I was horrified when I heard there would be an estimated 20,000 deaths from Covid19, it seems we will reach that number this weekend. I can see it being closer to 50,000.

That's only hospital deaths. The real number will be higher, maybe twice as high at present on the basis of extrapolating the difference between hospital deaths and icnreased deaths reported by ONS.

Stephen Powis, NHS director said that if the figure was below 20000 then we would be going well. It wasn't an estimate of the number of deaths we should expect. Though I believe he was hoping we could do it.

The clear inference being that if 20,000 means we’ve done well, and we end up with double that, then we’ve done particularly badly.

I was thinking similar earlier. This must be going much worse than the govt had planned as they wont have released the 20k figure without them being confident they could improve on it.

20k is the benchmark against which the total number of deaths will be measured.

My original guess was 500k, so plenty of headroom yet.

Highlight so far has been the press reporting that they thought based on their calculations that 4K people had died in care homes and then being ‘shocked’ when the number leapt from 200 to the shockingly high 1000.
