Novotel injunction rejected on 20:24 - Nov 11 with 6970 views | Swansea_Blue | I pity the people who end up there, targeted by rancid racists. According to the Chief Inspector of Borders and Immigration this week, David Neil, the Home Office are only approving applications at a rate of 1.3 per week. Given there’s an 80%+ acceptance rate of claims, that must mean they’re only making decisions on about 1.5 cases a week. Ridiculous if that’s true. We need a massive improvement in the system to improve the asylum assessment times to stop the financial waste of holding people for months, and more importantly to let the vast majority whose claims are successful to start to rebuild their lives.

Ha! There is that. I’d swallow my pride though and try to make things work. But I suppose there’s only so much they can do within the bounds of the direction from above. All a sad mess and stain on our reputation really.

I can't just give you an uppie. I have to proclaim my agreement. Our govt are absolute scum, playing to the lowest racists. With such a high percentage of asylum acceptance - and you can bet we are trying to find ways to say no - it is an utter disgrace that so many thousands are in limbo. It is having a huge impact on Ipswich, at a local level - the failure of govt to process cases in a legal and humane way. See other threads about high cost of hotels, at least in part due to the Novotel having to close.

Absolutely correct. There will be a minority who are horrible scum, and I would prefer don’t live in this country. But I feel the same when I see the minority of white England football “fans” who are also horrible scum. Every race, walk of life, colour, sexuality, blah blah has that minority.

Out of interest- Are the asylum seekers kept within the grounds of the hotel? Like the one in Kent they were in? How many other towns have been selected before Ipswich? £7mil a week- is a fair few hotels.

Loads of towns before Ipswich. This is nothing new despite the ramping up of right wing media attacks against asylum seekers this week. It’s supposed to be a contingency overflow measure, but has become more common as the delays in processing claims have increased in recent years. https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-8990/CBP-8990.pdf

It's tory party policy. 80% + are genuine refugees and are eventually admitted and become productive taxpaying upstanding citizens. The UK admits a tiny fraction of what the EU are doing. Time we stopped pussy-footing around these racists who cost our economy billions.

I pity the poor members of staff who have been sacked in order to house them…they have bills etc to pay unlike the new residents but of course invariably the accommodation won’t be up to scratch for them…

Seven years ago spent a weekend at a hotel in Folkestone which was over run by Somali asylum seekers, walk down corridor and they would be sitting around blocking the way. At least, now, they seem to take the hotel over. Novotel isn’t the only one locally, the Hotel on Old London Road, Copdock is also used.

Yep, agreed that it’s not at all fair on any who lose their jobs. They should be compensated in some way by the government as it’s the government’s failures to have an efficient process that’s largely the cause of their scrabbling around to find hotels. Everyone should be angry at them for wasting public money (again), not at the asylum seekers. [Post edited 12 Nov 2022 10:13]
