That’s why I detest VAR. It doesn’t do anything for the game other than maybe protect the big clubs. Had the decision been the other end, I’ve no doubt the goal would have stood.

It's meant to be for a clear and obvious error. If He's an inch offside, that's not an obvious error. In real time it would count as being level. A major downside of going up this season would be having to deal with that sort of nonsense.

Don't know what the answer is though. The margin between offside and not offside is always going to be infinitesimally small, regardless of where you draw the line. And if you get rid of any video input, then there will be awful decisions that are much more wrong than this one, with no ability to overturn it even though millions at home can see that it's obviously wrong.

Is it clear cut? Is the pass a millionth of a second of contact of foot with the ball, or is it several milliseconds meaning the “snapshot” is really a moving target?

If the VAR requires a line drawn to judge a decision as offside then it clearly isn’t a clear and obvious error on the side of the linesman. Ridiculous.

It's boll*cks isn't it! If they're going to use VAR to check offsides it's should have a tolerance for error involved like DRS for lbw. How do they know it's precisely when the ball was played that his toenail was offside?

No it wasn’t.

And cricket is by nature a stop/start sport. If there is any margin of error, the decision stays with the Umpire’s on field call. If anything that ridiculous get out of jail call for Man U (surprise surprise) would under cricket’s rule stayed a goal, given it was so marginal.

It looked incredibly tight to me. I couldn’t tell from the snapshot they showed that he was offside. They seem confident with the decision, but I wonder if it would be the same result if you really closely analysed the images (assuming the frame rate allows you to spot the exact point of the pass being made).
