debate and isn't on the verge of going senile. They need a new Obama. Personally, I like what I hear from Gavin Newsom, governor of California.

can we stop pretending it's fascism yet?

in all seriousness, despite false claims of its death, the us remains a fully functional democracy with swings and reversals and check and balances. 2024's populist is now a very unpopular lame duck.

the democrats now have a chance to make themselves likeable enough, and find a credible enough candidate, so as to turn an anti-trump wave into a broad and popular presidential campaign. assuming that they're not too split.

Have to say, I thought Trump would find a way to postpone/cancel the mid terms.

I was wrong.

"pretty fascist"? i've no idea what that means - it's entirely in the eye of the beholder. clearly ice is operating within the us legal and political system and is subject to those constraints. but if "pretty fascist' means i disagree with some of the things ice has done and the political decisions directing it, then ok i guess.

You say ICE is operating within the US legal and political system and is subject to those constraints, but that isn't really true - or at best, they're stretching the limits of that to their furthest degree.

A politicially motivated, militarised organisation, with license to use deadly force, controlled by a department other than Justice, riding rough-shod over state rights, using detention without trial and forcible removal, entirely on their own authority, is a lot closer to the Sturmabteilung than the Metropolitan Police.

Refreshing to know that the half billion dollars that Musk spent on trying to sway the voters appears to have counted for naught.

I know that a half billion is just " Back of the sofa" small change for Musk, but even so...

Newsome is another Californian. Always think he comes across a bit sleazy and not very relatable. Doesn't bring a swing state with him either.

If Jon Ossoff sticks by his word and serves a full term then I think you are looking at people like JB Prtizker, Andy Beshear, Gretchen Whitmer, Josh Shapiro. If Ossoff realises that he's the best candidate and runs, he wins.

Americans can put up with an obnoxious administration but they do vote with their wallets. Trump pinned rising prices on the Dems and promised better to get elected. So he's just been punished by the same voters that took his word on that. "It's the economy, stupid" as Bill Clinton once said. Also a lot of Trumps own supporters wanted to see less foreign intervention and he's let them down on that. Rural voters with farming interests have been burned by his messing about with tariffs.

If the Dems want to translate this massive swing (23 to 25% across the board it seems) into presidential success too, they absolutely have to find a more centrist candidate to the right of their party. Unfortunately the primary system makes this difficult just as it does on the other side. Moderate candidates get pushed out of the race at the early stages.

Be very interesting to see if MAGA dies with Trump. Hoping traditional Republicans now find the balls to stand up to him more than they have so far.

While clearly cost of living was the major factor here.

And to your point the Dems could put pressure on to end the Iran conflict as a start (albeit Trump has royally fecked up the control of the Strait of Hormuz through his folly).

A lot of republican voters have been holding their nose with Trump from the get go.

His rhetoric over the past 6 months has been horrendous - from reflecting pool bullsh!t to ‘suck it up’ protestations, to family corruption, to Nethanyahu backing, to military history fatasism.

Think a lot of republican voters have had enough of it.

Plus some of the picks he pushed were real ghouls.

Republicans need to move on from him.

That would have been quite extreme. The Supreme Court would likely not have gone along with it, on constitutional grounds (they might have a right-leaning majority, but are not slavish Trump rubber-stampers).

Particularly tricky as Congressional elections are run by the individual states, not the central Federal authority. There isn't one single switch he could attempt to turn off.

In any case, Trump doesn't rely on Congress like most Presidents, he mainly uses Executive Orders, often citing the flimsiest (and most ancient) of legal pretexts, with often only marginally applicable sources of funding. He's also far freer with the Presidential veto on legislation. Probably thinks he can bypass or thwart them sufficiently to carry on as before.

Ok, deporting people who are legally allowed to reside in the US is definitely fascist. Also, fascism is an ideology that can still exist within a democracy.

Its 2 years of jockeying for position now. Newsom definitely wants a run at it.

He's not extreme, has taken on Trump on plenty of issues in a way that cuts through and he's a handsome chap, which carries more weight with American voters than it should. The right running mate will be important.

If Vance gets the nod a half competent candidate should tear him apart on the debate stage. He's shown himself tobe career driven flopping from Anti Trump to full MAGA as soon as the VP was on offer.

No doubt Newsom will run. Still a bad candidate though imo. He is very popular with democrats in California, elsewhere he doesn't have loads of appeal. Independents don't really like him. He comes with a ton of baggage as well because he's been around for so long. California's reputation in the US isn't great. So many better candidates out there.

I do agree on Vance being a very weak candidate though, just don't think Newsom should be the guy.

I'm certainly not saying he should be the candidate, whilsy I've always had a keen interest in American politics I'm not close enough to make an informed decision as to might cone through, i think he's slick which isnnt the same as being electable You're right about California, its the Reps favourite state to call out and not always without merrit and is certainly perceived my much of America now as as a hotbed of left extremeisn be that right or not. I'd have him down as early front runner that falls away.

He funded this Republican mid term campaign with a mind boggling amount of money - $446m!!

Insane

And it failed miserably including on his main focus Texas

Essentially because just like his backing of Tommy Robinson in the UK, it was based on hate filled rhetoric and questionable candidates all underpinned by a morally bankrupt President

All because he wants carte Blanche on his Ai and data centre drive that is out of control and military contracts

It’s corruption

Part of me thinks Trump wanted the Republicans to lose badly, so he could try to convince the GOP that there was no other Republican successor to him that could deliver them a win in 2028 in a vain attempt to get them to overlook the term limit amendment and back him for his third term.

There's got to be a reason why he wouldn't adamantly claim the elections were rigged or contest any of the results when they were this detrimental.

I thought the same, and his reaction was predictably one of 'see, I wasn't on the ballot paper, if I was we would've pissed it'.

Not sure if his motive is another term, or just that he's such a self serving psycho that he can't stomach the idea of his party functioning better without him.

Yes but if you hold the senate and house you have a fair amount of legislative power in terms of what can get through. Also it really does make the admin come to the table in terms of policy in one degree or another, especially if you’re serious about winning the next presidential election.

I think Trump is about to go full loose canon and possibly do something in Iran that no one has done since 1945.

bad, illegal, unconstitutional do not amount to 'fascist'. was the uk home office's attempts to deport windrush arrivals under teressa may 'fascist'? there are alternative ways to describe something as bad rather than using 'fascist' as a catch all term for disapproval.

we've done fascism as an ideology many times on here. in general distinguishing between populist, authoritarian, and 'fascist' seems to be the problem.

Yes, a pragmatic centrist/moderate would stand a very good chance you’d imagine.

Even with what happened tonight, if they go to the progressive arm of the party in ‘28, they will never win the rustbelt or purple states in two years time.

Ossoffs speech earlier tonight was deeply impressive. I’d never heard him speak before tonight and I thought he was excellent. The epitome if what you’d want in a leader based on one ten minute inspirational speech

I don't really understand why you're arguing so strongly against this... the rhetoric against people like Obama and El Sayed, the targeting and unlawful removal of citizens based on their ethnicity, the support from groups who literally label themselves as fascist, all the other authoritarian acts mentioned by others here... (I also don't understand your last point, authoritarianism is a facet of fascism not something that's distinct).

Fascist regimes often get into power initially through democracy. Maybe in the US the democratic process has managed to fight it off before it takes hold. That doesn't mean we can't call out people with fascist intentions - even if they are unable to put their ideas fully into practice, or for that matter, openly admit to them. To say that we can't decide for ourselves if a group of people are fascist, based on the evidence provided, is... well......

As others have said, people are voting with their wallet. 1/3 of US will vote Democrat, 1/3 will vote Republican, and 1/3 can swing. You have to remember a lot of those swing voters are living pay cheque to pay cheque, Trump waxing lyrical about the stock markets means little to a lot of them. What does mean something is gas at $4 a gallon vs. the $3 they expect it to be. Food inflation, utilities, tariff impacts at a micro level. They're not massive issues for a lot of Trump's support, but they become ones for the electorate who will ultimately determine elections.
