The EU Justice Commissioner is potentially accusing the U.K. of starting a vaccine war:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55852698

Even as a Remainer I have to say that seems a bit rich.

That’s lovely however my understanding of contract law is you can act once a breach has occurred and as they are not due to receive the first batch until April there is pretty much Jack all they can do until a breach has occurred ( of course this is based on English law, Belgian contractual law was understandably not taught as part of my law degree! ).

It sounds like the EU are trying to deflect blame from themselves onto the UK even though the UK had nothing to do with the contract.

Come on people, leaver or remainer, this one is obvious.

Anti EU movements in the EU. Le Pen still a threat in France. They can't be seen to 'lose' to a member who just left the bloc and they will throw everything at this to make sure their slow movement isn't used against them. I don't doubt that they are looking out for EU citizens but that is second on the list for EU officials.

Truly impaired.

Politics. Clearly been briefed. Maybe it's to try and turn public opinion in the UK so we have excess and then once they have them there will be some 'new evidence'.

Doubt it will work.

The biggest problem is it just encourages the anti-vaxxers which will be awful in the long term. The EU’s rhetoric is becoming increasingly dangerous for everyone.

There were loads on here openly laughing at the Brexiters because we didn't sign up.

Their dealing of the fallout on this is exactly why I don't trust or have any respect for the charlatans.

There is an interesting article in the Independent. A contracts lawyer who’s looked at what’s been published reckons the EU publishing it means they’ve shot themselves in the foot. The EU according to him/her hasn’t a legal leg to stand on.

In another bit of news, they’ve invoked article 16 of the Brexit Agreement to stop Pfizer vaccine coming from the EU to NI and in turn the rest of the U.K. Theoretically that means a ‘hard border’. Nice. Also means a delay to the vaccination programme of a couple of months.

The EU members have accused the U.K. of all sorts of stuff today and some of their language has been awful. They’re thrashing around like a hooked fish. The U.K. govt by keeping quiet on this at the moment is right in keeping its powder dry. That makes it 2 things it’s got right out of about 50 in the last year.

Lastly, it turns out the EU hasn’t signed an agreement for the new Novavax vaccine yet. I presume as it’s one of the best, subject to approval, they will and be demanding the Stockton on Tees manufacturer sends the vaccine to them first. Jog on.

They’re not covering themselves in glory.

If I am quite honest it's a bit of a problem at the moment, mainly because the government doesn't seem to know what they are going to do with CE and UKCA regs

It might sort itself out but NI is also a bit of a problem as we have a very big customer over there and it looks as though they will accept CE but not UKCA.

The worse thing to be honest is that no one seems to have a bloody clue what is going to happen and Covid is quite naturally taking all the ministers time up.

The EU invoked Article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol which allows parts of the deal to be unilaterally overridden.

I'm getting all nostalgic for the days when it was us swivel eyed loony Brexiteers who were putting the Good Friday Agreement in jeopardy.

Edit. I see Churchman has already linked this.

Although the EU may have reached an agreement with AstraZeneca last August the contract was approved by the EU until 11th November.

The UK is "carefully considering" its next steps after the EU introduced export controls on vaccines made in the bloc, amid a row about delivery shortfalls.

Under Northern Ireland's Brexit deal, all products should be exported from the EU to NI without checks or controls.

But the EU believed this could be used to circumvent export controls, with NI becoming a backdoor to the wider UK.

Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove has spoken with European Commission Vice President MaroÅ¡ Å efčovič to express the UK’s concern over a lack of notification from the EU about its actions in relation to the NI protocol.

"Gove told him the UK would now be carefully considering next steps," Downing Street said in a statement.

Wonder if the Pfizer vaccine contract has a clause in it about Exit controls, I wouldn’t be surprised if it does as the UK demanded the AZ contract had a Uk supply chain for just this occasion. Wonder if we have access via a 3rd party.

The clause about mixing vaccines doesn’t look so stupid now and I wonder if we’ve done more research on this than we actually think.

If the contracts are clear and AZ are right then any EU block on experts would be an act of aggression and we should block the equivalent number of AZ vaccines from going to Europe.

They cannot get away with basically stealing UK vaccines IF the contract is as AZ says.

I wish the people of Europe nothing but good things and I hope they get plenty of vaccines ASAP but that would be unacceptable.

Tbh I did understand what the Independent dude said I can’t remember enough to make sense. I should have put a link in - apols. Either way, the EU are dispensing blame and trying to bully to cover their failures.

I think it’s a dangerous game, especially doing that with multinational companies.

Oh come on. It's quite clear this is at least partly political. He has a bloody EU flag next to his name.

They don't want to be seen to have responded less successfully than a former member, especially with people like Le Pen about to weaponise it (something i'd be pretty disgusted by as she would be using European deaths to score political points). Even so, this is so clearly at least partly political. They aren't going to admit it but it's incredibly obvious.

People having flags next to their names doesn't mean they're being party political on individual issues. I'd have an EU flag next to my twitter name if I could be arsed and had the space, yet I'm perfectly prepared to accept whatever's actually legally correct in the contract.

Edited to add that it may not have been clear, but my post was purely in response to Otto Parsnips re the contract, and not in any way to the chap he was replying to re 60 years' peace in Europe.
