Got a nagging feeling this is too similar to 2001-02. 11:55 - Dec 1 with 3136 viewsITFC_Forever

In that we’ll go down and be able to point to at least a dozen points we carelessly dropped which would have saved us.

Sooner or later, there’s a point where it’s not unlucky or the officials fault every week, but it becomes more than that.

Staying up this season was always going to an even bigger achievement than the double promotion.
I know talk of “free hits” is frowned upon as defeatist talk, but this season really is - no-one expected us to be in the Prem this season.

I’ll be very surprised if McK is still here next season, so it’s how we then move on.

As I've said before.

Just enjoy it. We can't control the ride...it'll be what it'll be.

We are giving it a real go. There's enough about us to stay up but was always going to be tough.

I'm just going to enjoy this season...its earlier than expected.

Yup, I thought similar after last weekends game to be honest.

You can view it as ‘great, we’ve got a point against United when only 2 years ago we was playing Fleetwood’. Or, you really see it’s as 2 points dropped given how we played and that if we’re serious about wanting to stay in the division, we need to start turning some of these draws to wins and 0 points to at least draws.

Pretty confident he won’t be here next season whatever happens now. He’s shown he can make a team competitive in the Prem.
I agree with everything else. Just gotta rely on Ashton et al choosing another gun manager next year.

Where will he go though? There needs to be a vacancy somewhere for him to go to.

We've already had a summer of changes at the clubs we'd likely lose him to. Brighton doing absolutely fine, ditto Chelsea, United only just appointed Amorim. I guess what happens with Spurs between now and May will be interesting but I can't see him going anywhere else just yet.

West Ham may pull the trigger on Lopetegui soon but don't see them replacing him with a manager who has only won 1 game.

Sure, he won't be here forever but I can't see a 'progressive' job for him quite at the moment.

absolutely spot on.

just enjoy the ride, considering where we were 2 years and 350 days ago, hands up who thought we'd be in the Premiership ?

anyway for the past two seasons some of our fans have written us before Christmas, into January even in February. Id like to think by now some would keep a little bit of belief going, it aint over till its mathematically impossible.

I think not getting the extra striker in has really cost us, along with rotten luck with injuries and refereeing decisions.

As you say, lots of sliding doors moments, similar to 01-02.

The amount of injuries though I’m starting to feel cannot just be bad luck.

I've come away from the Villa, Leicester and Man U games feeling that way. Good performances and solid results, but all the sort of games where you want to turn 1 point into 3.

I think we'll stay up, just about, but we can't afford too many more 'what if' games.

True but McKenna's reputation is, rightly, going to precede him. Just keeping us competitive in this division will raise his stock.

The patting our back stuff is starting to grate a little. It’s part of our story and we should be proud of the journey but we do need to start more often than not picking up points when on top.

Think we will fall short, need 26 points from 25 games and that wouldn’t give us a guarantee.

Agree totally with Homer. Enjoy the ride. Don’t get me wrong, I hate losing. Always have always will. But it is what it is. If we hold our nerve, you never know but if it’s not to be it won’t be for the want of trying. As long as the boys and club do that, I’ll be ok with it and it’ll stand us in good stead next season.

Re the OP it feels very different to 2001/2 to me. We went from a good, cohesive team to a fractured one for reasons we all know. This time we are striving to bridge a gap, not hang on to what we had.

Your last paragraph is fair… and we’re not at all in that boat.

The similarities I was making were in relation to the results and the points that are slipping through our fingers.

Yep agreed.

The bench looks painfully thin at the moment. Had the feeling yesterday the longer the game went 0-0, the less likely we were to get anything. Once they scored, never had that conviction we could get back in it.

Exactly. We have done everything to get it right that we can. Ultimately there are some things that go against all teams and 3 end up relegated. If we do go down, we have a great foundation to get back up. If we don't go down, we have a great foundation to build on in the Premier League.

Sooner or later McKenna will leave. If we go down, it may well mean less interest in him than if we stay up. When he does go it will only be for something better than he has here. We do need to prepare for getting the next managerial appointment right whenever it does come but I am sure we will do all we can to hang on to the man who is clearly right for the role that we already have.

Everton showing that a draw with ManUtd wasn’t a bad result. Agreed we could’ve won it last Sunday, and should be turning losses (like yesterday) into draws and draws (like Leicester and ManUtd) into wins…we’ve proven under McKenna that we can do big second half’s to seasons with January signings having big impacts, we need to hope that the same happens this season.

I'm not sure this season is going any differently to what a lot of us expected, certainly me anyway.

I never imagined us sitting safely in midtable or anything like that but also hoped we wouldn't end up getting cut adrift like Sheffield United and Burnley last season. And so far that's how it's panned out. Nothing's really changed for me since the start of the season.

The quality of the prem is ridiculous as expected.

We have a great manager and a squad which is a mix of quality emerging talent and players probably well in excess of their limits. All massively bought into the strategy though.

We have a mini league of 6 teams at the bottom. We need to win a few at home. We've been really good at home but should have delivered more points. We then need to burgle away points like Spurs and Brighton.

To me we will fall short as we just lack enough quality, specifically off of the bench. This is no one's fault. It's just reality.
