4 years without a bet 10:12 - Jan 27 with 5771 viewsunbelievablue

I know a few of you are aware that I am a recovering gambling addict. I thought I'd share that I have now gone 4 years without placing a bet. Here's a piece I wrote a little while ago about my addiction/one of my fav episodes of the Simpsons:

As ever, if anyone wants any advice, let me know.

Nice one. I've just blocked all my accounts for 5 years. I'm a boredom, binge gambler and what better (worse) time than Covid to lose some money. Annoyed myself as I made a nice sum matched betting, but then that led me down the path of the devils playground - the casino and slots. Luckily it's not got me too bad, but it was a road I didn't want to continue down.

Yeah, I can't imagine how hard it has been for people during lockdown. I would have been a mess.

Well done to you! Great achievement and you should be really proud. Gambling is 1 of the worst addictions you can get, I remember Ross Kemp doing a documentary on it. Congrats once again

Cheers, and agree. Similar to a spending addiction in that you can lose everything with a few clicks.

Congratulations on nipping it in the bud, no doubt you're much better off for it.

I've seen the devastation gambling addiction can cause, with the ultimate price paid. Well done for speaking openly about it, for me one of the biggest dangers is it can all be done so secretively, and then there comes a point for some when it's too late to intervene.

Nice one for catching it when you did and fixing it. Onwards and upwards.

The secrecy, and denial, is devastating. I am dealing with the after effects still and probably always will.

Great news. My brother in law has had a multitude of addiction problems over the years (sex, gambling, drugs, drink), so the thing I have come to understand about addiction is that I can never really understand it, but I do know it is an insidious beast and the effort required to tame it is beyond anything I think I could ever do, so nothing but respect to you.

One is often replaced by another. Plenty of the professionals I've spoken to have advised me to find a productive outlet for my 'addictive personality'. I'm not convinced this is healthy, personally, but if there's a choice between gambling and something else to be obsessive with, I'll pick the alternative any day.

A really interesting read. Well written. I feel this is the sort of thing that should be put up in blogs on here.

What was the trigger for you to stop/get help? I understand if this is too personal to say.

Well done on being free for four years, particularly at a time when gambling is inescapable in football.

Wow! Incredibly honest and thought-provoking. And so valuable because we all know someone dealing with addiction – or have been in that position ourselves.

Re: the Howard Hughes flaw, isn’t that more because Hughes is entirely part of the Las Vegas mythology? As much as for trying to buy up and control Vegas and not just the strangeness of his life there although that of course created the legend.

I only stopped because my financial situation had become completely untenable. I was in a lot of debt and the house of cards fell down. This, coupled with my partner's gradual suspicions being realised. Not an inspiring story up to that point, unfortunately, but I took responsibility from then on. Debt free last November.
