Best fruit? 10:35 - Oct 8 with 2246 views | BrixtonBlue | For me, it has to be the lemon. It's just so versatile. I have hot water and lemon every morning (which has loads of health benefits), I use lemon juice and zest in loads of cooking recipes these days, it's a fantastic source of vitamin C which helps ward off colds, one of the most refreshing drinks is lemonade... even my shower gel has lemons in it! The only down side is it isn't really something you can eat on its own. Can anyone better the lemon in the fruit world?

As downsides go, it is a pretty damn big one, and not really supporting your claim to versatility! Oranges. Most of the benefits you mention, plus you can eat it. Or the tried and trusted apple. Sod versatility, its just a really tasty bit of fruit.

| Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me.
Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing.
Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial.
Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid.
Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

I certainly don't use orange much in cooking (or in the shower). I love the taste of an orange but the pith - urgh. And they're often a right old mess to open. I take your point about not being able to eat a lemon on its own, but I don't find that much of an issue when it goes so well with so many things. The apple is a tasty shout, but when you're looking for the BEST fruit, rather than just tastiest, the apple falls down somewhat.

Best fruit? on 10:45 - Oct 8 with 871 views | clive_baker | As boring as it is, it's very hard to beat an Apple. I'm not really a berry kind of guy, so that tends to rule out quite a lot. I love Mango, but still come back to the humble Royal Gala. If we're being technical and including Avocado & Olives etc they would certainly be up there, but they're a different category IMO.

I do like lime as it goes, but I think lemon just edges it.

Grapes. Never a disappointing flavour and full of sweet juice. Peaches/Nectarines - especially white flesh ones. Delicious. Tomatoes - versatile, different and probably my most-enjoyed fruit, what with ketchup, sauces, sliced on cheese on toast with a drop of Worcester sauce, with eggs, sun-dried, fried with bacon and courgettes......

Best fruit? on 10:56 - Oct 8 with 799 views | Oldsmoker | It has to be grapes. Squashed so that the juice runs out, and then allowed to ferment for months. Best enjoyed from bottles.

I used to love eating apples in the morning from a garden tree in Suffolk... TWTD
Best fruit? on 11:02 - Oct 8 with 784 views | Wallingford_Boy | Its a useful cooking ingredient, but thats it. Not a proper fruit as such as you can't eat it, but I agree it smells nice so must make a lovely shower gel. Mint is a better option for me though, more versatile although I am aware thats not really a fruit at all. Apple wins in the "proper fruit" category.

Yeah grapes are nice. And something you've forgotten that strengthens their case - they make wine! Never been a fans of peaches or nectarines. I like tomatoes but they don't like me, if you know what I mean!

Mint... what next? Rhubarb? You can't throw in any old herb or veg in there.

Lemon's not just useful in cooking. As I've said, loads of health benefits. Apple is pretty high in the taste category but it's not really an all-rounder. You can use it in cooking but mostly in desert. That reminds me - lemon sorbet!

Didn't really understand peoples aversion to Durian. It's a bit smelly but not that bad and it's certainly not gag-inducing. It's just not very nice either and it's insanely expensive. SB
