Manipulative, bullying, disrespectful, just horrible.

HR?

Worried they won’t keep it confidential.

When he's not expecting it quietly walk up behind him. Then reach in and grab a tight hold of the elastic in his pants and yank upwards as hard as you can.
Then scream really loudly Weeedddddgiiiiiee

If that doesn't put some manners on him nothing will

Unfortunately it’s a part time job itself.

Keep everything recorded - if something happens verbally email them with what they said quoted accurately as if it’s a work email

Dear Boss

You asked me to do XYZ you said “this that the other”

Thanks

Wonnor

You’ll either gather evidence of wrongdoing or find it stops sharpish. Also, if HR break confidentiality you can complain and pursue it further. Make sure you are in a union, use them and take their advice.

Also check out ACAS, citizens advice etc and use their websites to come to a workable solution where you can. Good luck with it.

Company policies should give you guidance on what actions you can take too.

Edit: And I echo Mullet's "join a union" if that's a possibility.

I would suggest this somewhat bad advice.

There are bullies all over the place. Use the advice above, so you can learn how to deal with a bully.
You may or may not get supported internally, but you learn how to start dealing with it.

I helped a colleague through such a process. You will be better for dealing with it. And getting some form of resolution.

Then, you choose, whether to stay in your current role or organisation.

Last resort & for revenge, there's always the old "hidden prawn" trick.

Bad smell for bad person very appropriate, and if he wastes some of his time looking for it instead of having a go at you/others - result. Shared sniggers at the water-cooler = bonus.

Hope he doesn't read this forum!

Or the old rummage and rim rub. I did that and worse to a really annoying bloke when I first started work. He must have got through an awful lot of my DNA.

My mate knocked his boss out in a pub and stamped on his head. That might do it. He wasn’t sacked either. Actually, baaaad idea.

On a serious note, plenty of good advice on here. Certainly keep a written record of everything that happens and joining a union or any representation if it exists is a good idea. Facing the person down one to one is a possible. It’s amazing how often bullies back down if you do that.

But whatever you do, don’t lose your temper. If they lose theirs, even better. If they are rude, brilliant. Record it, but don’t play verbal tennis. A card in your hand is one not in theirs. There’s actually ways of controlling how people respond without them knowing you are doing it.

If that’s not possible, gather evidence and approach HR. What’s to lose? If the person is out to do you they’ll do it anyway.

Lastly, nobody should put up with being bullied or made to feel bad in the workplace. It’s bad in every way, including actually the business.

Ultimately, they cannot kill you. So if your options are limited, plan your way out. Get that cv together, think about what you are good at, your skills, what you have to offer and want to do. Write it down. You will feel better about things, more in control, even if it comes to nothing. Life is far too short to put up with dysfunctional behaviour.

lots of good advice here, do other colleagues (who you trust) have examples you could use to go to management/hr?

we got rid of a similar person, the more evidence (and support) you can gather, the better. another vote for unions if you can, they give excellent advice and support

Indeed, don't allow yourself to be bullied - stand up for yourself, while being reasonable, but important to write down times & dates of anything untoward that's said. And if you have a boss who keeps giving you vague instructions or you don't understand what actions are required by you, send a polite email to your boss afterwards, saying "just confirming that I will now be doing XXX".

Of course there are plenty of petty, purile ideas for getting back at an unreasonable boss on the internet.

1. Use a Turkey blaster or some form of syringe to inject fish sauce into the seat of her/his chair. A little more subtle than sellotaping prawns to the underside of it and a more difficult challenge for the rotter to solve.
2. Post a made up copy of his/her CV on as many recruitment websites as possible.
3. Get thirty sets of cut keys labelled with the person's phone number. Hide them, drop them in car parks, parks, shops, doctor's offices etc. The better you hide them, the longer people will be calling them because they found the keys.
4. Sign em up for free stuff. Lots of it. Bung in a few porn sites too. But not using work computers or phones.
5. One I read was if the person has an allergy to say cats and you own one, make sure you give Tiddles a good cuddle before work. That should get the swine sneezing all day.

First rule: don’t get caught and second actually avoid anything illegal is a good plan. They’re not worth a criminal record.

Second thoughts, stick to the good advice on TWTD, not this!😃

Have you tried saying to him ‘listen here Bloots, you’re a right rotter and your edgy takes and crap jokes aren’t appropriate in the workplace’. Any more hassle and Mark_TWTD could sort him out; he’s well fit and tough these days.

Some great advice in this thread. I had a manipulative and bullying boss in my first job. I learnt how to do the broken record routine.

Boss: "I need you to work late tonight, we're really understaffed"

Me: "I'm sorry you are short staffed, I wish I could help, but I have plans that I can't change tonight."

Boss: "But you need to muck in, we're short staffed".

Me: "I'm sorry you are short staffed, I wish I could help, but I have plans that I can't change tonight."

Repeat, as nauseum. They soon stop pressuring you when the response doesn't change.

I’d follow Ricky Gervais advice. Travel to work with a fork.
Place the fork prongs just infront of your eye and align fork prongs with your boss in the distance and Imagine them now in jail !
