It does rely on refs paying attention and not turning their backs. And also being able to reliably counts to 8 seconds. Good idea in theory though. I’d do the same for throw-in; just reverse the throw if they time waste.

Will they actually enforce it though? There’s already a rule about how long they’re allowed to hold on to the ball for but I’ve never seen it enforced

Surely the eight second count down is a perfect job for the VAR portacabin and they let the ref know if it has been breached ?

I swear there used to be a six second rule, otherwise the keeper would be booked? It seemed to fade away quite quickly.

The Palace keeper certainly took a LOT longer than 6 seconds every time he had it.

Will soon get rolled back once managers and players start complaining that their GK is being prevented from releasing the ball sooner and it's not fair to make them get rid of it if there's nothing on etc.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Surely thats not something VAR needs to get involved in. Its not difficult to know what 8 seconds is. Its not going to be timed every time (i doubt!)

I like the idea of the OP because the Gks do take the mick and have done for years and years. Is it just going to lead to goalies faking injuries all the time to get more time.

And on at least two occasions he carried it over the 18-yard line before kicking it upfield.

C'mon, that electronic number board doesn't hold itself up y'know. Then there are the studs on the bottoms of the substitutes boots to check, manager's sweary outbursts to listen out for, Conor Chaplin's goal celebration sprints to try and check, probably some check lists to fill in etc. It's a wonder there isn't a fourth official's assistant.

This would solve a lot of problems, booking the keeper is pretty pointless because they know they’re never going to get a second yellow for carrying on taking too long so it’s not really a deterrent at all

I love the intention but I could see it getting messy and controversial at times. Will also cause a lot of mistakes because keepers will be hurriedly getting rid of it - might be a good or bad thing for that reason.

I'd probably make it 10 seconds, considering you often see 15-20 I don't think that would be too bad.

Once the keeper gets the ball then players have to work harder to make themselves available? If the outfield players don't work hard enough then it could lead to mistakes.

I agree 10 seconds a better amount of time if you really are going to enforce this.

I assume as well its only time in the keepers hands this applies to and not the ball at the keepers feet as they can waste time like that but upto the opposition to press.

Or they could just apply the existing rule. Within a fortnight, the issue would stop.

Its still there but its an indirect free kick not a booking. I have seen it applied twice. Once correctly, and once by a disgraceful biased ref in a youth game, who applied it despite it being a kick off the deck, by a side already 12 down.
