Huge win for Labour in Scotland 06:46 - Oct 6 with 16334 views | GlasgowBlue | Nationalists imploding. Tory collapse. Labour majority at the next election. After years of mediocre leadership, Scottish Labour has been revitalised by Anas Sarwar, who is like a breath of fresh air.

The lawsuit concerns the 2020 leak of an 860-page document that claimed factional hostility towards Jeremy Corbyn contributed to the party’s ineffective handling of such complaints. Proposing a trial date no earlier than 28 February 2025, almost five years after the leak, the party has claimed it would be “unfair and inappropriate” to have to go to trial while it runs a general election campaign." How unfair might it be to fight an election with party machinery running against you I wonder!

Interesting to note the following analysis from the BBC website. "The way this ended as a two-horse race will raise questions about whether tactical voting was a factor. It certainly has been in Scotland of late - in the 2019 election, almost every seat became a two-party contest between the SNP and whoever was most likely to challenge them locally. Labour have probably benefited here, but would the same happen in a general election? The worry for the Conservatives in particular is that it might continue in a lopsided fashion. After years of campaigning as opposition to the SNP, Tory voters might back Labour in seats where they are best placed to challenge them. But will Labour and Lib Dem supporters be willing to vote Tory in the not-insubstantial list of SNP-Conservative marginal contests, when their whole general election campaign will be about kicking Rishi Sunak out of office?" You're desperate for an angle to attack Labour, but "A Labour source could be heard saying that the turnout was better than expected" and "Earlier, an SNP source told The National they would be surprised if the turnout was above 40%." So the turnout was as expected, no story.

He used the same line when Labour won Shelby from the Tories. Despite by elections having traditionally lower turnouts than general elections.

I wonder if when turnouts are less than 50% the results of elections should be declared void.?

An observation would be, the turnout was x%. Another observation could be, x% turnout is higher/lower/similar to recent turnouts of w%, y%,z% Adding the term “inspiring” is just an expression of opinion.

I would imagine that if such a law was passed, the turnout would be much higher. However, we play under the current rules.

That's about the normal level for a by-election anywhere in Britain, a bit over half what you'd expect in a GE. Par for the course, especially if the weather was not good and one or more of the main parties is very demoralised - their habitual voters simply don't turn up, rather than switching.

“Who are this 'Labour' you speak of and what do they stand for? ” You’ll be disappointed with the Nationalists then: https://www.snp.org/policy-area/economy/ Basically no economic policies of any substance, they aren’t even offering unicorns and revenue based on oil at $110bbl any more….
