Why would I be, it's absolutely one we need to go and get 3 points from

Must win tonight..... on 08:21 - Feb 14 with 2888 views | RobTheMonk | We need to go on a bit of a run don't we? This season has potential to be a 'what could have been' one, where we rue the extra time goals that we've conceded in numerous games. I'm hoping we go on a crazy good run of form and finish top 2.

I think we've gotten ourselves on the wrong side of too many margins for the top 2 to happen now - some our own fault (missing pens, conceding weak goals), some not our own fault (bad refereeing, bad luck), some just ridiculous like the fog, but it all adds up to us not being there. If we get ourselves on the right side of everything between now and May we have a chance - but seems unlikely to switch things up that much from where we are when we are basically the better side every game but contrive to draw every 3rd game

Chaplin has missed a few now - is it time to change penalty takers? I thought Davis might be decent. Not sure if this is accurate but it says he's missed 56% of the penalties he's taken in his career. https://www.transfermarkt.com/conor-chaplin/elfmetertore/spieler/349503 SB

I keep reminding myself that we're pretty much going to finish top 6 unless we have a cataclysmic implosion. Top 6 is progress over last year. Everything else has arguably improved. Sheffield Wednesday were always going to be around top 2 and Plymouth have had a bit if an anomaly season in a good way for them. As you say, we've been on the wrong side of too many margins for various reasons.

That is as accurate as anything I can find - and both his Morecambe penalty and the Sheff Weds ones were poor penalties as well. It seems strange in this ultra prepared squad that we don't have it worked out who our best penalty takers are and just seem to let players decide on the pitch (as happened in FA Cup v Rotherham and on Saturday) Lee Evans took an excellent penalty, but is obviously not fit at the moment - George Hirst wanted it he scored 1 for Pompey last year and missed one for Blackburn this year but has a good record for Leicester U21s and England youth (overall scored 9 missed 2)

The way Broadhead hit the free kick on Saturday made me think he could possibly take them?

Just an ipswich curse isn't it. Didn't Fraser score every penalty the season before he joined. Took 1 for town, missed.

Has to be Broadhead, surely? Clearly the best striker of a ball and has a rocket of a shot.

Venus' record wasn't particularly good - he missed 4 out of 10 for us.

He's never taken a professional one but is 4 out of 4 in ones he has taken Everton U21s x2 Wales U19s x1 (vs England) Wales U21s x1 And like you say he looks the most natural finisher and ball striker we have so makes sense [Post edited 14 Feb 2023 8:58]

Fraser certainly scored a lot of penalties the season before he joined us. Thanks for reminding me of a penalty far worse than Saturday's feeble effort.

It may be that Chaplin - consciously or otherwise (perhaps even for some sort of bonus) - is chasing down a goals total for the season, therefore wants to take penalties when that's not his best suit. Or simply the confidence of a top scorer in form.

Must win tonight..... on 09:01 - Feb 14 with 2371 views | oldbeardy | yep - and then the next couple as well. Then maybe we can begin to believe that top 2 isn't a dream (though still unlikely). What will really pizz me off is if there's a repeat of the first half against Cambridge.

Yep - was 9/9 for MK the season before and 10/10 for career until he steps up for us and missed We've missed half of the 16 penalties we've had since we returned to League One (league only) and without remembering them all exactly one was in a 5-0 win v Bolton, one was the 4th in a 4-0 win v Gillingham, one was a 3-0 win v Shrewsbury so we've missed an even bigger percentage of 'pressure penalties' at the game state

The majority of goals could be regarded as instinctive, stick s foot out or see a chance and take it. To be a good penalty taker you need to add the mental strength of a John Wark.

The frustrating thing is in reality the margins between where we are now and being top are so fine but as you say we've just been on the wrong side of them a few too many times. I know every team can look through their results and find ones they should have done better in but we've lost the same amount of games as Plymouth but have drawn 4 where they have won 4. You can go through our games and find at least 4 draws where we absolutely should have won. Not because we're Ipswich and they're whoever but because we did far more than enough to win but shot ourselves in the foot with poor defending, poor finishing, getting done by a dodgy goal etc. Before I get accused of making excuses, I'm not, we obviously haven't done enough to make sure we're on the right side of those things and it's added up, in my view, that we now don't have the belief that we can get wins over the line in circumstances where we've dropped points in the past. Top 2 is still on but we basically have to get our early season form back immediately plus find a couple of extra points or so from somewhere. I think we'll improve from where we've been but not enough to do it and just hope that it isn't too much of a psychological blow to the players that they flunk the playoffs.

Well yes of course on 09:05 - Feb 14 with 2338 views | Dyland | The Owls game was the 'last must win' for a chance of top two though. How long do we go on saying must win? Of course, the problem has been dropping points against gnarly opposition, plus some bad luck against Pilgrims and Owls. But really, it's the inability to see the poorer teams (re league position) off that has seen us stumble. I'm calmer now that there's very little chance of top two and we should look to ensure we at least cement place in playoffs. (Secretly I still think we can make top two cos I'm a divvy fan but don't tell anyone, least of all me) COYFBFFS

Must win tonight..... on 09:15 - Feb 14 with 2271 views | SomethingBlue | Yep, needs to be a win, on paper the toughest of the coming five and if we do what's necessary you never know — Saturday should take care of itself and then we'll be wondering again ... Suspect Rovers will be a notch more hyped up than for last few games and in Collins/Coburn/Sinclair it's a very dangerous attack if one or more of them show up ... but we really have to deliver now.

Must win tonight..... on 09:18 - Feb 14 with 2218 views | RegencyBlue | The next five are must win games for me, given they are all against teams in the bottom half of the League. I think we have blown top two but need to try and keep in touch in case there is a slip up by Wednesday or Plymouth whilst at the same time keeping Derby and Bolton at bay. You just know how it’s going to go though don’t you? Rovers are on a terrible run, have lost their last five, then along come Ipswich!
