Most promising Town player who didn't make it... 13:47 - May 17 with 21195 viewsKropotkin123

Personally I remember Nabil Abidallah was a Dutch international at multiple youth levels and at the time I expected him to break into the team, but he didn't go on to have a decent career.

Who did you think was going to be the next big thing for us?

Most promising Town player who didn't make it... on 15:15 - May 17 by Sharkey

Pat Sharkey.

Bobby Robson did not sign many players, but Pat was going to be special...

He won one cap for Northern Ireland against Scotland at Hampden Park in the Home Internationals. Straight after the game he got the train back to Ipswich and in the early hours was spotted on the dancefloor of the First Floor Club, still wearing his Northern Ireland shirt.

Anyone said Dyer yet? Should have got 100 England caps and played for Man U or Liverpool.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Poll: With Evans taking 65% in Huddersfield, is the Banter Era over?

There was a lad called Peter Canavan in the youth team / reserves of the late 70s who everyone says would have made the first team, very good player by all accounts.

He died tragically in a car accident in late 1978.

Geddis' best mate, the tragedy hit Geddis hard causing him to ask to leave, Robson, though not wanting to lose him, allowed him to go.

That’s reminds me of a story about Boncho

I remember listening to 606 once and a guy called in saying that a player - wearing his full Luton kit - was waiting for a train. Someone else phoned in shortly after saying that it was Boncho -still had his shin pads on.

And he would have done if it wasn’t for injuries.

Still only 18, scored a couple in the EFL Trophy for their U23s last year, had an OK season for their PL2 side.

Not making England U19/U18 squads though, so presumably not currently regarded as the most outstanding prospect.

Didn't make it at ITFC, or made it somewhere else, just not his childhood club?

He still had a decent career, must have played 100 games for Town over four years, scored a few goals and had his moments.

Post left yesterday on the Bobby Robson Facebook page regarding Peter Canavan by WC Mc.

How the world has changed and how quickly time goes past.
7th of April 1975 I came to Ipswich Town for the first time on trials.
50 years ago today. My dad put me on the 08:20 train from my home village of Kirkconnel in South West Scotland. I got off at Carlisle .Changed trains got on the train for London Euston.
Off at Euston got the underground to Liverpool Street . Got train from Liverpool Street to Ipswich and the head scout Ron Gray got me off the train at Ipswich.
He took me to a little hotel not far from the ground called the Portman Hotel and introduced me to another 13 year old on his first trial.
A young man from Telford in Shropshire called Peter Canavan.
We both eventually signed for the club on the same day 17/ 7 / 1977 ironically it was my 16th birthday. Peter was tragically killed in a car crash and to this day I’m sure like me all his teammates still think of him and what might have been.
Peter was so good that Sir Bobby didn’t sign a player that for 47 years has been a great friend of mine.
A lot of you won’t know this but when Mich D’vray came on trial his best friend was also on trial. Sir Bobby signed Mich but didn’t sign the brilliant Richard Gough . Due to having The Beat and big Al in first team and Butch and Russell in Reserves and of course having Peter
What we would give for those players now.
I never made it at the club but did manage to play in SPL with Patrick Thistle. After my beloved Rangers it’s the first result I look for every week
Great memories of some wonderful wonderful people and players. And amazing times
Especially our firey Scottish contingent
George and Warky Alan Brazil and Peter Shields
Keith Millican Ian Phillips and Jim King and how we all looked out for one another
Sorry guys just thinking back a bloody half century ago and it feels like yesterday
The good times will come back I’m sure 💙🤍

This thread started with a hat trick against Watford - but when we beat them 4-1 in the ZDS back in the day, I could swear blind that David Gregory scored a hat trick, with Ian Redford getting the other.

But Wiki says he only scored twice for us?

I'm confused. (And horrified to see that he's now 55)

Wikipedia only includes league games and goals, so you're right.

He didn't, was playing at a local non-league level around Leeds last I remember. Was clearly very talented but think he may have carried a bit of weight and not sure he had the dedication required.

Re the latter, one of his academy teammates told me more recently that he was never going to make it as a player, just hadn't got the dedication, time-keeping etc.

So many good shouts on this thread. Two not mentioned: Town's eternal sub in the glory days, Robin Turner, who, either for the reserves or the youths, had he fallen over concussed in the are, the ball would have ricocheted off him into the net. Yet goalscoring eluded him when he put a first-team shirt on.

And from the sixties, via a similar transformation from ressies Greaves-like poacher to first team barn-door avoider, Frank Treacy.
