Can we please put manager doubts out of the picture now? 23:00 - Nov 2 with 3437 viewsitfcsuth

We have a very good manager. A top L1 manager.

Trust him, back him. Still just 16 games with this squad.

We will be just fine with Paul Cook.

Definitely, but only until the next loss when there will be a complete meltdown by some.

It's still up to Paul Cook to put those doubts out of the picture, not the fans. Though tonight was a good shove in the right direction.

To be honest, Cook could’ve won all his games in charge of us and they’d still be some that wouldn’t be happy.

No, not with fans like you who gave Cook two games to save his job not so long ago. Then I believe he had three come the end of October. Or something like that. Don’t you feel a tad silly now, joe? #potnoodlebrigade

To be fair Cook did what he needed to do.

There were points where 2-3 more losses would have lead to big questions.

This polarisation is tedious.

Cook had a poor start, and is now getting the kind of results we would expect.

Let's just enjoy the wins when we get them, and hope the form continues.

Nonsense. When posters are so vociferous, so narrow minded with their views, they need to suck it up when we get results like tonight. It’s not tedious, far from it. I’d have more respect for some people if they put their hands up once in a while and said, ‘dya know what, I might be wrong
about this Cook chap’.

No Joe, no

We have stop this

Cook is an excellent manager who needs time., Plymouth was not the clusterf@ck Cook performance that so many make it… it was a player error issue in defence and attack

Ashton and Cook asked for patience, 20% of this board have not given it

There is a spirit, momentum, energy but more importantly for Cook a system of play emerging

Wycombe are tough, that was a strong side - but they could not handle our switch of play, midfield solidity, movement and width, AND our doggedness in defence

This is a project, it is obvious that is has been slowly improving

Let’s get behind it

off topic, but im in love with the attacking intent we have, and what we look to do in games.
some of the off ball running/work is fantastic to watch. sht like that cant be taught in a few weeks, and there wasnt a hope in hell he could have got last seasons no hopes to implement this style.

So true… some of the movement of Celina, edwards and bonne was outstanding second half… it’s just a joy to watch.

The system was always going to take time… it’s not as rigid as some are making out…

Their are overlaps, overloads, switches of position

Evans was perhaps an unsung hero tonight he got stuck in but the switches of play he was orchestrating, Wycombe couldn’t cope

More of the same please

You have to look beyond the 16 games we’ve played this year. Like you say, this is a long term project, and we have an excellent man in the seat to lead this squad.

A slow start, but are going in the right direction now. Still incredibly 30 games to play this season.

Just to illustrate how we have begun to settle and gel as Cook said it would.

So season so far - P15 W5 D5 L5 - 20 points

Last 6 - W3 D1 L2 - 10 points

People referencing last season seems a little misguided as it’s quite clear that the majority of the legacy squad has just not performed at other clubs bar Wilson (was he not injured?), Downes (who really didn’t want to be here)… who else? Edwards was seen as one of our best attacking players can’t get a game.

Also we have to stop this silliness that this is a easy League and we have a god given right to ‘walk the league’, I feel the standard has increased significantly since lamberts hapless attempts. Take Fleetwood, mock them, but they are good and took a point and scored 3 against form Wigan, Rotherham are rocking, Wigan have invested and are flying.

Take Plymouth, extremely well coached, in great form, and have our player of the season, and increasing crowds.

But let’s judge Cook and the teams progress via some clear measures

1. Have more energy, confidence and desire than the opposition

This for me has been a key factor in our earlier poor season form and part of our recent improvement. Marcus Stewart made so many observations about this yesterday, just more energy and pressing across the team. More belief. More confidence. BUT as Edmundson pointed out overall Plymouth had greater desire and won more battles overall. We have to keep improving in this area, none more so than on Tuesday at Wycombe. I feel this measure has a lot to do with the players but also Cook needs to set the mind set. I know they have been using a psychologist at the club

2. Have the better players on the pitch and on the bench

This should be one of our key strengths and a big reason people think we should be top two, but it’s only one of the measures. I thought that we were beginning to reap the rewards of this and beginning to settle on our best team with Aluko and Chaplin now settling. BUT I’m going to give Cook a green card here - the late illness for Burns and Donacien made a huge difference, it so weakened one side which they exploited, and I think Burns would have been a critical threat. But more importantly to the reason the season has faltered is INDIVIDUAL ERRORS! It is the number one reason we are not top six without a doubt. And it’s howlers, game management and silly fouls in dangerous areas. IT HAS TO STOP. I think Cook has to keep drilling it into them, BUT players like Penney need to step up, sort themselves out or be dropped. That was more than a ‘leg up’ for Plymouth it was a ribbon bowed gift

3. Have the better tactical and technical set-up and system of play

This is Cooks wheel house, this is where he is culpable. Is he failing, in part yes and in part no. The defence has hugely improved, the number 10 and midfield width has been clicking. If you’d asked me after Bolton I’d say Cook was failing miserably on this measure. There have been signs of the system gelling and settling. Somewhat ruined yesterday - when we came up against a very good tactical manager at Plymouth. Where Cook perhaps messed up was his selection into the system yesterday… I think he felt Coulson would protect the wolf better… but perhaps celinas energy would have been better from the start

In summary massive question marks remain on Cook, but players are also culpable, illness may have impacted more than people are giving credit. Player energy has to improve further.

Thank you, I welcome any queries?!

Agreed .

We are seeing the quality of play and great goals that we haven't seen for years .

There is a team spirit developing that again hasn't been there for a long time .

I love the passion and obvious love of football from the manager .....we're on the way to better things , last night's performance was superb .

I will do what I want thank you, yesterday was superb, the Pompey game was very good and there are clear signs we are moving in the right direction.

But I'm not going to laud Cook as the answer until we get at least close to where we need to be - I'll be sticking with my view that the next few games vs the top sides will tell us where we are - and until they play out I won't get too high with the highs or too low with the lows.

If we can play like we did last night every week then brilliant and Cook will earn the time he will get - if standards fall back down and it continues as two steps forward and one back then he'll get less time.

Everyone on here wants Cook to succeed, even if it is only because they don't like him but don't want another season in this league - but last night has to be the continuation of something, not the high point - Cook's view on things always seems more simialr to those who are deemed as 'Cook outers' who in most cases are just 'Cook needs to do betters'

That last point is spot on. Those who seem to be taking flak today have mostly echoed the manager's own appraisal of his and the team's performance.
