Yesterday’s loss will be a blessing 08:50 - Aug 1 with 3613 viewsEricsGate

Brings the supporter base back down to earth with a bit of a bump!

As MA said, it’s going to take time, and when things are going well, manage the highs and when we lose, don’t get too low.

All is good and will progress, bring on morecombe.

Yeah. Morecambe will be an interesting one. Last count they had 14 new players. So hoping we can get a result, settle some nerves and get a platform to build on.

Agree. You only had to look at some of the predictions on here the other day of where people think we will finish to see how many fans think we’re going to walk this league. Patience is going to be required from all.

I’m just happy that we now have a chance to progress and that we finally gave a structure in place that gives the club a chance of progressing over the coming years.

Are you referring to this thread* where you can win Ipswich vouchers to the value of a standard shirt?

No entry fee either, surprised more people haven't entered yet.

1-24 Predictions competition by tractordownsouth 28 Jul 2021 15:21
I posted a thread the other day for posters to predict the League One table but have decided to make it into a competition. Here are the rules:

Each poster must predict the table 1-24. At the end of the season you will score points based on how far away you were from each team's league finish.

For example if you were to predict Town to finish 2nd and we finish 2nd then you would score 0 points. If we finish bottom of the league you would get 22 points.

Your scores for every team in the league are then added up. The aim is to finish on as few points as possible. In the unlikely event that more than one entrant is tied for points, the winner will be decided by who has the highest number of teams predicted in exactly the right place in the table.

There won't be any late counting of results this year as Kropotkin and his friend Google Spreadsheets have kindly offered to assist. No entry fees but there may be a prize on offer. Entries can be posted and edited up until 3pm on 7th August (Town's first game) if Phil would be so kind as to sticky it. Good luck!

100% agree. Yesterday's loss will be blessing, but not to supporters. We are a big club and have finally woken up to this, after years of having the wool pulled over our eyes. I'm all for high expectations and wanting to win every match !

Hopefully yesterday's result will...

1. Encourage PC and his team to look at set pieces, as we have defended them poorly so far in preseason.
2. Show PC that he needs another, experienced CB to go alongside Edmondson. Nsiala is walking liability and Woolfenden sometimes doesn't do the nasty, simple stuff required in League One.
3. Hopefully result in left back, 10 and a versatile winger who can play on both sides coming through the door next week.

Ashton and the club have done a great job in giving PC exactly what he wanted and needs for this upcoming season. Everything falls on his shoulders now.

I get the feeling Millwall's performance even shocked their manager. That kind of freak performance will happen against us 2/3 times during the season. Take it and move on. We have played some decent sides pre-season, that will have us ready for next Saturday.

I can't say I know anything about our signings (apart from Pigott), but I trust our managers judgement. It may take a number of weeks to find a decent formula, but I'm sure we will. Looking forward to it.

Irrespective of the Millwall game we should be looking to comfortably beat Morecambe

i'm glad it happened, some people (that should know better) are really making themselves look fcking stupid with the things they are saying (in jest) but other fans, of other clubs, dont know they are joking.

millwall are a solid championship squad, never spending a million quid on a player, yet the journey they have given their fans over the last 15/20 years far exceeds what we have done. cup finals, promotions, playoff challenging....

We’ll be good again... one day

We are Ipswich Town, in the third tier.

With (apparently) one of the best managers in the league

With (apparently) one of the biggest budgets in the league.

If we are not aiming to win this division as fans and a club then we might as well all pack up and give up on ITFC.

Have some ambition.

We are aiming. But as with the previous seasons, you don't win the league in the first two months... Else we'd be promoted already.

A slower start, which is to be expected for the reasons above, isn't something to get worked up about.

The under rating of Nsiala contnues.

This 'error prone walking liability' was our best defender last year by a mile. And the glaring "errors" amounted to 3 or 4. No more than any other defender.

Essentially, I think people remember his first game or two when he had an icnredibly harsh red card, and then equate big powerful black guy to clumsy. Which is stupid.

I’m ambitious, I’m also realistic.

You really think we’ve got a good chance of winning the league?

I think most are hoping for play offs, which will be a good season.

If all we are hoping for is playoffs in League One then we might as well have kept Evans and probably Lambert too.

Maybe. But we’ve been a team that’s played without any real confidence or momentum for over 3 years – so it’ll only be a useful reality check if we build on it in the league.

Personally, I’m going to give Cook and the new team 3 months to see what they’re really made of.

The real work starts next weekend and that's where the judgement should start, not based on pre season results. You could win all your pre season games, that will not guarantee you're going to have a wonderful season.

We all know that our new signings are very decent for this level and our manager has a proven record at L1 and 2 with a number of clubs, patience and trust will be the key. Personally, I'm very optimistic for our club, but I'm going to keep a lid on it and see what unfolds over the next few months.

Expectations and reality are difficult concepts to marry up in ones thinking. It’s a bit of a mental exercise to carry them both as the season gets underway.

Expectations: we’ve signed almost a league 1 all stars side with more to come. That’s a fact. Should be aiming for automatic promotion without a doubt.

Reality: making a football team play well together often takes time, history shows us this. That is also a fact.

We all have to try very hard to allow these two abstract ideas to exist simultaneously in our minds - or we will go mad.

Poll: Was it a punch?

Could well be that reality check Cook spoke of.

Hearing things like 'Chequebook FC', 'HMS P*ss The League', '100 points 100 goals', 'Champions by Christmas' is nothing short of embarrassing.

I do worry that some fans have a mindset now that we should be cruising through teams every single week, and the first sniff of trouble and toys will be thrown out the pram.

We've bought very good individuals, but I don't think a very good team will be moulded instantly, it isn't going to happen - it will take time.

Wilson was arguably our best defender last year but not the ball playing defender that PC wants (the stats bear this out).
Nsiala made several 'glaring errors' throughout the season - far more than 3 or 4 and whilst he made some good blocks he always seemed like a bit of a liability waiting to happen.
The fact that you bring race into it is absolutely pathetic - I have not seen or heard any fans single him out because of the colour of his skin and your comment is frankly ridiculous.
I sincerely hope he has a good season and that PC can help to develop him as a player...

Its not "pathetic" at all. There is a stereotype which I suspect is at play for some here.

It was only a couple of days ago Cook was lauding the significance of equalising against Colchester on the basis that winning (or not losing) games is habitual, and people on here running with that narrative. Now a defeat is healthy because it keeps us grounded, which somewhat contradicts that.

There’s certainly an element of saying the right things that people want to here to be honest, which is fair enough, but I don’t think anyone should read too much into Cook’s comments or indeed pre season results generally. Friendly results mean absolutely nothing, they’re glorified training sessions. It wasn’t long ago people were brimming at watching Downes, Dozzell and Nydam popping the ball around West Ham, and look how that turned out.

The real business starts Saturday, bring it on.
