Most promising Town player who didn't make it... 13:47 - May 17 with 21201 views | Kropotkin123 | Personally I remember Nabil Abidallah was a Dutch international at multiple youth levels and at the time I expected him to break into the team, but he didn't go on to have a decent career. Who did you think was going to be the next big thing for us?

Just looked up a few of the Newcastle players from that game and Peter Ramage was assistant coach at Phoenix Rising. Played for them / Arizona United for a year or so from May 2016 and coached from August 2018. He's now back at Newcastle.

There’s an old saying that ‘youth is wasted on the young’ and maybe this is particularly true of ex-footballers who, when they are much older, they look back on their life and think ‘why didn’t I just knuckle down?
Most promising Town player who didn't make it... on 17:51 - May 17 with 2117 views | longtimefan | Elliott Hewitt was one that great things were expected of given the clubs chasing him when he signed for us. Unfortunately it never happened for him or us.

Most promising Town player who didn't make it... on 16:56 - May 17 by hype313 | I think what this shows is that you can be amazing at 16 and then average once you hit 18, so many 16yr olds I knew back in the day thought they would make it but struggled to push on when entering mens football. If we actually look at it in the past 20 years only Bramble, Dyer, Ambrose, Bent, Wickham, Rhodes have all gone onto better things, and then think how many hundreds if not thousands of young lads in that period that didn't push on. Just goes to show how hard it is to make it, that's my solace anyway... |
Playing age group football is very different to playing in the first team, typically only a few in each year group are able to make that transition. The difficulty is that at most clubs you have to step up very quickly else you will be let go. Clubs cannot afford to give you game time if you are not ready, and if you are not ready, you will not get the game time needed to develop. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

IIRC, the nickname also came about because Velice put Gerrard in his pocket in the Macedonia/England match when his name became known. I thought we found a future winner. But we found a guy who had already played his best game,.

Most promising Town player who didn't make it... on 18:26 - May 17 with 2051 views | Hipsterectomy | Connor Wickham. From the number of scouts who attended our games, and from what I remember a few big clubs touted him and his family with free tickets and things (Arsenal regularly from what I remember). Seemed he could have any club he wanted and be regarded as an important player for them. He was getting national praise for his England yoof performances...then chooses Sunderland and is shifted to Palace after a few loans. Just over 100 apps in the Prem considering his potential is disappointing. He’s only 28 but you have to feel that his Prem days are over

I hope not. Whatever his age his best years are behind him. 41 appearances for Palace in 5 years, 13 for Wednesday last season. Barring nostalgia, why would we want him?

I know some of his youth team contempories were perplexed why he got his chance in the first team so early as was far from a standout performer for them.

For a player who could strike a ball well, he scored remarkably few goals in his career - 21 in 439 games so about 2 per full season.
