Theres a feeling in my stomach that I want to be excited 08:44 - Dec 17 with 1720 viewsCheltenham_Blue

by the appointment of McKenna, and on the face of it, it looks a really good, forward thinking appointment.

But we've had so many false starts, new dawns and misfires over the last 14 years, that this time, I just can't muster it. I'll just wait and see what happens.

Can everyone just give him time please? This board will be unbearable come Easter if we aren't keeping up with the pack.

Because he’s not a Warnock type I think he’ll get a free hit this season from the fans. Whether that’s the right approach from the club I’m not so sure — can’t say another season facing Accrington and Cheltenham particularly appeals. But then again, no appointment guarantees promotion.

Of course, it might go fantastically from the off and we storm promotion. Or we might fall apart completely.

I think had we won the Charlton and Wigan games then maybe this appointment wouldn’t have happened and we’d have got a Warnock or a Harris to try and get us up this year. As it stands I think everyone can see promotion is a very long shot at this stage and so a project appointment makes more sense. I doubt anyone is expecting McKenna to come in and put 5 wins on the bounce together, the rest of this season will be a learning curve for him and hopefully we start putting a good run of form together to take us into 22/23.

Need to keep a lid on it and see how this percolates. How many times over recent seasons have we overhyped things at our club and then ultimately been disappointed. Leave him be, let him and Pert get on with their jobs instead of fans suggesting McKenna is the next messiah.

It HAS to be seen as an 18 month project now by all involved. I hope Ashton's words replicate that and do not pump up expectations - I am sure they will. Realistically, he has not left Man United and working alongside someone like Rangnick for a 6 month punt at getting us promoted or he's off. There must have been some re-assurances there, and a 3.5 deal whilst not being in the Lambert/Pardew territory is longer than Cook got when he was appointed.

Whilst I'm totally disappointed with this season (OBVIOUSLY) this appointment whilst it could be considered risky it at least suggests to me that the powers that be at our club DO see this as a long term project (long term project being getting us up through the leagues)

The long term definition from one to the next could differ but we've got stability and quite obviously long term backing from the Americans

I'm not advocating we sit in this league for another 2-3 seasons don't get me wrong

Can't see it happening this season but next season I hope we and KMc give it a bl00dy good go

I've a good feeling about this announcement

The only trouble with this kind of appointment, is IF, (Big IF), he gets us up, this season or next and then, gets us performing in the Championship, given his reputation already, its only a matter of time before an Aston Villa, Rangers, Everton come in for him.

Wouldn't that be the same for anyone we appointed considering we are where we are as a club

That said should we get up at some point and we have a decent campaign in the Champ and someone does come in for him from the Prem , our ceiling would be pretty much higher than it is right now and hopefully we'd have decent candidates to choose from

Albeit that is miles away yet but ......

I'm very 'meh' about it tbh.

I hope he does well, at least well enough to keep us up this season, but I've got a feeling it will go badly wrong a few times (2 or 3 heavy defeats) before he gets it right.

My expectations for this football club are at an all-time low, hopefully this new team can prove me wrong and get us challenging very quickly.

Yep, there are some very valid concerns I think. He's a million miles away from the sort of profile that I would be going for but we're not paid the big bucks to make these decisions.

But, what can we do as fans other than cross our fingers and give the team as much support as possible?

Really happy with McKenna. He's got proper coaching experience at the highest of levels.

There are good problems and bad problems. I would say being so successful that some of the UKs biggest sides want him would be a very nice problem to have.

Just hope he's adjustable with the inferior players, he's so used to working with top quality ball players that this will be a bit of a culture shock, of course I'm not tarring all our players with that brush but a few, hence silly mistakes, this is League One after all, a different game to where he is. play a system that reflects that, at least for now....

The fact it's not a name with any real expectations attached should at least dampen the enthusiasm and reign ourselves in a bit

Cook may have left us in a poor position but I don't think the new manager inherits a bad situation, it's a reasonable squad with the right tinkering and smart additions that could be turned around, built and developed into something far better

I think we just need to see progress, and from here that doesn’t even mean the playoffs. To me, if he gets us playing a certain way, we can see the players improving and knowing their roles, make 2 or 3 decent additions in January, and build some momentum heading into the end of the season then I’ll be happy. Not a free hit necessarily but no expectations to make the playoffs, just give us something to believe in and get behind so that we can hit the ground running next season.

Why wouldn't people give him time?

He's coming in mid-season on a 3.5 year contract.

Anyone not giving him time is a tool.

This season is basically a write off, you hope to see some promising signs and a move up the table - but getting to the top 6 is incredibly unlikely.

He'll be judged from next season, and the pressure will be on then to get us up, as it was Cook this year

Unlikely but in a similar situation to Cook whereby he will want to get off to a good start in order to buy himself some leeway for next season.

For me, I would like to see us finish as close to the play offs as possible with a view to taking the momentum into next season if we dont make it.

I'd be OK with that. A bit like Southampton, they have a habit of appointing less well known coaches, they don't seem to go for the usual suspects. Hasenhuttl, Pochettino may not have been the first names on their fans list but have done well. If we become a club that finds and nurtures managerial talent for clubs higher up the chain, rather like we try to do with players, I would prefer that to being a last big pay day for managers that seem to be drifting down the leagues. It's in our DNA, Sir Alf and Sir Bobby remain our two great managerial success stories.

Agreed, I think Cook's biggest mistake was not banking alot more credit in the bank last season by at least attempting to reach the playoffs, it always meant if the wheels came off his demolition job he would be up against it

I'm sure Kieran wont make the same mistake and just write off this season, it doesnt have to be the aim to be in the playoffs, which for all the bluster about was never the be all end all goal this season for Cook either, it's about aiming to be up that end of the table, stringing some wins together, showing a bit of form and most importantly progress.

Definitely. Anything close to the 2 points a game mark will be a good enough sign for next season. Hopefully a couple of players in to strenghen will give him a boost with the squad.

2 ppg is going to be a tough ask I think, that's probably automatic promotion form.

Having said that, we yielded 1.7 ppg from Cook's last 10 league games (6 pf whom are currently in the top 8) and that wasn't deemed good enough.

I think that has to be the aim though considering the budget here. Play off form isnt good enough but Mckenna will get some relief as he wouldn't have had a summer window.
