Live TV 14:42 - Dec 6 with 3440 views | MattinLondon | Someone I spoke to yesterday mentioned that they don’t have a TV license and as a consequence they aren’t allowed to watch live tv and this includes sport which isn’t on the BBC. Now she said to get around this they simply pause a match and watch a few minute after it’s started so that they aren’t technically watching live telly. Are they right in the two above points? Just seemed incorrect information- I have tried to google this but haven’t found anything and it’s been bugging me. Thanks.

I do think that if people don’t wish to use any BBC products then they shouldn’t have to legally fund it. And I say this as someone who thinks that the BBC is a fantastic institution and who is happy to pay the license fee. But that wasn’t what I was asking - simply wanted to know what the definition of live tv is as simply pausing something for a few seconds seemed too simplistic. [Post edited 6 Dec 2024 14:53]

More of a massive vault full of gold bars and platinum nuggets, for each of you? PS. I’ll be really disappointed if I find out you were a tea lady at the DVLA and not some big shot holding politicians’ feet to the fire. PPS. The lady you spoke to Matt is a numpty! [Post edited 6 Dec 2024 17:54]

If you’re on a low fixed income, £14 pcm matters. Not that I condone her actions - the TV licence is fantastic value for money as far as I’m concerned, and much cheaper than Sky etc., including as it does all radio, esp the superb BBC World Service .

BBC TV, radio and internet is an important source of independent and accurate news and information in the world, at a time we need that more than ever. If people opt out and get their 'information' from Facebook and X then we really could be in trouble.

At the moment, I still consider it an impartial and reliable source of information. I do hope that continues. With the scandals of late with high profile presenters, it does make you think about the integrity of the corporation as a whole. For now I'm in, but vigilant. A truly impartial news service is a unicorn, these days.

I love ir when those types proudly quote some 15th century law that they insist justifies their stance on a particular issue. They are, of course, woefully ignorant of the conceot of posteriori iure contradicit priori

I wonder how many people who never use BBC products actually use none of them. No BBC radio at all ever. No BBC TV at all ever. No online services from the BBC ever. I suspect that most people that is absolutely true for probably wouldn't watch TV at all and so wouldn't need the licence anyway.

For a brief, unhappy few months I worked in Housing Benefits at my local authority. We actually had to have a specific policy and webpage for those people.

Live TV on 11:36 - Dec 14 with 1431 views | SuffolkPunchFC | There seems to me much confusion as to what the TV License is for. Although it is true that it is used to help fund the BBC services, it is not a license to watch/listen BBC . It is a license for watching, recording or catching up ANY live broadcast in the UK. This includes BBC, ITV, SKY, Youtube etc. The terms of coverage were tightened up a few years ago to adapt to the shift to streaming services, rather than traditional over-the-air distribution. Do you think its fair to pay the BBC for the right to watch Sky or any other channel live?

I personally dont have a TV license for a few reasons but i still listen to BBC radio a lot. You could argue that the money for the radio comes from the TV license or you could argue that the money for the radio comes from the their commercial arm. As its presented as a TV license and as i dont watch much TV it didnt make sense any more. Plus the BBC choose to spend the money on shows like Mrs Browns Boys, which to be blunt is awful.
