Must win tonight..... on 08:25 - Feb 14 by itfcjoe | I think we've gotten ourselves on the wrong side of too many margins for the top 2 to happen now - some our own fault (missing pens, conceding weak goals), some not our own fault (bad refereeing, bad luck), some just ridiculous like the fog, but it all adds up to us not being there. If we get ourselves on the right side of everything between now and May we have a chance - but seems unlikely to switch things up that much from where we are when we are basically the better side every game but contrive to draw every 3rd game |
Bang on. The time is nigh. What I don’t want to see tonight is a lot of rotation. We play our best side week in week out until May now.

Completely agree we’ve got ourselves on the wrong side of too many margins Also agree whilst a few have been bad luck and fog, ultimately it’s of our own making.. not turning up at Wycombe, Cambridge, letting Charlton lead slip. That’s 8 points right there. I think automatics have probably gone - last chance saloon tonight, but if we did win we open up a series of winnable games 5 in fact - Forest Green, MK Dons*, Burton, Accrington. Have we got the character and steel to get on the right side of the margins? I think if we can’t get Luongo fit and Chaplin consistent maybe not. But we have shown remarkable resilience in some games to come back… e.g. Saturday My main hope is that we use the rest of the season to build that winning mentality and steel - head into the play-offs with some wins at Bolton or Barnsley in the locker. Go into the play-offs rocking. That would be good. * I do wonder if we did get a string of wins.. and arrived at MK Dons and won in front of the away fans whether that could be season defining… making up for Charlton, building long term bonds with fans, getting huge momentum

That's just not going to happen, unfortunately. The attritional style is clearly not suited to keeping the same XI. It's likely put paid to Broadhead playing 2 games in a week too. As much as I'd like a settled side playing with rhythm, we are where we are unfortunately.

Must win tonight..... on 09:03 - Feb 14 by Pinewoodblue | The majority of goals could be regarded as instinctive, stick s foot out or see a chance and take it. To be a good penalty taker you need to add the mental strength of a John Wark. |
Absolutely. Striking a moving ball well (in a dynamic situation on instinct rather than lengthy deliberation) is a totally different kettle of fish from striking a static ball well after a pause, or at least I always found it so. As you say Chaplin hits a half chance or a snapshot beautifully often with little backswing, but a penalty is all about isolating your thoughts from the game situation.

Think someone mentioned this in an earlier thread, never trust a left footed player to take a pen. Also looking at the players that McKenna and Ashton have signed, we have picked up some very good players. But on the other hand we have also picked up some very bad ones and also players that are injury prone. Think someone has a spell on Ipswich at the moment.

Must win tonight..... on 08:33 - Feb 14 by RobTheMonk | I keep reminding myself that we're pretty much going to finish top 6 unless we have a cataclysmic implosion. Top 6 is progress over last year. Everything else has arguably improved. Sheffield Wednesday were always going to be around top 2 and Plymouth have had a bit if an anomaly season in a good way for them. As you say, we've been on the wrong side of too many margins for various reasons. |
We are having a cataclysmic implosion.

Must win tonight..... on 10:31 - Feb 14 with 1059 views | itfcsuth | You'd have to think the next 5 are absolute must wins, no points dropped. Outlook, confidence and momentum could look very different then if that were the case - whether that be closing the gap, or really solidifying our position at 3rd. Will leave us in a healthy position heading in to the final stretch with some form. Walton Donacien - Woolf - Burgess Burns - Morsy - Humphreys - Davis Chaplin - Harness Ladapo [Post edited 14 Feb 2023 13:14]

You're not playing Clarke or Broadhead? Any reason why? The implication would be that you feel we have wasted 2.5m in the January transfer window. SB [Post edited 14 Feb 2023 10:37]

Must win tonight..... on 08:56 - Feb 14 by FrimleyBlue | Just an ipswich curse isn't it. Didn't Fraser score every penalty the season before he joined. Took 1 for town, missed. |
I think it's too simplistic to say we have been bottle jobs basically since 2002, we have the double whammy since 2010 or whatever it was of Evans provoking a fackin curse, the twonk.

Ah OK - I did read that but had forgotten. Still don't think Harness should be in there, he's not done enough to deserve the start whereas lately I feel that Edwards has - I would start him there. SB

Fully fit I'd start Boradhead, but he was tiring v Sheff Wed, and cramp did catch him before he went off, so would utilise the squad in that case. In regards to Clarke, I think he has done OK, set his standards high v Morecambe with a really good display but hasn't followed that up - I personally still think Donacien is the better option in that role, knows it inside out, has a really strong relationship with Burns and still think Clarke is adjusting. Not been impressed by Hirst at all. £2.5M is a significant chunk of money, but do think Broadhead and Clarke will develop into the group over time, just an adjustment period for them still.
Must win tonight..... on 11:33 - Feb 14 with 877 views | Vic | If we can start winning consistently other results will sometimes go our way. That's all we need. Us win and weds/ply draw three times and it's all bunched up again. But you're right - we really do need to win games like this, and go on the fabled run of wins. If we can do that then everything is still possible. Trouble is we've not had a WWWWW .... run for a long, long, long time (and something Weds and Plym have both done a few times.)

Must win tonight..... on 12:37 - Feb 14 with 700 views | OldFart71 | Sadly there does come a time when all the excuses in the World won't get us over the line. Players need to prove they are what we think they are and that is one of the best set of players in this league. But along with ability they need application and a bit of what many teams do against us such as waste time, put the ball over the stand, put themselves about a bit by not being bullied off the ball and take chances whilst not making silly errors. We really are at a point where drawing of heaven forbid defeat against those scrapping at the bottom won't do.
Must win tonight..... on 12:45 - Feb 14 with 663 views | J2BLUE | I hope we don’t go back to trying to walk the ball into the goal. We have at least 4 players with a decent long range shot on them (Broadhead, David, Chaplin and Clarke) so let’s mix it up a bit. [Post edited 14 Feb 2023 12:45]
