These days, you can be sent to prison just for saying you are English.

Exactly this. Patriotism is not thinking your country is the best; it's wanting your country to be the best, both in terms of what kind of place it is to live in, and how we treat other countries/peoples.

i think any notion of 'best' is pretty problematic to be honest. countries, communities, localities are all different across so many dimensions that 'best' is meaningless. recognising that we're good at some things and crap at others is a better place to be. enjoying the differences that there are, recognising the bits that are still crap, and actually, taking it all together, liking your country is probably the most we can aim for.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Happy St. George’s Day on 12:15 - Apr 23 by Barneycurley

'A feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired"

I think the second part sums up my take on it.

Its like saying I am a proud Ipswich supporter. Based on our history and culture as a club certainly not the current mob who represent our playing staff (largely)

You're proud of being aTown fan? Now that is really weird.

Seriously though, I get feeling pride about things I've achieved or the accomplishments of those close to me, but I don't see how your quote necessarily explains patriotism well.

So at the moment being patriotic about being English is a bit like wanting third division Ipswich to win the Champions League?

Blimey

Like many people I am in a whatsapp group with friends (it should be noted that the majority of my friends are left leaning) and one of my more militant comrades seems to be working himself up into a tiz as well.

Live and let live I say.

?
Obvs I don't actually know any of your friends, so I'm struggling to see what your point is here.

....you've got a few hooked on this.

Even ones that are pretending to be too cool to bite have bitten indirectly.

You've managed to get the obvious "he's not even English", "flag shagger" type of response.

Personally I think you should have waited to till later in the day so you could have hooked Sprucey, but overall it's a solid 6.5/10.

Personally I feel that the world would sometimes be a happier place if people took a less cynical view.

Being less cynical about fictional history is what led to the ACTUAL Nazis.

I'll think I'll keep calling out the stupidity of nationalism personally.

You appear to have missed the word "sometimes" in my post.

I was referencing an ambiguous post on a football forum, not the third reich.

I just think it's a slippery slope to start challenging the truth as cynicism, that's all.

I saw it. Too obvious and uninteresting to snag a moose! Didn't stop a few smaller critters from getting themselves all excited though. Personally, I feel as excited about St George's Day as I do about National Hardware Shop Day.

....who will bring this particular subject up purely to get a response and there are also people that are lurking in their bedrooms with the curtains closed waiting to give them the said response.

We can see that on this thread.

There's only a very limited number of people who are able to accept other peoples views, whilst still fundamentally disagreeing with them.

The world could indeed be a far happier place, but unfortunately a growing number of it's inhabitants won't let that happen.

To be fair if the best political argument someone can come up with is FISHING FOR BITES BANTZ they deserve all the pointing out of their stupidity that comes their way.

Why the downvote here? It's a historical fact that St George was a foreigner who ousted not only an English man but a Suffolk man from his job.

I have Very Real Concerns About This.

St Alban did not come from Suffolk.

Hang on a minute, are you sure St George was not a coal miner from the Tory heartlands of the North East?

Thank goodness the sixth form ministry of truth and justice, has made me see the reality behind the national day for the English.
