He does the basics ok and protects the back 4. But I don’t see a great player there. He’s like Cole Skuce. If he dictated play more like a Pirlo I’d get it.
You're probably right in what you say, he's a solid consistent ball winner who allows the players around him to play. He's strong, intercepts, breaks up play and doen't give a lot of fouls away for his position.
Essentially he lets footballers football and does it well.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
12 months ago I would have agreed completely.. but he has been in terrific form for a very impressive West Ham for most of the season. Comfortably the best holding English midfielder and commanded games and dictates tempo in a lot of those matches. Reads the game very very well.
He’s not done that in an England shirt and maybe he never will. In fact He still needs to prove last seasons form wasn’t an a one off, but he’s earnt his starting place for this tournament (in my eyes at least)

I haven’t seen a lot of West Ham last year. But it’s the commanding game and dictating tempo I was hoping to see. But he’s a million miles from doing that for England from what I’ve seen.

There are 2 types of football fan. Those that understand the importance of a holding midfielder, and those that don't.
Rice is an integral part of West Ham and England.
Screens the back 4, makes tackles, covers opposition midfield runs, doubles up.
But most importantly, he allows the attackers to push on, knowing he is covering behind them.
Clearly a position that often comes without the plaudits. Even Cantona famously labelled Dechamphes a "water carrier".
Back to the OP have not seen much preemiership footie so cant say much on Rice. I do know playing 2 holding midfielders feels a tad overly cautious. If I was only playing one, I'd pick Phillips from what I've seen of them both.
And back to your point, how awesome was Kante the other night. Just a majestic and beautiful footballer, even though he is another 'water carrier'

I think Kante is a great shout for that sort of player. He has such energy and is all over the pitch and players.

Soaks up sauce better than pasta.
Notts Forest used to have two players calls ‘Currie’ and ‘Rice’ - remember they once made a mistake between themselves and the commentator stated that they ‘made a meal out of it’..strange what little things stay in the memory.

I think he's the best we've got in that role, but I would agree I don't think he's 'world class', certainly not yet. Not sure I would fancy Rice & Phillips vs. Pogba and Kante to be honest, but as I say he's the best option we have in there for me. I thought we looked a little disjointed in the 2nd half once he went off.
