The argument is heating up on easing restrictions 23:10 - Feb 4 with 15271 views | StokieBlue | So it looks like the Tory backbenchers and the Chancellor are applying pressure to try and get the government to bring forward the dates for considering easing the lockdown in England. This is against the advice of SAGE who Sunak has stated are acting too conservatively. You also have Hunt coming out and saying lockdown should be continued until cases are to 1000 per day and Starmer saying we shouldn't open up too early like other times. Then you have Chope on Newsnight saying that the 8th March should be "lockdown freedom day" when the public get their "liberties" back and other evidences showing that only 20% of people are following isolation orders. The issue here is that if there are 20,000 cases a day, even if the R is low (say 0.6) then when you open up that is still a high baseline number of cases which can start growing exponentially again and it won't take long to get to high numbers. Counter to that, if you wait until cases are 5,000 per day it will take longer to reach higher cases and it will also allow more time for vaccinations before those cases reach a high level. Interesting Chope refused to say what an acceptable number of cases were to open up, he said that isn't the point and that people should be able to exercise their freedom and even referred to the public as "prisoners" so that might give an indication where a number of Tory backbenchers are at the moment. You also have Damien Green on Newsnight saying that this has to be the last lockdown for both economic and mental health reasons and in order for that to be the case we need come out in a cautious and pragmatic way due to the new variants. So it seems there are two very solid blocks of opinion but very little agreement between the blocks. What are peoples thoughts? SB

The argument is heating up on easing restrictions on 10:00 - Feb 5 by 26_Paz | I have to go down Romford high street to get groceries or I will starve. You can not leave 2 meters between everyone there. You can’t. There isn’t a road to cross or cars to hide behind. These are facts. |
You've picked out 1 road in the entire country and extrapolated that every road is like that. Where I live I have no problem avoiding people. The couple in question probably wouldn't walk down a road as busy as Romford high street. But the point was BL was two abreast with his friend. He could at least have gone single file and made an effort. I go in my local co-op where it really is impossible to always be 2 metres apart. That's not the point. You make the effort where you can. I bet you're one of these people who NEVER bothers with social distancing?

Had my Nan not have made it, of course I would have been very sad but she’s 86, she’s had a fantastic innings, I would accept a degree of risk to people that age in order to return society to normalcy. |
You'd sacrifice your nan for a pint. My word.

I'm done pal. I get verbally abused walking down a street and now i am getting sh1t off people who have literally zero knowledge of what transpired. Public shaming of someone over something they know nothing about it ffs. Someone should book mark some of these posts as a reflection on just how bizarrely some people reacted.

The argument is heating up on easing restrictions on 10:51 - Feb 5 with 1085 views | ElderGrizzly | A bit late to this thread, but anyway... We should follow the science, not the politicians lust for 'opening'. And as a point of correction, no-one is vaccinated until they have had both jabs. So we are looking at June for the Over 50's to have had both, or April/May for the 4 most vulnerable groups. To give you an idea of where discussions over the last few weeks have been going, is that we will see no international travel for leisure until September. And even then, you will be entirely reliant on that destination country wanting to accept you in. Of course we will see some easing, as in schools opening. But the idea we are all going back into pubs, restaurants etc in any kind of normal way before the summer is a fantasy.

I will be very surprised if some al fresco eating, drinking and small group socialising is not permitted by the end of May, given all over 50s will have had one jab and most over 70s will have had two... rogue variants not withstanding of course and assuming case numbers are consistently low

I am surprised there is no drive from within the government for getting overseas travel to be permitted for August school holidays. As you say, it's entirely reliant on the destination. SB

The argument is heating up on easing restrictions on 09:28 - Feb 5 by bluelagos | Not sure I explained it particularly well. But he was say 30 yards ahead of me waving in such a manner that I thought something was coming. I pass many people, every day without any such issues. I wouldnt for a minute look to encroach on anyone coming the other way. |
Fair enough. That does sound rather premature, given you had plenty of time and distance to get into single file and keep your distance. I don’t give people pelters until it has become patently obvious that they have no intention of giving me some safe distance when I pass. You’re right. It is a good example of how fragile some people’s mental health has become over the past year. We also need to accept that we have no idea of people’s personal circumstances. Actions that may appear bizarre to us ca n come from people who have spent a long period of this pandemic shielding. And are taking their first tentative steps back into the outside world. They may have lost a loved one to COVID and seen the suffering it causes. Or they may have just been vaccinated and are within the three week period it takes to kick in. Imagine being old and being in fear for a year then having some hope through vaccination. I’d be dead paranoid fir the first few weeks after doing all I can for a tear to about catching the damn thing.
