Part of me is amazed he's on 28%. He's so appalling I struggle to see why anyone would vote for him - I assume any vaguely sensible Tory would probably vote for the Lib Dem candidate. From a local Facebook group, the only people I can see supporting him are people 60+ who are only capable of parroting tabloid headlines and insults about Sadiq Khan. |

My family are very much like that. Proper Suffolk folk who rarely go outside the county and only go to London for West End shows. But they delight in telling me what an awful place it is and how I must be on the look out for Muslim extremists etc. Where they get this information I have no idea, but it's depressing. | |

I've been busy working. Very right wing capitalist of me, sorry.
My politics - fully paid up member of the Liberal Democrats. Economically slightly right of centre (save then spend, prudence, live within your means, give away part of what you earn to those poorer than you), socially slightly left of centre (look after the poor and marginalised, protect the weak, defend justice (legal and social), allow personal wealth but realise the pie is only so big and the more you have the less is left for everyone else, protect freedom).
The Lib Dems nationally aren't doing this, but they are closer than the other two parties. Locally however they are, we live is a super safe Tory seat but the three local councillors are Lib Dem because they are local, hard working, really involved and will do anything for the people of the town (up at 3AM recently filling sand bags to stem the floods).
What worries me most at the moment is that real minority views are being "normalised" and "condoned". The view that "I can do it because everyone else is doing it" and because you are in an echo chamber and there is no community check and balance (eg normal people). The lockdowns have undoubtedly made this worse - I was banned from a "late capitalism" forum earlier this week for suggesting that hard left and hard right are so similar they are like a horseshoe where the top almost touches (more or less that statement word for word). Banned for a "childish and immature" view.
My hope is that the "old fashioned" virtues of politeness, helpfulness and civility will win through in the end - I consider that most people have these at their core, it's just that "most" seems to be declining. |
That's all very nice.
I'm not sure how any of that is relevant to my point about opinions needing to be rooted in evidence though.

National crime rates have gone through through the roof, sadly. Khan bears some responsibility, but the increase in London is below the increase in most areas, and there's one common denominator between all of these. Crime always goes up under Tory governments. | |

Have a think about this. Where does most of the Met budget come from, which party has been defunding the police for a decade, and who did you vote for? Answers on a postcard (because I feel an envelope might be too hard for you to manage). | |

It's not just cuts to police either. Cuts to local council budgets have meant things like youth and community work have been cut to the bone, they don't really exist at all in some areas anymore.
If Paz genuinely cared about crime in London he'd be seething at the Tories for what a decade of Tory rule and Tory cuts has caused, but that would require actually giving it some thought. Much easier to point at the Muslim and say it's all his fault. | |
