The argument is heating up on easing restrictions 23:10 - Feb 4 with 15270 viewsStokieBlue

So it looks like the Tory backbenchers and the Chancellor are applying pressure to try and get the government to bring forward the dates for considering easing the lockdown in England.

This is against the advice of SAGE who Sunak has stated are acting too conservatively. You also have Hunt coming out and saying lockdown should be continued until cases are to 1000 per day and Starmer saying we shouldn't open up too early like other times.

Then you have Chope on Newsnight saying that the 8th March should be "lockdown freedom day" when the public get their "liberties" back and other evidences showing that only 20% of people are following isolation orders.

The issue here is that if there are 20,000 cases a day, even if the R is low (say 0.6) then when you open up that is still a high baseline number of cases which can start growing exponentially again and it won't take long to get to high numbers. Counter to that, if you wait until cases are 5,000 per day it will take longer to reach higher cases and it will also allow more time for vaccinations before those cases reach a high level.

Interesting Chope refused to say what an acceptable number of cases were to open up, he said that isn't the point and that people should be able to exercise their freedom and even referred to the public as "prisoners" so that might give an indication where a number of Tory backbenchers are at the moment.

You also have Damien Green on Newsnight saying that this has to be the last lockdown for both economic and mental health reasons and in order for that to be the case we need come out in a cautious and pragmatic way due to the new variants.

So it seems there are two very solid blocks of opinion but very little agreement between the blocks.

What are peoples thoughts?

I'm not surprised you got an earful then. Why on earth isn't this at the front of your mind when out for a walk, especially with an old couple approaching? I'm trying to hold back here because generally you seem a decent chap on here, but I'm sick of people wandering about getting too close, not moving etc. as if they're oblivious to a global pandemic being on.

The person with me as shocked at their reactions as I was. And i passed many others without any issues.

You've just said you doubt you were 2 meters apart when you passed, so you did encroach on someone coming the other way.

The chances of Covid transmission in the circumstances BL has described are virtually nil. The old geezer massively over reacted. As has been said, not being nasty, he’s just developed anxiety probably.

Maybe the others you pass are a bit shy to speak up. You've just admitted you doubt you were 2 meters from them, so I'm not sure why you're feeling like you're the victim in this, either at the time or from the comments on here.

You just don't get it do you?

What about your own death, would that be acceptable? If, for example, your premature demise, sad though it would be, meant 5 kids got back to school earlier, would that be ok?

It's not even about deaths, people aren't either 'dead' or 'completely OK'. I'd like to know what percentage of people with serious health issues/disabilities requiring long-term support caused by long Covid that Paz would deem acceptable....but on second thoughts this is the man who claimed 'libraries should all be closed because we don't need them.' I wouldn't trust someone who said something that sh*twitted to advise me on how to tie my shoelaces, let alone on public health policy.

No pavements are two meters wide. It is physically impossible to leave two meters when passing everyone. If you did you would have been run over by March 24th last year!

As I posted earlier I walk in the road if it's safe. Or stand to one side behind a parked car. Or cross to the other side. It's not a difficult work around is it?

EDIT: Funny you've not mentioned up until now that the path was 2 meters wide. The exact amount you're meant to be distant. Such a coincidence that!

It wouldn't be bold to open up, it would be reckless.

The risks due to non-100% efficacy and mutations are negligible compared to a third wave with more tens of thousands of people dying. Even the first dose of the double dose vaccines have been shown to virtually eliminate hospitalisations. They also massively limit transmission. And it's the rampant spread of the disease that provides the opportunity for the mutations too.

A bold decision will be one that Paz agrees with.

A decision from the government that would be along the lines of, the science, case numbers, and loading on the NHS means we need to ignore specific dates we falsely set an expectation around.
We were wrong last year to do it, we are sorry to falsely set expectations again.
We need to hold on, keep with the vaccine program get case numbers down.
Then we will start to slowly open up.

That would also be a bold decision.

Behave yourself. I merely pointed out that anxiety levels are so high that an old couple are so scarsd that they would shout at and verbally abuse complete strangers who didnt understand why they were waving their arms.

No arguments were had. I merely point out that there are some incredibly anxious people behaving in quite bizarre ways atm.

And you were not there so have no idea of the path/road. There was plenty of space for everyone, albeit no, not a full 2m. But if you think it accecptable to shout at anyone who passes you withiin 2m then I think we will have to agree to differ on that.

They’ll be other people on the other side of the road. You can’t seriously be claiming that you haven’t passed within two meters of somebody on the pavement since March last year. That is just not possible.

I have to go down Romford high street to get groceries or I will starve. You can not leave 2 meters between everyone there. You can’t. There isn’t a road to cross or cars to hide behind. These are facts.
