Cresswell Hails Recalled Trio

Aaron Cresswell has hailed the contributions of his recently recalled team-mates as Ipswich look to follow a handsome win over Championship leaders West Ham with another victory, this time at the expense of rock-bottom Coventry.

Left-back Cresswell, 22, said: “Luke Hyam has probably been our best player in the last few games, with Andy Drury and Tommy Smith not far behind.

“They have made the most of their chances to impress and stay in the side. All three have done exceptionally well.”

While Cresswell has been virtually ever-present since arriving from Tranmere last summer, the others were out of the first team picture until recently.

Cresswell added: “It was a great win against West Ham. Any 5-1 win is something to get excited about, but when it comes against the leaders and you also beat them at their place it just shows that we are capable of beating anyone.

“It was long overdue, that result. We haven’t had the best of times this season, but I felt we also deserved to take something from the previous two games against Blackpool and Leeds.

“There are lots of reasons why we lost both games but I felt the luck deserted us and we have felt a bit hard done by with goals we have conceded very late on.

“Now the aim must be to build on what we achieved against West Ham when we meet Coventry and hopefully keep pushing up the table.”

Cresswell will soon be joined in Suffolk by his girlfriend from Merseyside and the couple have a new home lined up, an indication that he feels settled since his move south just over seven months ago.

He said: “I was still living with my mum when I signed for Ipswich and I’d never been away from home, so obviously I moved into the area not knowing a thing about it.

“But I really love it down here. It’s a lot different to Liverpool — a lot quieter for a start — but it’s a nice place to live and I’m enjoying my football.”

Bored with saying give youngsters a chance PJ, as they are the future of our club. Fine to have the odd experienced player in the squad but this beloved club of ours has always had faith in youth. We will never compete with big boys on the cash front & look where spend spend got us!

For the first time in ages, dare I say it, I'm feeling a lot more positive about our future, we have the bones of a good team...onward and upward PJ please!!!!

village_blue added 12:20 - Feb 3 Yes agree that we look a better team with Hyam and Drury playing in the centre of midfield rather the overpaid over the hill aged primadonnas that had been playing there previously, Keep up the good and keep faith in the youngsters that are the future of the club.

Agreed algarvefan, we won't be able to attract players like Southampton, Leicester and West Ham do, but if we can bring in young hungry players, especially those from our youth academy, then we will have the nucleus of a very good team.

Joe Whight, Jide Maduako, Cody Cropper, Byron Lawrence all have the ability to come into the first team either next season or the season after.

It's a big bonus whether players who have been written off come good, and with Smith, Hyam and Drury we could have three all at once!

Smith's condidence was shattered early in the season so credit to him for how he has come back. I worry he isn't strong enough, as the late Leeds goal showed, but against West Ham he did nothing wrong.

I didn't really understand why Keane dropped Hyam after his good run last season, then it was a shame he couldn't get into the team before now under Jewell too, but now is his chance. His energy and ability to break up opposition attacks is much needed.

Drury looks like an ex-Premier League player to me, not much pace but seems to be full of quality with a great eye for a pass. He works hard and can win a header too. If he can establish himself in the side he was a real bargain at just £150K.

Pessimistic added 13:01 - Feb 3 Aaron...the good news is that you didn't lose both games! You drew with Blackpool remember - although having taken a two goal lead I guess it must have felt like a defeat... Keep going kid, you are doing us proud!

But what a ray of light he has been since he came here in the summer! It proves what talent can be found in the lower leagues. Keep up the good work son.

Guthrum added 19:15 - Feb 3 Worked out earlier in the season that there were only four young, lower league players bought in the summer by Championship clubs who went straight on to become successful regulars in their teams. Ipswich Town are very fortunate (or shrewd) to have attracted one of those four in Aaron Cresswell.

Cresswell has been a breath of fresh air all season, he now has some younger teammates and is loving it, we as supporters feel the same. On Tuesday we had a team that we really wanted to support, a team getting into the opponents faces, a midfield determined to protect the defense, while creating...thank you Hyam and Drury. The defense showing a more no nonsense approach backed by a keeper who distributes well and bleeds for Ipswich and as still a young lad needs the support of both coaches and supporters.
Martin and JET, I have always had my doubts, BUT, the former in his new position is a revelation (I have never been a fan when he was played out wide)...while JET is now starting to bring the WOW factor back to PR. Tuesday night was the first time I have really enjoyed a game/performance since ME took over!
Yes we have had a few odd games in the past...but that could be PJ's turning point, he only changed one player the hardworking/back to form Chopra, for the hardworking Scotland, who then put West Ham on the back foot and ensured a great result.

Agree harlingblue- the latest lineup has bags of determination- a much needed breath of fresh air. For the first time in years I feel like our team is playing nearer to 100% effort and spirit- and it is showing the other players up- hope the older players raise their attitude and game and our squad will be competitive next season (note with a few wise signings obviously!)... COYB!
