And behind all the expensive lawyers being thrown at this, will be people dying in one or the other locations because of a delay. That's the real story :(

Wait until the US get their act together - it's going to be a bloodbath. I wonder if, in part, this is being fuelled by the recommendation to give jabs three weeks apart for maximum efficacy, meaning greater quantities are needed over a shorter space of time. https://edition.cnn.com/2021/01/21/politics/biden-covid-vaccination-trump/index.

On the other foot, is the EU do have the legal ability to block Pfizer vaccine into the UK from Belgium. There will be a compromise somewhere i'm sure.

Smugness about Europeans dying which will be fairly disgusting.

It could well be, but I think US is going to be dominated by Moderna and Pfizer. Johnson & Johnson's 1 dose jab isn't very far away and that is the real game changer in terms of vaccinations. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I wonder - did we place the order with Pfizer in the US? If so - we paid a US pharma company for the vaccine - that happens to be produced in Belgium and the EU might hold up/ make more difficult the export of that vaccine.
Not good. | |

It’s sickening. All the people glorying in this because they think it gives a veneer of respectability to their Brexit vote are literally boasting about the most vulnerable people in Europe dying. Not much shocks me these days but even so....
This EU demand for AZ vaccines is going to get very messy on 17:05 - Jan 27 with 2556 views | StokieBlue | Posted on this last night. The French stance last night was bizarre: "Amid a growing row, Pascal Soriot, the French head of the pharmaceutical giant, said the UK was benefiting from being early to sign a contract for 100m doses." The EU stance seems to boil down to wanting to restrict exports of the vaccine made within the EU whilst insisting on importing the vaccine produced outside the EU as a top priority. SB

They've realised how bad they fcked it and given that their joint procurement programme was meant to be a symbol of EU strength in cooperation, are now worried on a wider level. Thet also haven't had to deal with the english variant on any scale yet, so the 3 month delay could cost many thousands of lives - potentially a major wound to the EU project.

This will go down like a lead balloon on here but i'm sure part of it is not wanting to be seen to be 'beaten' by a country who has just left the bloc. It will stir up some pretty hostile feeling among others why want out. So now they want to prove the bigger kid will win by trying to bully us.

This EU demand for AZ vaccines is going to get very messy on 17:10 - Jan 27 with 2504 views | Bent_double | On the BBC a short while ago they said that back in December, AZ had problems with the UK plants producing the vaccine, so we got stocks from the 2 EU production sites. So now the EU are saying, if there are problems with the EU sites, you should provide us with stock from the UK sites. Seems reasonable.

According to James Forsyth, The reason AstraZeneca, not the Jenner Institute at Oxford’s usual partner, is producing the vaccine is because it was prepared to guarantee the UK government that this country would have 1st refusal on supplies made here. [Post edited 27 Jan 2021 17:19]

We haven't helped ourselves by giving it large in briefings. In fact it's utterly stupid to keep goading the EU with the Pfizer vaccine produced in Germany. Unless it was by design and they have chosen the Oxford one and this is exactly what they wanted. Hard to tell these days.

yeah, the grandstanding was idiotic and utterly insensitive. Understandable on a human level after all the beats they've taken during the pandemic, but really dimly offensive.

As it said in my earlier link, the Oxford vaccine was going to be developed by Merck, a German company, until HMG stepped in and said it must be done with a UK headquartered company. This was because there was a fear of no deal with the EU and the UK government wanted to ensure it was made in the UK. The Germans have also been stoking this up by claiming the AZ vaccine is useless for the over 65's.

The Germans should be furious with the EU. They were getting a deal done at the same time as us with a few other countries. Then the EU demanded to take over and spent 3 months dithering.
