Be interested to see how squad looks at start of next season.... by homer_123 10 May 2021 20:58
Let's not delude ourselves how difficult a task rebuilding this squad will be.

There seems to be an assumption that our financial situation coupled with so many players out of contract means we should find it easy to attract the right players.

It might not be the case. We could easily find ourselves fighting off many other clubs for the players we want and need. Just because there will be a dearth of players on the market doesn't mean they will be the ones we want.

I hope we don't rue the missed opportunity this year with the absolute non-attempt at getting in the play-offs when Cook arrived.

If we can't brush off Fleetwood Town for a player, given the ambition/investment in the club this summer, we may as well pack up now.

Although this isn't a new league for us anymore, I can't get used to seeing us compete for players alongside the likes of Fleetwood Town. Fleetwood Town ffs.

Naturally, he has been a good player for them, captain for large parts of Graysons time. Would have been shocked if they weren't trying to take him permanently.

We couldn't beat Oxford to Garbutt under Evans so anything better than that will be an improvement.

Geography could play a part. He is from "up north"

Always going to happen. Jeffers coached him at Everton academy so would say that, as well as Cook having him at Wigan gives us a pretty good chance. Also, with respect to Fleetwood, its Fleetwood.

I think its likely he'll be our first signing

Already there, I think we showed interest in him whilst he was there, but then leicester went in with the then laughable £1 mill offer

Because he is available doesn't mean we are interested. In other words, if he signs for Fleetwood how would we know if they had "beaten us to his signature"?

That's fair enough, as others have mentioned, you would expect them to want to sign him permanently.

Blackpool?

Even then I don't think it's fair to say we were beaten to him. From what I remember it looked like Sunderland had beaten us to sign him so we signed Ward instead.

His move to Sunderland fell through and then the salary cap came into place and he subsequently went to Blackpool.

Poll: Who's Worse?

I imagine what Connolly will weigh up is the following:

- Geographically/Family - Fleetwood is a better base for him
- Football/Ambition - Ipswich is a better option for him
- Most likely to sign and be Fleetwood's captain permanently
- Better facilities, stadium and (potentially) squad at Ipswich
- More money on the table at Ipswich, possibly a longer deal too

Another factor but a growing scouse contingency coming together at Ipswich

Poll: If selling Jackson meant getting in a wide man, would you be happy with Garbutt?

Wonder if being made captain at Fleetwood recently is part of an attempt to persuade him to join them permanently?

Though our captaincy role is vacant at the moment too.

We weren’t competing with Oxford for Garbutt. He was with them the season before. He went to Blackpool because we weren’t prepared to pay his initial wage demand
