Can't see Italy winning it. France have a phenomenal side, and while Spain don't quite appear to have the depth, their first XI still looks very good. I think England will miss Maguire, we're just a little short although I do think we'll have a decent tournament, maybe semis with a bit of a tailwind.
Outside(ish) bet, as much as the current holders can be an outside bet, Portugal. Got so much quality and much less reliant on Ronaldo than they've been in donkeys. I'm surprised they're as long as 10/1. |  |

Italy looking much better than they have been for a while, the Dutch too though probably not good enough to go too far.
Belgium still sit in this strange zone where they've got a very good team but no-one seems to seriously think they'll win it, which is because they probably won't.
If England finish 1st they play 2nd in the 'group of death' don't they? Would be a bit concerned about that to be honest as we won't beat France, even if we play better than the Germans we'll find a way to lose, and Portugal, like they were last time, are similar to Belgium in that they straddle both lanes of 'not good enough to worry better Nations' and 'have an outside chance of winning the thing'. |  |

Portugal for me. A team full of very good players, well organised, flair, Ronaldo and they're hard as nails.
Failing that France or Belgium.

I still have no idea how Portugal won the last one, this team is miles ahead of the one 5 years ago but their chances are slimmer. I do reckon they'll come 2nd ahead of Germany and will then crash out against the mighty England in the next round, who will go and win the thing! |  |

the thing about France is that quite a lot of their first team have had pretty indifferent seasons. Mbappe is another level, but who else has been good? I don't think Rabiot and Pogba in midfield should terrify anyone, Kimpembe and Varane in defence is a downgrade on Stones and Maguire.

in fairness, in a 26-man squad a good 10 players are going to get about 10 minutes of competitive football between them.
"If they get fit, play them, if they don't, nothing lost" probably is a better bet than taking 2 more fringe players who won't play under any conceivable circumstances. | |
